Did anyone get caught on Copan Lake Saturday night? I was on my way to Washington Cove and literally got blown off HWY 75 north of Dewey. I had the windows down and the radio announcer said there were 70+ mph winds. Filled my cab with sand! Hope no one was caught on the water.

We were camping in Wahington cove when it hit, ranger came by and gave us early warning. Got the tent down and the boat off the lake before it hit, got to give the park a bunch of credit for warning us. We got the tent back up around 10:15 and had a quite night.

Thanks for bringing the rain with ya Charlie. It was getting pretty dry around hear. Sorry your trip was hampered by the weather. At least you brought some dinner's home with you.

Chris, actually I cooked some of that fish for dinner.........it was very, very good. While I thought the jugging was a blast, the trotliner in me sure saw a ton of spots back there in the forest. Hell, I guess I can do them both down there.

There's a few choices for trotlines. Now if I was only brave enough to drive into the forest. :D

Charlie,
I was on my way to Copan Saturday night and was gonna look you up in the campground. In the future, If you see a Tracker Deep V with Brotherhood of Catfishermen on the console that'll be me. I look forward to meeting you sometime.
Our Park Personnel are very dedicated, and they have always let us know when a storm is on the horizon. I'm glad you were able to get things squared away before that wind blew in.
And congrats on a fish dinner.

Hey Galen,
How did you end up doing last night on Copan? I think I saw a sixty pounder out there last time with your name on it. You need to go claim your property. :D . I notice that some parts of southern kansas above copan and hulah got up to 12 inches of rain today. I'll be interested it watching how much of it makes it into our lake.

That sounds good. Those little Blues are good eatin'.

Chris,
The fish were shallow until about midnight, then they were deep and became finicky. The storm front was off to the north and I began to see lightning around midnight, then the north winds blew in, so it caused them to lose interest in feeding.
I don't know if the rains caused the lake to rise. When I looked on the website for the lake condition it didn't show any change for three days...must have been down for this period of time.

I guess the rain up in Kansas wasn't close to any of the creeks or caney river. I had just notice that on the news they were showing flood warnings for the counties in Kansas that are above Copan and Hulah and that some parts of Southern Kansas had recieved anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of rain. I looked on the Corps Website also and notice no increase in flow. Whether it be a lake or river the current always seems to turn the fish on.

Chris,
I called a friend in Sedan, Kansas and he told me they didn't get much rain. I had heard some stories, but the rains weren't in the Sedan area. Yes, inflow gets the cats bellies to growlin'. When it gets cooler and the fall rains come it'll get good at Copan.

Hello, Stormspotter: I fish the Lake in a boat through-out the Osage Plains area, Washington Cove, the Dam area towards the swimming cove, mid-lake in inundated lakes & ponds and the flats next to the river channel. The forest area can be good at times, also.

Good to have you here Henry. I believe you made a couple posts on the old site about Hulah Lake. Anyway most all of the lake is good catfishing if your in a boat. If your stuck on shore over at copan point where the day use picnic tables are I've done OK at. They do lock the gate's I believe at 10:00 but I've stayed there much later before. There's a older gentleman that comes to lock the gates up but has been nice enough to let me stay. He will just close the gates up and put the chain around to make it look like it's locked up. Then when you leave just lock up. Also try there at Washington Cove and walk down on the Rip Rap and do you'll do OK. I leave jugs back in there from time to time and caught lots of eaters. You might also try driving up highway 75 to the cotton creek bridge. People always park their cars in the medium and walk down the path to the creek and can do very well.

Well I was out on Copan Friday night and good part of Saturday. Great weather, shad were easy to catch, but a pretty poor night and day on Copan. I threw out 58 jugs with my son and friend. We ended up with only 18 fish which is not bad but with that many jugs out and fishing with rod and reel most of the time the ratio was pretty poor. Lots of dinks were caught half were under a pound and eight maybe were at the three pound range. The water is cooling down nicely, 74 degree water temp today. I think I'll blame that full moon for crappy results.

