Ive tried to fish the riverfront several times this year and only caught one small flathead and some perch. During the day there are tons of jetskis going right over your line, and at night it seems to be a hang out for people with motorcycles. Its usually so loud that you cant hear your bait clicker going off. A night during the week would probably be the best time to go.

That's terrible man. Hey Rodpod do you fish by Ceasers riverboat casino? I was going to go down there tonight and play in a Texas Hold'Em tournament, but I don't know if I'm going. You're right man, it's best to fish when it's quiet and peaceful. I don't like fishing in noisy places either. Good Luck!!

I dont think there is a ceasers casino around here, there is one casino boat called the aztar. But its right next to the river front, so you have the same problems if you can find a way to get down around there.

Rod is right.....it's not even really worth fishing there, plus there is traffic constantly driving just a couple feet from where you sit. I just don't think it's safe. it's just nice cuz it's flat and easy keep your chair level.

Can anyone shed some light on where the big ones are?
Flatheads, Blues, or Channel cats. I don't really care what they are I just want to catch a catfish.....Things have been going a little slow lately.

I think with all this rain we got last night and this morning should help put a good current into the river, you should start to see things pick up now.
most of the big fish I have been seeing on my graph is in 50 to 55 foot of water and not hitting hardley at all.

I fish up river of newbugh dam, near the Yankeetown area, both off the bank and in my boat, been catchin' more **** gar and perch than anything but have also caught several small blues, flats and channels, 2 to 10 lbs. I also agree that the monsoon we had today ought to change the game. Lots of driftwood on the creek at Yankeetown, water went up a lot, didn't try the river, to muddy tonight but there is always tommorow. Can't wait to catch the biggun's

I bet the fishing was good this weekend with the river on the rise. Looks like it on its way back down. But Katrina seems to be heading this way on wednesday to flood the Ohio River Valley. I imagine it will raise the river a few feet and get some water moving through here.

50 to 55 feet of water would be nice. The channel on the river we fish is only about 4-8ft deep right now. I hope the change in weather will change this soon. I'm ready for some deeper water.

Hell ya!! Anyone else catching them on Ohio!!!

I am in Madison, between louisville and cincy. the river went up after the rath of katrina. and was going down. I live 20 miles down river from a major dam(markland). I think they opened it(the dam gates) for fishermen this weekend. It was on the rise again and peaked maybe yesterday. The river stage is still higher than it has been in months, which seems to be helping with the current. I am going in the morning, on the hunt for a big blue.

I wish I would have fished more later of last week. NO blues  I am going to markland all week to catch hybrids. I will cat fish later.

Fished Friday, Saturday night and caught several Flats, a couple blues, and some channels the biggest was 17lbs., had a couple line breaks and several beers. Sunday and Monday the fishing died with the current but still caught a few at the warm water discharge at Warrick Power. Hope we get some rain to pick up the current and bring it up.
Can't wait for the weekend!!!!

You know you're doin good when you catch the 3 main catfish species in a weekend. Where is warrick power at? Is it accessible for bank fishing?

09-11-2005, 10:50 PM
Warrick Power is right there with Alcoa, you could bank fish by the dam in Newburgh, park there by the overlook right at the dam, you can see the rip rap bank, go down there and throw out as far as you can toward the dam. Or you can go down to the Yankeetown exit and fish the creek, or keep on the road and go over the bridge, out in to the valley the road forks, I usually take the right fork, there are several spots to fish all the way down to the mooring where they tie the barges at. I have caught lots of nice fish off of the bank as well as in my boat. good luck hope to see you down there some time.

I fished that area earlier this year in between the Newburgh Dam and French Lick Island Marina. I caught some decent size fish 1-10 pound range. I have heard that there have been some nice sized blues taken around Hurricane Creek on the Indiana side of the island. I havent been back to that area for a couple of months though, Got too hot and the gas got too high.

Went fishing in the Yankeetown area last night. I caught a flathead that broke my hand scale, it bottomed out at 50 lbs. and popped the needle right off. The flatty was over 4 ft. long and measured 23 inches from fin to fin(pictoral?) The biggest one I have ever caught. I took some pictures and hopefully they will come out so I can post them on here. Last Friday we caught several flats and Blues in the 5 # range and one 28# flatty. Caught them all on shad. All most time to go back and try again. Good luck to ya all. Turned them all loose so they can get bigger.

and the wind was blowing so hard that it was blowing us up river.
The current was going west and I was going east. The Pontoon boat was like

float by.

Yeah I am getting tired of all of this wind lately. Went out tonight and it was 20mph, gusting to 30. Felt like alot more. And it was in my face the whole time. Wind just gets me frustrated when its that strong. I was trying to tie knots and it kept blowin my line around and messing everything up. The waves are loud and the sound of the wind make it impossible to hear your clickers. I feel your pain brother.

I dont think you could take a trailer down there to the beach. MadKater and I went down there and made it about 15 feet onto the beach and got his truck stuck. If you have 4WD you shouldnt have any problems if its just a john boat.
I havent been past newburgh beach, so im not sure if there is a ramp down there or not.
And every weekend in the summer that place attract drunken 4-wheeler drivers. Its real loud and the times ive been there i wish i had a gun to shoot a hole in their gas can.

I always hear about big fish coming out of Garvin park, but ive never seen any. The lake is pretty small and not very deep. And theres always 100 people fishing it. Ive tried to fish it a few times and didnt catch any catfish.
There is access on the river front if you like to deal with all of the motorcycle traffic. So make sure you have a sturdy rod holder that will work on the concrete because you cant hear a clicker down there. Ive caught fish there almost everytime ive been, but i dont like the publicity...everytime you're catching one you got 20 people watching you. And all the kids running around is crazy, they will start touching all your fishing gear and ask a million questions and want to use your fishing poles.......lol

yes..hovey has channels, blues and flats. flats over 50# are caught all the time by limb liners and my biggest flat out of hovey was 48# on rod and reel. the hard part is finding them, that lake has so much cover and so many good "features" it is hard to locate em some times.

Ive never catfished hovey lake but it looks perfect for flatheads, lots of submerged trees. Ive caught tons of crappie there but havent been back since its been dammed up. Its an oxbow off of the ohio river, so im sure there are some monsters in there. I seen an article last year about asian carp being real bad. Had a picture of the DNR guy in a boat with several fish mid-air. Not sure what the regulations are for motors, might be electric only or 9hp or lower.

Brent and Kris,
Obviously I didn't make it home to E-ville this summer. I pretty much stayed here in I Philly. I was able to go fishing at least 5 nights a week. i spent the whole summer hunting for the monster flathead. I was able to get 3 fish over 25lbs including a tournamet winner.
As expected from my parents, I WILL be home for Christmas and was wondering what kind of fishing is good around there at this time. The eastcoat guys on the James catch huge blues in the winter. I ould meet up during Christmas break.
peace out!!!

Craig, yeah the bite has been pretty good down here the last few weeks. Ive never fished upstream of the jt meyers pool. Was thinkin about makin a trip to cannelton sometime when the fishing is good and worth the drive. Bank fishing around here is kinda whack, mainly because theres a big city around here and 90% of the bank is private property. Then if you do have a good spot its hit or miss whether you can fish where you want.
Tan,
I went to harrison high school, next time you're down here give me a pm and maybe we can try to catch some fish. I dont normally fish in december or january because its cold as (#$* and windy everyday. Where did you go to school?
