thought i would restart the tread on the river (Colorado) for info and fishen reports , as some of ya know i do most all my fishen on the colorado river near blythe Ca., the area around blythe is what I know best, but theres more then 150 miles of river so there alot of the river I have never been on and hope there's some folks that know other spots that they can add what they know and there reports.

its been a good year down the for the flathead, Bluehunter, others and myself have hit the river and done good on the flats he's got 4 flats in the 30lb range and i got a 48lb and 30+ and some smaller , with 5 trips up the river in the pontoon we got 10 fish that added up to 320lbs

found this on the web http://www.usbr.gov/lc/region/g2000/assess/chapter3.htm this has great info on the history of the lower colorado river a lot to read but worth the reading

ya them little birds are a blast, vini i have herd that there's some good hunting up there, they were tons of birds on opening day and mostly white wings, if you never hunted dove, white wing are what you want, there kinda like getting a flathead the best eatting of the dove its more of a white meat and much better to eat, guess thats why i like the river good bird and good fish.

went back down there this last weekend (9/8 to 9/11)went out sunday nite for some hunting never got but one shot, and as far as fishing didnt go out, the water was so muddy after the big rain, i just didnt want to take a chance of putting the pontoon on a sand bar,i did go down to the beach sat nite but never got a bite after 3hrs

brian, bill or? if ya want to hookup the weekend after next let me know, i need to stay home this weekend (9/16)havnt been home in 5 weekends, going to be cooling down soon, was a little clilly this last weekend at 5am

Yeah I think they had some glitch's, no confirmation on that yet but there have been some strange things going on last week or so.

If you want to bump up a thread thats archived just find it in the archives and post to it that will put it back up here wherever it came from originally I just tried it and it works

Hey Tim, welcome home. Are you going to be around for awhile? If so we will have to hook up with riverbud (Dale) and do soom fishing. What I need to do is get to the river and see if I can fined were the flatheads are. Dale and I need to take are boats and start looking for any deep holes from Mayflower camp grounds to the dam. As I can recall from all the trips I made up and down that area the deeps water I have seen is about 10 to12 foot. Them Flats got to be Holded up in that deeper water, now just to find them. Look foward to fishing with you again. Later Bill

Howdy guys,

I'm a new guy on the board here, this is my first post matter of fact. I got a place I go to outside of Blythe as well, just a half mile south of Twin Palms at Wind Rivers. Just started fishing for cats out there, and I'm looking to improve on the two twelve pounders I caught last time. I know they get bigger than that! Any tips'd be appreciated, bait, hooks, etc. I'm also looking to buy a new rod and reel combo, so any suggestions on that would be nice also. The river is the only place I'll be fishing for cats, so it's pretty place specific. Thanks guys,

hey bert all doing good here good to here from u dude ' yep to bad about the silver and black, lol

welcome to the boc erick, not sure of were your talkimg about for sure, i'm thinking its about 20 mile north of the dam, if your going for the flats try finding some slower moveing water around some structure trees , drop offs, and thing to slow down the curent for them to hide out behind, i know there some of the bigger one up there , iv heard of some 40lbers being cought up there , but iv only fished that part of the river once, let me know some time ur down there and we' ll hook up down there at lest twice a month,

hey tim them dates will work for me,wasn't sure until today about it, let me know and ill head out with u, dont know about fishen all nite cuz its starting to get cold down there early in the morn, bill what ua think about headen out? mayb fish up river untill late afternoon and then move down by the trailer and fish a few hours after dark and head in , got a spot near the the traler i fish thats not to hard to get back from after dark been getting some nice channels there and can never tell about them flats i have got some smaller ones there in the past, azflats has been getting the big ones on some carps head and thinking some mackerel heads may work if we cant get some carp, if not mayb a big channel will hit on it, cut bait may be working better this time of the year

ya all take care and good fishing

Hey thanks for the warm welcomes all. It's nice to meet some folks who love this stuff as much as I recently found out I do.

Anybody know much about fishing down around the Palos Verde dam? Seems like it would be a prime catfishin area, but I haven't gotten around to getting down there with a pole. If you guys are fishing it, what are you catching them with?