Chris, We were at Skiatook all weekend and had the same kind of luck Friday after dark, Saturday, and Sunday morning.
Friday before dark, my brother in law caught 10 lbs of fillets of sand bass. From then on we didn't catch anything but blue gill. The kids DID have a ball catching blue gill on bacon though.

Tony,
Did you catch any hybrids or just all sandies. Skiatook is known for being one of the state's best hybrid lake. Those guys sure do fight hard....lots of fun. Hey also wondering if you made it down to Newt the other weekend. I haven't been in a while but I'll be down there for three days at the first of month doing some bowhunting and jugging.

1 small mouth, 2 hybrids, and the rest were sandies.
All Friday afternoon by my brother in law.
No, we didn't make it to Newt last weekend. When/if I get my new boat up and running, my wife and I are gonna try and hit it. Hopefully it wont take too much more to get it going.

Well the weather was just too dang nice this weekend. The boy was out of school on Friday so we headed out to Copan. We got a late start but the shad were real easy pickin's and we threw out 32 jugs. The middle of the afternoon isn't the best time but took nine off our jugs after two hours and caught seven keeper crappie while our jugs were drifting. We baited our jugs again and set them out about 3:00 in the afternoon. We ended up with another 15 Saturday morning when we picked them up. I'm sure we would have done better if we had waited to bait our jugs at dusk instead of the middle of the afternoon when the turtles are out in full force. Anyone else been to Copan lately?

Well I was just wondering if anyone has been out to Copan lately? I was out there the last three days deer hunting. I really wanted to throw some jugs out while were were hunting but didn't have the time. While I was walking on one of the islands on Friday I saw a dead deer laying on the bank. I walked a little closer and realized it wasn't a dead deer it was a dead blue cat. I have no idea what killed it maybe just old age but it went over 65 easy and that's with missing it's entire stomach where a turtle or something was chewing on it. I wish I had my camera to take a dang picture just the head alone was close to two feet wide. I believe live weight it would have gone 75 to 80 pounds. There has been several big blues taken out of here this year. There was a 85 pounder taken back in March and three I know of in the low sitxy pound range. This has always been known as a great flathead lake with lots of smaller blues but there are some definate bigger blues being caught in there now. :)

Well it was a balmy 20 degrees this morning when I got up to Copan today. I pulled into washington cove with boat in tow and almost the whole cove was frozen over. I went ahead an backed the boat in but the ice was almost 3 inches thick. I guess the 8 to 10 pound rocks sitting on top should have given me a clue that the ice was too thick to break with the boat. Anyway I thought I would check out copan point and it was clear as bell. This cove gets more wind than washington so I headed out. Shad were pretty darn easy to catch today. I threw about a half dozen times with no luck. Seventh throw I got into a tight school of shad and fill a 3 gallon bucket half full with one cast. Surface water temps at 8:00 this moring were 33.9 degrees. I drifted with three rods for about an hour and caught one bluecat around 2 pounds. I went ahead and tossed out 20 jugs across some deep flats about 30 feet deep next to a creek channel. It warmed up pretty decent but tomorrow scould be real nice. Jugs were left out and we will see what morning brings.

Too bad I have too much going on Christmas day to get any fishin in.

I hoped for a little better results but we still put seven fish in the boat. My son went with me and he did lose one fish that would probably have gone 12 to 15 pounds trying to pull it into the boat. The biggest that we boated was 10 pounds even. There were a couple of slimed and twisted lines that fish did get off sometime during the night. The surface water temp was reading 34 degrees today. Washington cove is still iced in pretty good. Searched everywhere for the one lost jug...probably has a big old fish on. Here's a couple pics from the day.

