What technique are you guys using out there mainly? I gave up on Mendota a year or two ago. Nothing but tiny >2lbs the last 3 or 4 trips I went. I use anchovies and liver from the shore. I never went too far back, maybe a boat is the trick? I used to catch a few large fish over off Bass ave but enjoyed the area better back at the refuge. I know there are tons of guys out there, what am I missing?

daystarchis
08-17-2005, 10:40 AM
Hey Bro... Just sent you a PM. Dude... I have a boat and I do better from shore. lol!!!! It is the spot you fishing and bait as well. I use a sliding sinker with a 12-18 inch leader with chicken liver or a dip bait worm with Sonny's or Rusty's dip bait. If I am out of the dip, I am forced to use the stand by (Hog wild).
Yep, we catch those 2# too, but we often get the larger ones over 4# up to double digit (like last friday). Be more than happy to turn you on to some of our spots.

My dad duck hunts up there. Last year he told me he tripped over a catfish while wading that was easily over 50lbs, is this true ? Are there some fatties in there ? My dad is a big guy, 6 foot 7 and fishes, so he knows his stuff. That is really erie if you ask me.

centralcalcat
08-20-2005, 10:14 AM
Muskyman,
I have fished there a few years now regularly. According to fish and game there are a lot of 20# plus pound cats in the water. So could it be true possibly. Another possiblility wpuld be a carp, tons of those monsters in Mendota, big ones too.

mendota fishing report for Wednesday was 2 stripers, 3 cats, and 1 huge bluegill. Smaller stripers harassed the liver lines throughout the day and night and the cats were on a slow steady bite on Sonny's. No huge cats to speak of on the night all 1-4lber's. The stripers, 1=18" and 1=17". Bluegill was one of my biggest approx 11/2lbs-2lbs. Fairly decent day overall.

Headed out again tonight

Went out last night again with Robb and Vince. 8 cats all smaller. The bridge is now opened and i allowing for access to the back areas.

Just for a reminder for everyone. In two weeks the gates close to the wildlife refuge for hunting season adn we won't be able to fish those waters again until Feb/MAr time frame.

Went out last night again, 8 cats before I left about 10:45pm. Robb and Vince stuck around for awhile afterwards and I am sure that they got more. Cooling temps are meaning moving fish.

The gate has been opened for a week to let you accross the bridge, that means the season in the refuge is coming to an end. By the end of next week access to the refuge will be blocked for hunting season and will not reopen until feb-MAR.

Delta Mendota Canal and Slough
Stripers ***
Crappie **
Catfish ***
A good bite on big catfish in the 10-pound range and some stripers in the 4- to 6-pound class is providing action in the Delta Mendota canal with cutbait, Larry Bristow said. Several anglers walked in to the "Y" area of the canal that is closed to cars and picked up 10 fish of 10 pounds or more on chicken livers. The Aqueduct near Pioneer Road kicked out a 26-pound and an 8-pound striper for one unidentified angler. There has been steady action for small stripers in the 5- to 7-pound range, as well as some catfish.

Went out to Mendota Reserve this morning. Drove across the bridge to explore a bit. Caught and released a 6½# channel and another small one.
Saw this blonde gal out for a walk. She sees another blonde lady on the opposite bank "Hey" she shouts, "How can I get to the other side?" The second blonde looks up the slough, then down the slough, then shouts back, "You ARE on the other side."

daystarchis
09-14-2005, 10:48 PM
Cool Steve! Where at on the other side did you catch the cats? I think this is the last week the gate will be open. In another week or so, that whole part will be closed off to duck hunters.

Over the bridge, turn left, after a ways the road leaves the side of the slough & goes out thru the fields, take the first left that is not posted with a 'no vehicles' sign back towards the slough, left at the ditch. I fished where the ditch connects to the slough. Irrigation people turned on a pump there just as I was leaving, so maybe the water level will be dropping.

Check this out..... Report from the Delta Mendota:

Delta Mendota Canal and Slough
Stripers ***
Crappie **
Catfish ***

A big 32-pound, 43-inch striper was taken on a Rattletrap in the Delta Mendota canal near Newman by Anthony Aseltine, Bristow said. Several big stripers have been taken recently, possibly signaling a big fish bite. The aqueduct also is kicking out lots of 5- to 6-pound fish, but a couple of big 18- to 30-pound stripers have been caught by unidentified anglers. There has been steady action for small catfish.

Fishing report form James RD (Mendota area)

Robb and I fished last night from about 6:30-11:30pm. No moon out, and no fish either. WHen we first arrived I caught 3 small cats right off the bat and seemed to be getting some decent hits on Sonny's. Robb was also picking up hits on chicken liver. This died out quickly. By the time dark hit the only thing biting were biting very litely ( mostly just stealing bait without a ring of the bell) and the only fish caught indicated their size. It was a personal best for me, my smallest catfish, ever. My stink bait tube was bigger then he was, I am still not sure how he got it in his mouth.

Talked to some people going out in a different canal and they had the same luck as us, but as I always say my worst day fishing beats my best day at work.

The Delta Mendota canal is producing lots of nice stripers, with one 33-pound lineside taken by an unidentified angler in the canal near Highway 152, Larry Bristow said. Lots of small cats are on a good bite in the entire canal on cutbait. The Delta Mendota water flow will be shut down in a few weeks.

The canal is producing stripers in the 7- to 8-pound range for anglers working the gates with lures or minnows, Larry Bristow said. One 20-pound fish came out of the Volta Bypass area of the canal on a minnow. The bypass area water flow has been stopped into the refuge. Lots of small cats are on a good bite in the canal on cutbait. The Delta Mendota water flow will be shut down in a few weeks.

Hey Bert,
Give me a buzz anytime, if I don't answer I'm probably with a customer, but I'll get back to ya. It looks like you can do some pretty cool stuff on this new site, I'll have to mess around with it. Hey Robb, there is a chance I might be headed down to Bakersfield to vistit my mom and sister around the 11th of December. If I do, I would like to stop in on my way back and drop a line in the water......or at least just stop and say hi. I'll let you know for sure what days if I do decide to go down. I should still have your phone number, but If you want to shoot me an E-mail just to be sure, that would be cool. I'll try to chat some more later today. take it easy fellas....