And Riverbud55, yea, almost exactly 20 miles north of the dam. Never tried fishing during the day, but the night bite is always fantastic during the summer time. My dad's been fishing off our dock for twenty some odd years now, and the norm is in the 10lb. range. But it's fast moving water, and I'm thinking the bigger cats like a more stagnant area, like right out in front of the Palos Verdes dam. Am I on the right track?

Maybe the first week in December, and I am with you about nigth fishing, to cold for this old man. We need to start working on time for a gathering at the river for 2007, sometime in May or June would be good time.

11-06-2006, 10:31 PM
well blue think we will need some good luck cuz them cats just dont want to bite, think i 3 or 4 bites all weekend and 1 of those was on a good size mack head, hows about that blue, made a fast run but droped it just about the time i picked up the rod, set that 7000 bg hummen, thinking it had to be a good size flat, but other then that just a few bites on some dip bait, and never hooked a fish:embarassed: o well thats fishing.

sure wished i had my shotgun with me last nite just a the sun was settin a big flite of honkers went right over my head maybe 100' at 12 oclock high

bluehunter
11-07-2006, 12:44 AM
wow dale that could have well been a nice size flat. If anything attacks the mac head its more than likely something good when it had your reel screaming. Did you have a big hook on it? I am going to result to using 8/0 to 10/0 on my heads to keep things like that from happening. The last run I had at Irvine on a head the cat flattened the head and embedded the hook in the head so I had no hookset at all.

riverbud55
11-08-2006, 12:00 AM
ya brian, had i think it was 10/0 true turn on it maybe an 8/0 hooked threw the eyes, dont know what the bait looked like cuz i snaged it bringing it back to the boat, fished a diffrent spot then normel, may give the spot anouther chance some time, could be a good spot, its across the river from the spot u and keith were talking about just up river from the pump on the bend, found a spot in 10' of water with some trees and the river was running 3' low, and the river running slow, only problem is all the snags lost 3 rigs in 1 1/2 hrs, did all my fishing up river during the day

Been fishing the "river bend" (auga quinn) (spelling) area starting in the late 50's prior to the channelization. As of lately, I have fished from Willlow beach all the way down to Lake Martinez. I have spent many nights sleeping in my old boat as I have gone some 70 miles on the river north of martinez. Many nights at Topoc Marsh. One morning, back a few years ago, I got spooked by the shot shells going over head. I have been to Mayflower landing many times, but nothing this year as of yet. I understand that their is a new entrance to the launch and camp ground. I do fish many other places looking for cats. The Delta, to the south about as far south as you care to go in a boat. Nacimiento, and Isabella, get their fair share of time, as well as casitas. Like to fish places where I can stay on the water with my boat. Nice to have "fallen into" this web site and see there are more cat men out here in the west. Everyplace is several hours from home here in The south bay of Los Angles, other than launching at Redondo or Marina Del Rey which are Salt water.

lets see now, as you leave the ramp area there are the sand bars etc. I like to go as far as I can on the left in my old boat 16' Bayrunner, and fish through the log jams up about 3/4 of a mile. I had some major surgery on both knees in June so did not get there or to the cannals at 4th and sixth. I believe I have fished from the bank at one of your spots up from the camp ground "Well used". I dont mind the heat so much, but most of my "latley" fishing" at Mayflower has been winter time. Lack of water height at this time!!!! usually, if you and get directly across and up the river, over to the "rip/ rap" there are some semi deep holes as you go up to the dam. I have fished a small drainage cannel as it comes into the river. Patients is not one of my virtues. I usually anchor on the right, and fish the shore below the dam.. I have taken the RV and walked across the cannel to fish the out flow below the dam.... again... time of year and that is important. I like to take my Quad and fish the cannels for flats from one likely spot to another....

Might see you there after xgiving if you are there.... not sure as of now if I'll finish my week off there or martinez after 1 last shot at Lake Naciminto to start off my week.

yo bud,

Thanks for the direct connection to "river history" I believe I found something like this once before when I was looking for cannelization and other spots off the lower colorado. As you leave martinez lake area, and head up river near piccacho (sp) their are some nice deep holes in the hard rock cliff arera where some of the old mine sites were..... of course back in the early days their were the steam boats.... If you could find wood...... some of the early freight people cut all the wood in reach to prevent others from going further on.....