Have you ever fished on Hula? I have been around it a couple of times-there was a creek coming in on the back side (north I think)-go over the dam and make a left and follow the road to some coves- is the fishing any good where
that creek comes in? It looked like it would be a good spot.
catfishcentral
12-23-2005, 11:19 AM
Misty,
I fish Hulah from time to time but not as much as I should. There's not too much boat traffic on the lake anymore. The lake is a little older than most around here, it was impounded in 1952 I think. Anyway over the last fifty years the lake has really silted in. I read on the Corps Website that they estimate the amount of silt in the lake to be the size of a football field two miles high. That a lot of silt for a 3800 acre lake. I've been in the middle of the lake and churning mud with the motor. They stopped having local bass tourney's on the lake because too many people were losing the lower end units on their motor. All that being said there not much pressure on Hulah these days. There are still some people that trotline and jug it but hardley ever any ski boats out their. Also Bartlesville's main water supply is from Hulah lake. Four years ago we had a terrible drought and the lake was pretty much left a river channel. I know some people who put a hurting on the population on the lake by taking tons of fish and big fish out of their. I'm also sure a lot of fish died during this time also. There are several good creeks and the caney river that flows into Hulah. I've know of lots of big fish taken over the years out of there. I have a buddy who took a 86 pound flathead out of skull creek a few years ago. Fishing both below Hulah and Copan in the spring can result in lots of big flatheads also. Hulah is only another 10 miles from Copan but since I'm driving past Copan and I know where to catch the fish in thier I rarely go to Hulah.
catfishcentral
12-23-2005, 11:36 AM
Here's a map of Hulah with the following creeks and rivers marked. The Caney river is close to those campsites as you pass the dam. Before you cross the dam you can take the road all the way back to skull creek. It's a couple of miles back there but few people fish it. Also if the water is too high you can't get back there but I've been wanting to camp there and set out a bunch on bank poles to catch some of the blues and flats in the springtime. :D

Chris,
A friend and I were over there a month or two ago and the camping looks pretty nice at the 1st campground, there is another campground that has fallen to rack and ruin if you drive up and around a road to the west(?) from the nice campground.
I just have kayaks and they will usually go anywhere but I did get stuck at the mouth of Bear creek one dry year and had to drag the things thru
3 inches of water and 12 inches of mud. It was still fun but it did teach me kayaks won't float anywhere and that Kaw Lake mud does not wash off withouta pressure washer.
Thanks for the information and map. I will be careful about where I paddle :0a17: My friend Carrie paddled to the mouth of Little Beaver with me &
she told me she would not be going again any time soon so it may be awhile:rolleyes:
Good luck this weekend with your fishing.

Well I spent the last couple of days doing a little jug fishing out on Copan. I tell you what I couldn't find any shad this time at all. My arm was so dang tired from throwing that darn castnet that I went ahead and used my frozen shad. My results with frozen shad have usually been pretty poor, but since I've been using a foodsaver to seal them up nice and fresh there are not near as mushy. I fished for just a couple hours on Wednesday. After three hours of seaching for shad I cut up a bunch a small 3 and 4 inch frozen shad. Two hours later I pulled in 10 bluecats off my twenty jugs ranging from 1 to 6 pounds. I rebaited the rest of the jugs and left them out overnight. I must say I did alright for those frozen shad. I caught 18 bluecats today off my twenty jugs after rebaited them about 3:00 pm on Wednedsay. A majority of my longer line jugs had doubles on each jug. I ran 10 jugs with drops at 3 and 9 feet and 10 jugs with drops at 12 and 16 feet. 75% of my fish came off the longer line jugs today. The fish were mostly on the small side today the biggest one went maybe 5 pounds. The rest were in the one to two pound range, all perfect size for eating. I culled out the smaller fish to keep me legal at 15 fish. Here is a pic of today's catch

Man, gas is getting too dang expensive to be jugging right now, burns too much gas. I actually left the jugs at home at put in at Osage plains and fished the big mud flats just to the South. Shad took forever to catch but caught enough for a night of fishing. The bite was fairly slow but after 7 hours of actually fishing I caught a total of 18 catfish. 16 were bluecats from 1 to 5 pounds, one channel about two pounds and the big boy of the night was a 8 pound Flathead. After not catching anything for about a hour I called it a night around 4:00 am. The bite is usally a lot better this time of year but this no rain crap doesn't seem to be gettting them in a active fishing mood. Hopefully rain will come soon and the logjam up on the caney should be producing good. I had six rods in the water two with large slip floats and the other four with the standard carolina rig. Slip floats produced a lot more fish in about 3 to 4 feet of water.

