USING YOUR CAST NET TO COLLECT FRESH CATFISH BAIT

As you all know, the waters around the places that shad and, other baitfish hang out in is sometimes, shall we say,”Not Real Clean”. Putting a cast net in your mouth to catch bait is not really a good idea in these places. This method of throwing a cast net should help remedy this problem. I have taught 5yr olds how to use this method in 5 minutes.

Step 1.

Make sure you have the rope looped around your right wrist with a slip knot.
(If you are left handed use you left wrist)

Step 2.

Loop the rope onto your right hand with 9 even loops.
(Should be about a foot deep from bottom to top)
(If you are left handed use your left hand)

Step 3.

Grasping the rope with just your ring and little finger, grab the net loosely with your forefinger and middle finger and, slide your hand down the net until you have about 3ft hanging below your hand.

Step 4.

Lay the top part of the net over the back of your right hand. (or left hand if you are left handed)

Step 5.

Now extend your fore and middle finger and reach down with your left hand (or right if you are left handed) and pick up the weighted line and drape it over those two fingers and close them.

Step 6.

Now extend your ring and little finger and reach down again and pick up the weighted line again just past the point where in levels out from the turn and drape it over those two fingers and close them.

Step 7.

Reach down one more time and grab the weighted line just after the line flattens at the curve with your left hand (or right if you are left handed). Hold this part in your left hand until it is time to throw the net

Step 8.

Now to throw the net you need to stand facing at a 3 o’clock position to your target area.

(the target being at 12 o’clock or at the end of your shoulder)

Step 9.

Now twist your body clockwise to about the 6 o’clock position and come around in a counter clockwise (or opposite for left handed folks) motion and release the net from your right hand letting the net pop out of you fingers in your left hand. This will make the net open up better if the net is let out of you left hand last.