Hey Dale, How did you make out on the prop you bid on? I sure had a good time down there and am thinking about going back. When is the next time you are going down? I may just come down a join you, if you will have me. Went to Cabela's today and got a hat. Forget it was Black friday and that place was packed, took an hour just to walk in, get the hat, pay for it and walk out. Should have turned the truck around and went back home, but already drove the 1.6 miles to get there so I went in, no one ever said I was to smart. NEED MY A$$ KICKED, don't you think.

Hey Dale, The next time I come down I will bring my underwater camera, would like to check that area below the big sand bar were the water is about 10' to 13' deep. I thank the camera will work there because there is not much current when the water is low. Do you think it would be worth a look see. I also am about done with your cabnet door, I don't have a router bite that will match the trim on your cabnets doors and not crazy about spending $40.00 for one to match. Thanking that door being down by floor won't be that noticeable, what do you think?

well just about ready to head 4 home thought I would post pics of my 2 pheasant I got. I say a good job for the CA DFG on putting on a great hunt for a family outting, it wasnt realy a hunt but more of a shoot, dfg came in about an hour before the hunt and released the birds in a good size alfha feild and all you had to do was walk across the feild once and 2 birds in the bag and thats your limit, not much of a hunt for me but there were a lot of older people and kids and first time hunters thats more what this thing is for, but i still shot my first pheasant ever, so thats cool, kinda reminded me of all the people follow the trout stocking trucks up in bishiop,

got a pic of the birds and some pics of the river ya mite like

Brian C. mentioned that there may be a May-June gathering at Mayflower. Any Ideas about the time. Memorial day weekend is kind of full on the river with this and that.

Dale, good looking birds. So the next time I am down there are we going to have Pheasant under glass and a fine sparkling wine? Well if not I'll be happy with a Hot Dog and beer. Is the river still as low or lower than the last time I was there? If it's lower, would making getting around in boat a little tuffer. Got the cabnet door done, looks good, if I say so myself. Had to guess on the color so I went with a golden pecan. Looks good on Oak. Should match the cabnets fairly close (I hope.) If not I can change the color.

o ya ray, forgot ur ?, no i dont fish the canals on the az side , i think the only canals on the az side are on the indian reservation, anyways around blythe. also the water should be down untill the first part of Feb unless they get alot of rain and then it will be longer, but ya can still get a small boat around, I'm thinkn this boat will have a shallower draft by 3 or 4 inches:confused2:

Riverbud55;

I think that you are right on with the Indian land.... its theirs... Sounds like you have your work set out for you... If you need any help "thinking of how to" .... I have modified two alum boats.... not counting this new one. My 12' is maxed out.... kind of a deck boat now... "I know how that feels"
trolling mtr in front and back, and evenrude 15 on the transom... Its a launch anywhere boat with a tilt trailer. Check out the modifications on my "departed old buddy"...Valco, "Bayrunner" hence the name,...... Bayrunner ray

Hey Dale, Looks like nice boat, should make good river boat. Lets see here, your boat is 16 ft with 75 hp motor and mine is 14ft with 20hp motor looks like I will be leaving the dock 1 hr before you.( ha ha) That boat should fly up and down the river. When is the next time you will be heading down to the river? Going to get my boat out of storage lot today and do soom work on it. Would like to install a auto bilge pump, need new light switch and the boat needs good cleaning before next fishing season.
talk at you later

My friend and I have been going to Ehrenberg every year for more than 20 years on Sept 1, (Dove opener for you non hunters) and the reservation used to encourage hunters to come and buy res. permits because they needed the revenues.
That has all changed in recent years since the opening of the Blue Water Casino. the reservation no longer needs to raise operating funds from the hunters and fishermen that use the reservation and their attitude has changed completely. I'm not saying that the Reservation personal are not friendly or polite, they are it seems to me a naturaully gregarious people, but, it's obvious they do not need us any longer.
My friend and I have made the decision that we will no longer make the trip there to hunt and are currently attempting to locate a new area to hunt for dove when the season rolls around next year.

Did you get out for some more birds, and soak some bait? I spent the week end looking at your old posts.... Man, you are some great link to that ole Colorado River. Thanks for the link to google map... Showed it to my son, and he had just "discovered" as well. I spent some time looking.... "fishing" with googlemap, and the renderings show the sand bars quite well from Martinez all the way up to Parker.. Of course the bars move... but what detail... If you haven't heard, the numbers at the bottom of the page below the copyright stuff is all of the posts in BOC. I think that it is something new? anyway, 59 - 62 are the california listings.
Are plans getting closer for another Mayflower "Gathering"?