I think I'll be starting a new thread soon on the caney river by my house. There's no boat ramp access and the banks are steep but there's a couple places to drag a small boat or canoe in my case. The only fuel that canoe needs is a couple two liters of diet coke.

Tony,
How did you know it was cajun red line? Psychic? It got in a big snafu and
I had to finally just cut it off which left me about 20 feet to cast:mad: Then
I did not do as well. Caught about 60 sandies saturday and about 30 sunday. 2 of us were fishing. Catching them on sassy shad-chartreuse and black with a pinkish belly. A few of the sandies I had never seen that big. It was alot of fun. Caught some on kastmasters and little silver with blue top minnow looking lures. We were in an airboat fishing the deep pockets on the river. I catch & release because I don't like to clean the fish. Caught 1 crappie too. It was alot of fun. Blue skies, sunshine & biting fish are hard to beat.
I put some rapala line on my pole this evening. I am sure the cajun red is good line but I tried for 10 minutes to untangle the snafu then Carrie tried for 10 or 15 minutes to untangle the snafu while the other fishermen are just reeling them in. Finally I said just cut the line. I almost always have extra line in my tackle box but of course not this time! I checked the sandbars for arrowheads while they fished:rolleyes: the rest of the day. Still fun but not near as exciting as those sandies when they are biting.

Here's a couple of pics of copan. The first one is a map of the upper end of copan and the little caney river which is the main river that feeds the lake. The log jam several miles up into the river is very impressive to say the least. This blocks the entire river and is about a half mile deep. In the spring time with the water is flowing good this is a great natural barrier for all the fish. The blues will make there migratition up the river and you can do very well. I haven't fished the jam this year waiting in hopes for good rain to get some current going but plan on being up there in the next two weeks or so regardless if we recieve any rain. There's also some open pockets in the log jam anywhere from 1/10 of a acre in size to 1/4 in size that I believe hold some fish. I've always wanted to fish them but either the current is too strong making walking by foot too dangerous or middle of the summer when the heat, gars and turtles are in full force making it not worthwhile.

Copan looks likes it's a little over 3 feet above normal. There's a nice little five acre pond that can be accessed by boat when the water is this high. I lost a very BIG fish last summer in there. Also all the tree tops that are just above the water line at waiting for your lower unit. :ooooh: :ooooh: I have a harder time when the water is up like this from not clobbering my boat.

I wanted to bait up some jugs and then rod and reel but after about a hour of throwing the net and only 20 or so shad I gave up and just baited up four poles. I ended up catching 13 blues from 1/2 pound up to 4 pounds and one 3 pound crappie. He took a fairly big shad on a 6/0 hook. I thought it was a decent catfish while I was reeling him in and was sure surpised to see that big of a crappie. Tom,
I'm sure I'll be out there again before that time and I'll look for ya. I've been having lots of luch fishing the shallows on the north end of the islands right next to the creek and river channels. The channel is loaded with fish and is even better when there a North wind blowing toward the islands. The water levels are high enough that you should also be able to take your boat up cotton creek a ways. Always good fishing around the big island, cotton creek and butler creek area's on the upper North East side of the lake. Oh and those bullheads won't work on Copan for Flathead. I suggest you give them to me. I wish I had a source for bullheads as I would love to put some on limblines up near the logjam.

I fished Copan last night for a few hours. I went with the intentions of fishing for Flatheads and brought plenty of perch. I caught five blues all right at 4 to 5 pounds each. I was having a little motor problem and didn't feel like getting stuck too far out in the forest so I headed home. I had some pretty decent size perch on my lines and was surprised to catch that small of blue cat. Hopefully the big blues will be done with spawning soon cause I'm having a hard time catching any decent size flatheads this year on Copan.

