me and tony put out some hooks saturday night and only caught 1 op about 5 pounds. we was gona run them last night, but once we saw how awful they were biting, we rolled us our mess and came home. if we don't get some rain to get some current in the river, the fishin' is gona continue to be bad!!!!

i went froggin' again last night. thats 4 nights in a row. man i got to get some rest!!!! 4 night total was 258 frogs. first night we caught 107 in 3 hours. it don't get much better than that!! been having to work for them pretty hard since. i saved a little honey hole for friday night when tony was with me. he was a little rusty on his handgrabbing technique. he missed the first frog!!! and ooohhh yeah, i let him have it!!!! lol i don't know if he didn't want to hear me rag on him any more, or just wanted them frogs pretty bad, because after that first miss, he caught about ten in a row without a miss. he ended up grabbing 30 in just over an hour. thank goodness carmen was with us. it was some real rough mess we were hunting. it was a whole lot of push polling and paddling going on. she was always busy pushing one way or the other. with tony as dead weight in the front end, pointing and barking commands, i really don't think i could have made it without carmen.

well i'm fixin' to go pile up and sleep for the next couple days!!!!

Thanks for the offers to get the SS Minnow home but I think I'm going to go ahead and put a tow package on melanie's pathfinder tomorrow on my way go get it.
Yall got any advice on replacing the water pumps on a Mercury 7.5 and a Mercury 9.5? They're both probably still good but I thought I'd go ahead and replace them right off the bat. Do yall know how much I'm looking at to get them replaced?

I'm probably going to launch at Teague Sunday and try both motors out.
If the 9.5 motor works well I'm going to sell the 7.5 and get a little money back.
I can help with that. I have replaced a few in my days of the 9.8 mercs. just not tonight. I have to go pull moby dicks bro off the lines. LOL

Thread 4. I thought they used to use roman numerals to number our threads. I guess they're anticipating having to use M's and Z's eventually to number this thread so they just switched to regular numbers.

Just got in and I mean this with all due respect people are Stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our plane was 45 minutes late leaving DFW so we had to wait 2 hours and 45 minutes the whole time we waited a lady was putting on makeup at the gate. We board the plane and she is across the aisle and one row up from me and is still putting on make-up. The plane pulls away from the gate and she pulls out a book fo matches lights on and puts it on one of those make-up pencils. The whole plane smells like smoke now nobody else saw here so they are calling the flight attendent to report smoke. The FA goes past me to the back of the plane to check it out and I turn to the lady behind me who was freaking out and told here the mak-up lady used a match to do something to that pencil thing. I thought this would calm here down and we could get home. NO she calls the FA back up there and points to the make-up lady and says she is setting stuff on fire. The FA goes to the make-up lady asked here if she lit a match she says no. My boss is setting next to me and the FA asked him if he saw her light a match he says no but points to me and says he did. Next thing I know the plane stops on the runway while th FA is on the phone, so here we go back to the gate and the make-up lady is taken off the plane. Then they had to take all my info(tis can't be good). Then they had to recheck the baggage. All in all it took 5 hours to get from Dallas to S'port.

The wind was blowing my jugs north. So no current and the bite was not good where I was. But I was in the wrong place again.

Just thought I would let yall know that Ersel and I are working on a new noodle design. We took some pics today and I will try to down load them to the general catfishing page this afternoon or this evening. I think this design should up the ante a little on the whole situation!

Went out and did the cop thing last night and had a blast! I forgot how much I enjoy that. Really makes you feel good when yo get drugs and drunk drivers off the street.

Robert, did you join the BCPD Aux?

Man, yall missed a good time at location "X" last night. The fish were biting, the Rev was in the house and Roxie flashed us all!

We only had two bummers this weekend

1. I learned that my scales were reading low by two pounds. This caused my 57 to weigh 55 and it resulted in Tony letting a 34 go thinking it was 32. Result: Team Slimed Hare is down by 4 pounds.

2. We were unable to better the Team Score and we have called it quits for this tournament.

I am going to bed for a hour or two. I am tired. Fishing till mid night since Wens and going to work early. A man has got to get his rest some time or another. nigth. Kevin, call me. Oh, and after listing to Rob talk about how slow my boat is, my 25hp 4 stroke is for sale. I am going back to a 30 or 40 so I can out run Rob and avoide the big wake of the new Sea Ark. The 25hp pushs my big boat fine empty, but when I load up with the live well and all the gear, you can hear the motor laboring. So I think it is time get a bigger one. Then maybe the birds want be out running me.

