Fishing was REAL slow on Saturday. The JMH emergency room wasnt. Be carefull on the rock walls guys. I had a spectacular wipe out that landed me enough thread in my shin to spool a reel with. I've thought about picking up some shin guards. :crying: I suspect the bite will pick up once the water level stabilizes. Seems the big fish go a little stagnant when the water levels are moving. I'll be out there next week. I caught the 60 pounder in my profile pic last week. Of course, hes still swimming out there somewhere. Maybe hell gain 30 or 40 pounds in the next few years and I'll get him again. Good Luck to all.

Looks as if the Missouri and local rivers will crest tomorrow (Friday) from the KC area to around Booneville and start a slow desend. Were supposed to top out Saturday/Sunday here in St. Charles about three feet higher than it was last weekend.

The river is about what it was like before the rain. Although its still lower then average. It's raining right now north of KC so it just might go up a little. I don't think it will go up all that much but I heard rain this weekend.

the river was up another foot -foot and a half as of yesterday, and there is a lot of debris in the water, logs and crap.

Went out Sat. caught some shad and drift-fished. No go...Rivers moving just way to fast. My trolling motor just didn't keep the boat slow enough and I ran the motor for a while but was going through way too much gas. I'll have to give it some thought. Did catch a few nice Shad with the throw net and had some nice bites from the dikes.

Bill, were you able to locate any of those bigger shad you like to use?

cross_their_eyes
08-22-2005, 02:38 PM
Dave, caught a few shad but small...2-3 inchers w/ an occational 3-4 incher. I REALLY want to know how to catch the big ones. 1/4 pounders! heck, I'd settle for a few 7 or 8 inchers!

Bill, I fished with a guide at Truman Lake. He told me it was critical to let your cast net go to the bottom. Of course you have to know the area to avoid snags. His bait tank was full of 6-8" shad. He goes out early in the morning and late in the evening when the water is calm below Truman Dam. Maybe this will help!

Thanks everyone! catmankev, I don't usually let it go to the bottom in the fast current of the Missouri but I'll try it behind the dykes in the slack waters.
Thanks!

I'm still in. My dad will just meet me at the ramp on Friday night. I took the day off and he took half a day, so hopefully we will be on the water by 8pm. I'll give you a shout when I leave KC. Anything you can think of we need to bring besides fishin'/campin' gear and food?

Big MO is gonna stay up for several days and the temp supposed to be pretty nice. Fish'n should be good. Gonna throw some shad around the dykes this week. See if I can't hit one on the head and wake him up! :conc-big:

Where is the best places on th Missouri River to use a throw net for shad??
I have been driving to Smithville Lake to catch mine.

Feeder creeks, and rivers. You can also catch them up along the dikes. I like throwing behind the L dikes.

roughneckcatman,

Crazy is right on target. I've been catching quite a few behind the dykes in calmer water. They have been pretty small but I get quite A few. I'm gonna try a little deeper and let the net go down a little deeper too for some bigger shad.

Good luck!

My shad catches have gone higher with the 8 foot net I got too. The more net in the water the more water you cover. Although in the swift current it's like a parachute.

Josh, I wanna see that 8 footer. I'm surprised there's any shad left in Smithville lol.

Bill, I've never thrown for them in the river, but I know on the lake I get most of the bigger ones (6-8 inchers) when I let the net sink all the way. I have a 20 foot rope on mine and if I get deeper than my rope, even if I've seen a bunch on top, I don't do as well if the net doesn't hit the bottom.

all the way to the bottom works for me as well, but watch out for them there rocks ,i go though about 4 nets a year, roffermike glad to see your going to make it next weekend, when you put in at the ramp head down the lamione until you get to the mouth and we are on the right you will see stairs someone cut out of the bank

Crazy,
That guides name is Steve Brown. He really seemed to know his stuff !!! We stayed at his place for 3 days. He took us out twice. Caught 19 blues each time out, including the 44 lb'er in my profile pic. I would recommend him to anyone.

I hope the river drops another foot or so here in Atchison. The only wing dam I can find access to from the bank is notched and the river needs to drop more for me to get out on. Also I think if the river drops more the fish wll have less water to avoid me in! lol

kcgeoff, I'm smell'n what you're step' in man...
Those wing dyke are fill'n up pretty fast here too. I think the waters supposed to stop rising very soon so we can get back out to those dykes!
Good luck!