Man, it's been a couple months since I've been on Copan and over a month since I even fished last. The weather been so dang hot and new job been keeping fairly busy. I had a couple of buddies that wanted to catch some fish and clear deer stand sites up by my lake for upcoming bow season. It was hot and clearing lanes to bow hunt is not fun in the heat but we threw out some jugs while we worked. We ended up catching 16 blues on Friday night and another 20 on Saturday. We didn't harvest any monsters but took a lot of nice 3 to 4 pounders. Hopefully cooler weather and rain will be coming soon. The lake is fairly low right now and getting to my favorite shad holes and secret fishin spots were tough. Come on rain.

Well it's seems like forever since I last fished Copan or fished at all for that matter. I have been out there quite a bit this fall but only to deer hunt. I got one more bow hunt in me before the years out, going to do a little catfishing weather permitting with the kiddo's on Friday and do a Saturday bow hunt to end out the year. Jan through March are some great times for big blues on Copan. I heard of a another 70 pounder taken two weeks ago. Lake is down about 2 1/2 feet and there's some places on the North end that are a little hard to get to right now. There's a big boy in there somewhere with my name on it.

Brian,
Just shoot me a PM whenever you come up this way to fish. I'm not always able to go because of family but if I have no plans with them I'm usually trying to fish somewhere and company is always nice.

I had a buddy of mine come up to fish Copan with me and the boy. We didn't get out on the water until 6:30 Friday night. The wind was terrible on the North end of the lake so we headed up into the river channel to get out of the wind. Shad were tough to find but got enough to bait 52 jugs. Shad were all nice 5 to 6 inchers but had to cut into 5 pieces apiece to have enough for all the hooks. We ran the jugs this morning and had 45 fish on one run of the jugs. We baited up poles and caught another 19 fish from 1 to 4 today. We didn't catch any monsters biggest went 12 pounds but plenty of good eaters 2 to 5 pounds each. The 12 pounder looked like at normal size would have been 8 pounds but is stomach was so dang extended, bigger than any winter bluecat I've ever caught. Hopefully he will be 30 pounds when he is caught next time . We culled out the small ones and the 12 pounder and fillet 45 fish for the three of us. Just looking at my last time to post a fishing report from Copan it's been 6 months....can't believe it's been that long since I last fished this lake. The preswpawn is definatly in full swing and there biting everything in site.

Whew, here's this thead for ya Ron. It's been Archived for a while, I'm pretty much the only one around here that fishes it and it's been awhile since I was there last. Any questions I'm happy to answer for ya. Going to try and find a sitter for the kids sometime this week hopefully and sneak out for a while. Hopefully I'll have a good report to post.

I don't know those particular names but, I'll talk to a lot of people when I'm out on the water. I remember a boat many times before I seem to remember somebody's name at times. I'm the guy in the 17ft gray Alumaweld with a 75hp Yamaha on back.

Went out on Copan to do a little fishing and pull down a couple of treestands I had up there. I got to my stands to find nothing but a hacksawed chain where my stands use to be. I hate when they get stolen. While going back in search of shad I got high centered on a couple of submereged stumps and broke my transducer. :sad2: This is the third time that's happened to me in the last four years. Those things get a little expensive. I threw the net for hour but without my sonar to find those shad down deep it ended up being a worthless and expensive trip. No fish today.

I had a little time on Sunday and headed out to Copan. The wind was terrible but otherwise a pretty day. Put in at Osage plains and headed up the river channel out of the wind and hopefully find some blues up in the river channel. Lake is still above normal pool and I believe there's still a lot of fish in the flooded timber and marsh area's. I marked some fish on sonar but not too many. I ended up catching 6 blues and 2 channels in about 3 hours on the water.
Been forever since I fished Copan nice to get out there and wet a line.

It's always better than workin', Chris. Sounds like a fish fry, anyway.

You got that right. Ive been working way too much lately. Now that the kiddo's are out of school and not taking them to soccer, basketball, karate practice and no homework help I might get a little fishing in this summer.
Had catfish for dinner tonight...sure was good. The freezer had been empty for 4 months. That hasn't happened in 7 years.