Jaime I am on for it for sure. I know Dale is for it as well. It will likely be in the month of May or early June. I guess we need to start making plans after the new year and get a list and put it on the calendar. Dale is the man when it comes to the river connections.

riverbud55
12-20-2006, 12:00 PM
for sure we will be having another one Jaime , were going to need to pick a date, im thinking May would be best and theres only 2 weekends that wiil work, the 1st and 3rd, the 2nd is mothers day and the 4th is Memorial Day, after Memorial Day it stays real busy down there and it may be hard to get spots at the camp ground, the 1st weekend in in june may be ok seeing most will have made the trip the week before.

here the average temps for the 1st of may
5/1 sunrise and sunset 5:50 AM 7:22 PM average high and low 91°F-- 58°F record high and low 108°F (1947) 43°F (1967)

here the average temps for the 1st of june
6/1 sunrise and sunset 5:29 AM 7:44 PM average high and low 101°F 66°F record high and low 115°F (2001) 51°F (1971)

You bud,

count me in, on the beginning of may... I've been to the river on Memorial day many times..... and that was before jet skis and all. Rather not be there.. I don't mind driving. I leave very late or early and avoid the big rush out of town... Let me know what I can do to assist with things... I know that the "live bait" is the ticket...Maybe I can "hit up" the local crabers and get a whole bunch of macks to bring down.
Ps. I could do the 1st june... hard to get out of school then, but could do it. Its up to the boys and what they can do...."I'll be there"

Well never postsd that I got :embarassed:SKUNKED:embarassed: that nite not even a bite , got up river about 6:30 and fished until about 4am when my anchor let loose and sent me down river and nearly sinking my boat:oh: after a rear anchor with a short rope hooked up putting the stern aginst the current and pulling the back of the boat under water as I got near the rear of the boat. I was so very lucky that i wasn't sleeping when it happend, just got wakend by my clicker going off by them stuiped weeds:crazy:and was messn with the lines and recasting 1st of my rods out with a new gill on it and i think thats when it broke loose, then after rebaiting the 2nd rod I looked up and noticed tulleys were gone and no cable anywere in site, lucky also i had my headlight on cuz it was very dark outside at 4am that morning and was able to see the problem right away, one other very lucky thing is when I hooked up that rear anchor to the rear clet i didnt tie it off, I had just louped it around just 1 time and had it tied off up front after useing it up front earlier and was able to cut it loose from the front of the boat and the rope pulled threw the clet with no problems. dont know what i would have been able to do if it would have been tied off cuz after about 1/2 way to the back water was coming in, the more I think about it the more I know how lucky I was cuz i was the only one anywere near the river for the next six miles down river

anyways going down there this weekend , going to meet up with a group of at lest 5 dudes and 4 boats from the boc dang almost a minnie gathering ,if anyone else can make it come on out, the more the marrier

good fishing to all and cya

ps congrats to my home town Anaheim DUCKS:feel_good::feel_good:

Dale, sounds like you had someone looking after you that night. now maybe people will realize why you never anchor a boat from the stern. i've seen boats sank that way.
glad to hear things came out okay for you.
i ran into plummertom at lake mittry by yuma a couple of night ago. he had his friend Joe from riverside down with him. was able to spend a few hrs with him in morning. took them down some mackeral, and gave them some hogs wild stink bait and the hooks for it. don't know how they did last night though. said he'd post soon as he could get home and back online.

Howdy y'all. I'm headin' out to my place this weekend at Wind Rivers, just south of Twin Palms, just north of the Palos Verdes dam, and I was planning on fishing just south of that dam. Been using cut makerel and chicken livers with pretty good success north of the dam at our place, but I'm wondering if y'all have any suggestions for catching the bigger fish just beneath it.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

hi there,

I have had luck with dip bait on smaller fish. I use gold fish or blue gill for the flats, as of yet have not gotten a large one. riverbud can give you some clues to that area. hope to see you down that way. I will be there sat around 3pm or so going to fish just south of the dam. will be in a really ugly black jon boat.
