First off a special thank you to Mike Miller for taking me out on his boat to fish the Ohio river. Went out last night and caught my best flathead of the year a 36 pound monster.Caught the fish on a dead sucker that was on hook for 2 and a half hours. We had a very good night landing about nine flatheads between 5 and ten pounds and a 8 pound channel.Let me add a thank you to the BOC also for without I would never have been able to meet Mike to fish with. Here is some pics.

Walt,

that whole area rodchester, bridgewater, monaca, freedom. It extremely good for flatheads.

I think the name of the pool is dashields but I could be wrong and yes it's where the beaver comes in. The beaver is a very small river and up by the first dam in becomes very shallow and dangerous. My grandfather tour up a prop up there.

The dashields pool is pretty big and produces some nice looking Flatheads. Eric said that there was a 47lber taken out of the beaver but it was for a tourtament down in WV and he didn't know it was the record and released it.

Josh

PS if you have google earth use it to check it out. Go over the pittsburgh area and search for dashields pool

I went out the other night and as everyone else, didn't even come close to catching fish like I was the past 2 months. I noticed the shad have started to run. Maybe that has something to do with it. I also think the low water levels are hurting things as well.

I too fish the Ohio River very near the PA line. Just wanted to try to help a bit with the two links below that give the water temps & levels for those that may not have them saved.

Went out for 2 hours last night. I used creek chubs instead of blue gill for the first time. (special thanx to Mike Miller for the help in catching them) Caught 1 15#, 1 12# and had a ton of runs. Next time I'm going to use a two hook rig on them to hopefully hook-up better with such large bait. It seems the slow spell might be over.

Went down to the New Brighton fish park on the Beaver River on Friday and caught alot of catfish 4 flattys and 7 channels. The biggest flatty weighed 20# on the button according to my analog scale. The channel cats were really agressive. I had huge bluegill for bait and they were attacking. Not sure how some of them even got the gills down their throat.

Took my father-in-law out Saturday evening, and we were busy all night long. We brought around 10 fish in the boat and had plenty of runs and misses in between. We were using 7-12 inch trout for bait, and the flattys love em. I got pics of the two big ones. Soory for the poor quality:angry:. I found out we are not good photographers in the dark with a camera with dying batteries.

Brother Cataholics,
I have been lurking here for some time. Started Catfishing for shovelheads in the eastern part of Pa, specifically the Schuylkill River, but moved to central PA about a year ago. Decided I would hit the big rivers out west and see what it's all about.

Last night was the best night to date. From about 9:00pm to 1:00 am had continual action, boated 17 flatheads and one 7 1/2 pound channel cat. All were caught on sunfish and rockbass, live.

Set my personal best record, a 38 pound 42 1/2 inch long, 26 inch girth, monster flattie. That was my biggest one ever. The previous best was 14 pounds. The fish took a rock bass, in about 15 feet of water, was fishing the Neville Island area, near the dam. I use circle hooks exclusivly and once the hook was set, I thought I was snagged. The brute put up a heck of a fight. The fish was caught around 1000 pm.

While the I was tending to the big one, my other bait alarm went off, I couldn't get to my rod, so my fishing buddy took the rod, he pulled in a 21 pounder. That was the original goal for the summer, shortly after that he caught a 15 1/2 pound flattie. It was fast and furious all night long, the only reason we came home was we ran out of bait. Great night all around.

The water in the Ohio is fairly low. Temperature at the surface was 73 degrees. You guys who live close should tear it up! I wish it wasn't a 3 hour drive away, otherwise I would be back at it again tonight. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Good Day All - My name is Mark and I live in Upstate SC. Am coming up to your neck of the woods on 6-25-07 to work an engineering project in Mt. Pleasant. May I ask my fellow BOC'ers out there what bodies of water (lakes, rivers) are close (30-40 min. drive) to me? I've been a Basser for about 12 yrs., but am not new to catfishing.

Personal best is a 20# Blue (by accident:tounge_out:)from Lake Keowee caught on a drop-shot rig using a small minnow on 6# test (was fishing for Crappie) in 30' of water. Took a little over 3 hrs. to get her to the surface. Have caught quite a few channels and a few small flattys, but that's about it.

It'll probably be a couple weeks until I can get my job under my belt, but would really like some basic direction to go:wink:. I don't mind sitting on the bank, but would also be glad to share expenses with anyone kind enough to invite me out on a boat or even fishing from the bank.

I saw a post that mentioned the PA Angler & Boater Mag. How might I pick up a copy or subscription?

Looks like there is a pretty close-knit bunch of Catters in the area and am impressed with the numbers of fish you folks are finding.

I really appreciate any help or direction. I catch & release, but like to keep a few smaller channels for a few meals. Many thanks for your time and consideration....Hope to be able to meet a couple of you catchasers. By the way, I'm leaving my 17' Bass Tracker @ home, but have a truck w/ hitch if I could help pull a boat or something:smile2:.

Good Luck to all and thanks for your kindness.:cool2:

Mark - Welcome to the B.O.C! I hope you enjoy your visit to Pa.!:smile2:Since you will be in Mt. Pleasant and want to find a spot within 30 - 40 mins I would say the Mon. River would be your best bet. Try the areas below any of the Lock & Dams and you should find Cats. We have Flatheads, Channels & Bullheads available in W.Pa.. I am a good ways away from where you will be or I would offer to take you out. The Pa. Angler is sold at newstands or go to the fish commissions website to subscribe www.fish.state.pa.us Good luck and let us know how you do!

I fished the Ohio River in Allegheny County this morning and did pretty well. Got two Flatheads around 23-24", two Channels around 17", bluegills, lots of fingerling Smallmouths and one Skipjack Herring. With four or five rods I could have caught more bait, more Channels, and possibly more Flatheads. Limiting myself to two didn't allow good bait coverage.