Well, we had a BLAST last night. It was so good to meet up with everyone, and swap lies...tales, swap tales. Rev. Ty was in fine form last night, my stomach is sore today from laughing so much.

It was 4:13 this a.m. when I pulled the boat out of the water. Don't know the final count, (cause I went to sleep while Eric and Rev. were cleaning 'em), but we had a 120qt. ice chest almost full of 1-4# (?) bluecats. Good eatin' fish.

Buddy, we picked up one of your jugs, found it hung up near the bank. I like the set-up you've got on those babies. Nice. Oh, and Roxie, keep on flashing 'em dear.

Might go up to Vivian to watch the races tonight. If I can't actually race this weekend, maybe hearing the engines revvin' up and smelling the methanol will hold me for a couple of weeks. :tounge_out:

Good luck to any who are going out on the river tonight.

Great time on the river last night!!!! Really enjoyed getting to visit with everyone!! Me and Carmen and the Rev ended up with 89 cats! They were biting a lot better in the daylight! Carmen worked her tail off on the nose of my boat pickin' up them jugs all night! What a woman!!! I saw Roxie in action on the front of there boat goin' at em too!! She did stop long enough to flash us though! I hope she didn't get mad when I flashed her back! When I flashed her she started hollerin' "My God, I can feel the heat off that thing from here!" :ooooh:

I can't think of a better way to spend a night. Spendin' time with Carmen and a pile of friends while floatin' down the river under the stars! That's the stuff beer commercials are made from. It just doesn't get any better than this!

Hey Ya'll!!! I see we have once again exceeded 200+ threads on the Red River site and are now starting Part 4. That is a whole bunch of yaking going on here (2168 posts in Part 3) and not only just those who post here but we have also attracted the attention of well over 25,000 viewers to this thread. For that reason I thought it would be appropriate for an explanation of just WHO Red River Rednecks are for those who visit this site and spend hours reading what we Rednecks post.

Red River Rednecks are a group of people who fish in the Red River around the Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana area. Some live in the Shreveport and Bossier area while others live outside the area. There are some, like yours truely, who even live in another state! So, where you live has no bearing on being a Red River Redneck, it's what's inside of you that counts!

Red River Rednecks respect God and Our Country. We live in the greatest country in the world, even though we do have our problems for sure, there is no better place to live, than the Good Ole USA!!! We are proud of our heritage and our freedom and will defend her at all cost if the need be!!! We are a group of people who believe in God and the Moral Values that go along with our belief!!!

Red River Rednecks LOVE to catfish!!! We do it by any and every LEGAL means we know and have been known to try many different variations upon said means, some work and some don't, but we believe in being SLIMED!!!

Red River Rednecks believe in fellowship and friendship!!! If one of our own is in need, they know that the others will be there to support them by whatever means they can!!! Our group is so much more than just a group of people who fish the Red River, we are a FAMILY!!! We share our joys and our pains, we laugh together and we cry together and we live life to it's fullest!!!

We believe catfish were meant to be EATEN!!!

And if you've ever visited this site before than you know we like to TALK SMACK!!! It's our way of keeping in touch with each other and what's going on in our lives when we are apart!!! We love to get together and fish and visit and swap stories! And when we can't, then we POST!!! We invite anyone who shares our values and love of catfish to come and be a Red River Redneck!!!

Hey Ya'll, IT WAS GREAT TO BE BACK OUT ON THE RIVER!!! It was sure good to see everyone out on the river last night!!!

I could sure tell that some people have missed seeing me out on the river, heck Roxie was so excited she was FLASHING everyone and so Eric decided to return the favor and flashed her back, I wish you could have been there to see the look on her face, her mouth dropped open and she said, "I can feel the HEAT coming off that thing!!" Hehehe!!!

I am so humbled to have each of you as friends!!! And even though I know some who wouldn't want me to say a word, I'm going too!!!

