"This buck was a truck kill near Alma, WI. DNR said that high protein,
specifically corn was the cause of the abnormal feet. The deer is
currently sitting in the alma bait shop freezer. "

I have never seen anything like this, have any of ya'll?

he just need some toe nail clippers, thats all. no really that is a disease of some type or a lack of something in the deers system. i have seen a deer on a vidoe tape that had the same problem but cant remember what tape its on. i cannot remember what they said caused it either but it wasnt from food that the deer had ate. i think the tape was a realtree home videos series tape from a few years back.

I use to hunt in South Carolina and hung out at a deer cooler there. I saw a deer a guy brought in to put in the cooler that had that same problem with its feet. They wasn't as bad as the one in that photo though.

Thanks for sharing the photo!

This oddity is caused by too much protien in the animals diet. It is called foundering, it makes the hoofs grow faster than normal. once this happens to an animal, it can't be stopped. That deer must have been traveling through an area where farmers had planted high protien or high oil corn. I would be willing togo out on a limb here and say, that there is most likely alot more in that area just like him.

Way to get it out of the gene pool too. Never seen that before eother. Cool find Amy.

This is not a genetic problem at all, it has to do with the amount of corn they eat.
Goes to show you that, too much of a good thing IS bad for you, LOL!!!

I'd think deer like that would be easier to find for us and other predetors due to the added noise when it walks.I would think it would also slow em down a bit too.I wouldn't think they would live long once the hoofs got so long. That was a nice deer though.Maybe its not a coincedence it threw itself into traffic.

Kutter you need to start hanging out at one! Told the guys back home I saw deer every day! LOL

Kutter you also have a strange name. LOL

If you shoot any of the deer you see at the deer cooler please do it outside of the cooler! Hard to patch bullet holes in the cooler walls. LOL

That is very interesting thank you for sharing! Those feet would make a very funny looking track. It looks like it would be hard to walk and jump. I wonder if they are the reason why he got hit.
