I am probably starting this thread in the wrong location...but my question is where did all of the Iowans go? It seems like the state of Iowa site has just shut down and there is very little activity on it lately. I would post this question on that site but it seems like it isn't getting visited anymore. So if you are out there keep us updated on what is going on thanks.

Todd, it has been the same for me in the Kentucky section. Either noone is catching fish or they are not posting about them. There hasn't been many new posts in a while. Vern
I am still here, I was out Monday evening for awhile did not catch anything May go back out Tues.

wow, the kentucky site must be slow if you are roaming around in the Iowa one. Hopefully the fishing will pick up for all and the message boards will be full again. I know it has been really good for me up until the rivers came up and I haven't been able to get the boat out in awhile, but that will soon change.

I had a two week skunking, finally recovered wednesday catching seven cat on the Coralville res. Ran out of shad and the bite stopped about the same time. Coincidence? Not sure, was nice catching again. Set them free. primitive

Your right a lot of people are moving away from the rural area I live in. Lots of houses for sale and farm land, but there are lots of farm ponds to fish with big fish in them and you hardly ever have to find a spot to sit down. Nice big farm pond cats and big bass.

Heck I'm still here. Went fishing at green valley St.Lake north of Cresten Ia.last Monday and the wind and rain drove me off the lake. But I did manage to boat 2 channels on cut blugill,a #8 and a #5 pounder. A bad day fishing is better than any day at work.a little over a year left and 'll hang My Knives up for GOOD after 43 years thats a plenty for Me.

I grew up in Iowa but moved down to Kansas. I check in to the Iowa section from time to time just to keep up on the action up there.
I've noticed the same thing about not too many posters in Iowa.
Iowans are mostly farmers and small town folk that tend to keep to themselves (lame generalization).
Maybe the age of computers hasn't made it to most Iowan homes yet?

Vern, what's up with Stan (iowacatter)? Have you talked to him? He's been on my mind lately quite a bit, and I am becoming a bit concerned :sad2:.

Been awhile ago, but the last time I pm'd with Stan he said that he had a big project he would be working on this spring/summer that would be taking up quite a bit of his spare time. I'm guessing it's keeping him busy.

OK I finally found a site with IA catfishing. I live in the SE part and fish mainly in the Iowa, Cedar, Miss rivers and Coralville Lake. I had a good week in the Miss, catching 25 Tue and 29 today. Ready to go to Coral. Any info would be appreciated

3 good cats this week caught below spillway. From 20-47 pounds. I've been fishing on lake though and the fish are holding at about 15-25 feet deep till 10-11 pm. Seems like live bait is working the best. Good fishing to all!!

Well i'm here.
SE Iowa, Mt Pleasant.
Tried the skunk at Lowell yesterday.
Its so low I hit 3 rocks just trying to get downstream.
Gave up about 1/4 mile from the ramp.
A friend took his boat out below oakland.
He sat on the bottom of the steps to where he ties up at his cabin in order to get in his boat.Thats pretty low.
Anyway had only 3 bites and caught nothing.
If all goes well I'll try the Miss later today.
best of luck

Montrose,Iowa reporting in. Been catching quite a few in Pool 19 between Ft.Madison & Keokuk,Iowa. Do most of my fishing in the area around Montrose,Iowa. I haven't actually kept track of the number of fish I've caught so far this year, but I would say it would have to be in triple digits. I think about the least amount of fish I've caught in any trip was 8 that weighed a total of 56 lbs. Me and a good friend of mine caught those in a local tournament here on June 16th. For the most part though the fish have been running a little smaller this year than in past years. I actually haven't targeted big fish except in that tournament in June. That same friend and I caught 21 fish on March 26th,right after ice out that weighed a total of 125 lbs. When I say the number of fish I've caught this year is in triple digits,I should clarify that and say that is the number of fish that have been caught out of my boat by me and my fishing partners. I will say that probably 95% of the time I do fish by myself! Can't really complain, even a bad day on the river beats a good day staying around the house!

I love to go after cats at ice out. I have several spots that I go around Muscatine at ice out and do very well. Best time of the year for me.

I'm going to screw this thread up and post from the WESTERN side of the state. Most of you most likely think this area isn't part of Iowa and you wouldn't be far from wrong the way we are ignored by our legislators. We have the Big Sioux River, Missouri river and lots of oxbows to fish and no one hardly fishes them for fear of the dark, I guess. Any way, get your passports up to date, get your shots and take an out of state vacation to the other side of Iowa and if your the last to leave turn off the lights. lol

I told you by posting from the Western side of the state I would screw this thread up. Just like I figured the East side of Iowa has just kind of turned their heads, looked down at their feet and got real quiet. Most likely started walking slowly towards the exit to get away from here. I feel like that relative we all have that we don't want to be associated with but still have the last name that's the same. That's OK, I forgive you, we've been snubbed so many times on this side of the state from law makers and such that we are used to it. You talk to someone in the central part of Iowa and they almost always have to tell you they are from the East/Central part of Iowa. I'm developing a complex and for a simple person like me having a complex can be rather..., well complexing. I guess I'll just get the smoker out and make some homemade deer sausage to take my mind off my lonesome feelings.

Hey gilage, good to hear you had a good time on RAGBRAI and I agree the people in Iowa are friendly but if you think about it you road OUT of Western Iowa not TO Western Iowa on that bike ride. I heard of one politician that came up with a plan to turn the Interstate Highway across Iowa into a four lane highway East. Figured so few people were going to Western Iowa why waste the other two lanes. But, the people in Nebraska complained they wanted to get home and as bad as it is, the shortest way home was through Western Iowa so it never got off the ground.

So whadjya want to talk about?I ain't proud. I'll talk to a guy fron western Iowa.LOL.
This is a wet year for us eastern folks.
Grounds nearly saturated and rain just runs off. We've had several years of near drought conditions. Now the small rivers raise quickly and fall back just as fast.
Can't find the fish.
Gotta mow the yard every week:sad2:. Generally it will be nearly burnt up by now.Cuts into my fishin time.
I read where you fish oxbows. We don't have them here. The Miss is just a ditch that barges travel up and down.
There is a local backwater lake (3000 acres) ,closest we get to oxbows, that is run by the corps. Its drawn down every year to let the duck habitat grow. The attitude seems to be hurray for duck hunters and to hell with fishermen. My own opinion.
They had a local fishing tourney last week on the Miss.
86 boats 6 more than last year.
The guys fished for just under 7 hours.
The winning creel was 89 pounds. 2nd place 70something. 3rd 30 something.
I was told they cleaned almost 300 pounds of fish for the fish fry.
Same guy won as last year.
So whats happenin on your side of the state?
have a good one

Hey justwannano, man you've had bad weather and we have had just the opposite. Early in the spring rained all the time then it dried up and I mean it dried up big time. I mowed my hard twice in July and once was because we were going on vacation and I thought I had to mow for my ticket to go. We've had a lot more rain in Aug and I've already had to mow three times this month. It's amazing that when it hasn't rained for a long time everyone wants rain, comments we need rain and then when it rains for two days in a row everyone is tired of this weather and wants the sun to shine. Its the same with summer/winter weather, I work in a plant without air conditioning and most of our work is in tin buildings with fans as our only way to cool down. 7:30 in the morning people are complaining about the heat and my standard response is, "We waited all winter for this kind of weather" and the opposite when they complain it's too cold in the winter, "We waited all summer for this kind of weather". Kind of hushes 'em up for a bit because they know it's true and I haven't figured out a good response to myself.
Our fishing was excellent this spring and then when the weather dried up the fishing went South. We went out this Friday night to our favorite oxbow and stayed until 2:00am and had three fish in the cooler. I think we might be done for a while. But you know the interesting thing is I reached over the boat to wash my hands and the water was cool, not even warm, it was cool. Had the brother in law test the water and he was amazed also that the water wasn't hot. With the weather we've been having it should of been very warm. Need to figure that one out, I know there is current there as our bobbers worked back against the wind and waves so that tells me there is some current there. This oxbow is the place where the electrical plant dumps its cooling water, it goes through the oxbow and back into the Missouri River so the water should of been warm from cooling the generators and then with the sun also. I'll have to ask my thinker as I'm not allowed to think on my own.
Need to start getting the bow and muzzle loader out and sight them in and just get back into a grove shooting. Move a couple deer stands and spend some time with the ticks in the woods. We are fast approaching my favorite time of the year when you can do it all; hunt, fish, boat and be outside when it isn't miserable.
Hey, you have a good one and I hope it dries up for you and stays wet here for a while, time to get ready for Church.

Good deal! I have just as much fun, if not more, taking folks fishing and watching them catch fish as I have catching fish myself.