I want to thank Eric and Carmen for getting me out of the house for a little Red River Therapy!!! I had the best time fishing with them and seeing everyone again out on the river!!! Then to top it all off, Eric took me to his house and cleaned the fish for me so I would have some to EAT!!! (Red River Redneck Core Value, Catfish Were Meant To Be Eaten!!!) Not only that but he also had a cooler full of dressed fish to go along with those we caught and some other goodies to go along with the fish!!! THANK YOU, ERIC!!!

I was feeling a little in debt to him for doing all this for me and then it dawned on me that "THIS ISN'T A DEBT TO BE REPAID BUT A FRIENDSHIP TO BE SHARED!!!" God Bless, Good Luck and Good Fishin!!!

Sounds like yall did good juggin.

It's official: I'm now "with boat". I got a hell of a deal too. I'm going to launch at sunup and air out both motors and then toss out a few jugs and tight line south of JD bridge.

BadBob, sorry if I gave you some bad information on that stray jug. I saw your friends come down and look at it and leave it alone. Yall were running a pretty tight formation of jugs so I thought a monster might have pulled that one under and moved it way off. I hope someone picked it up.

See yall later.

Hey Ya'll, I here tale that the Rev has come up with some new concoction that can be added to whatever bait your fishin like chicken gizzards or chicken hearts or cut shad and it may even help the fish to bite better than they would without it!!! Let's see 89 fish!!! Might just be something to this!!!

Oh man, I have got to quit thinking out loud!!! Hehehe!!!

Good definition of a Red River Redneck Rev Ty. This area might not be the best place to live with regards to crime, poverty, etc., but we probably have the best catfishermen and women this side of the Mississippi and by the best catfishermen I don't mean they necessarily catch catfish that well (Buddy). They're just good people that do good things.

No offense Buddy I couldn't help myself.

Well said Rev! I am proud to be among people of such high caliber (not hunting rifles Buddy). I am so glad Sgt Rob had a bad trailer. If his trailer had not gone south on him and was not bringing it to work all the time I never would have seen those stickers on the motor and pulled over there and checked out that well organized boat. Thanks Rob for all the advertising.

What a fun 2 nights! Friday night, running with the Rev, Eric & Carmen. And yes, the Rev must have a new "concoction" for attracting fish, because, whew! I know they'd probably all had a bath recently, but something in that boat had a smell!! And the Rev's wearing rubber gloves to bait up! He looked like one very happy kid playing in a bucket of very smelly Play-Doh! Then, we meet up with Tony & Rob. Said they'd been out bait-fishing & baiting up; always @ some "secret" spot! But, as Rob said, we DID meet up @ Location X!! And poor Tony...my boat's so slow. I can't keep up; it's going in the shop...I see what you've been talking about, Eric! Haha! Tony, once you get that motor problem taken care of, you know you won't have an excuse!! Hey, if our little boat with it's itty-bitty 15horse can run with you, come on! And, yep, I guess I did **flash em**!:ooooh: What's bad is, they all laughed at me! I told em, "I don't care! Buddy bought em for me, & I like em"!! But Eric just about knocked me outta the boat when he returned the favor!! Whoa there, boy! Ran into Joe Bull & company out there also. The one time we stopped to visit, we were so close to that loud generator(whatever that thing is), that we couldn't hardly hear each other. Sounds like y'alls night was about like ours.
We ended up with 10fish Friday night; 1 was 7 lbs. Had a sink full of fillets & whole ones. Not bad.
Our son, Tony, went with us last night. (That's Shadow's dad) We went out from Teague's. His first time to run noodles. He really enjoyed it. By the time we headed back, at almost 1:00a.m.!, he was an old hand at it. Buddy asked him if he enjoyed it; he said "Yep, I was fishing!" He found out that you really don't have time to sit for very long! I don't know how many we got; I'll let Buddy post it, after he cleans fish! But we had a better night than we did Friday! Guess I better go get something else accomplished (done..Buddy). Sorry for the long post, just didn't want to run a bunch of short ones.

I took the SS Shad out this morning. I launched it with the 9.8 Merc on it. It ran pretty poor. It wouldn't get up to speed. I ran it about 3-5 minutes. It would only get a little above idle speed so I pulled it out and put the 7.5 Merc on it. It ran pretty shaky at first so I was getting pretty bummed out. I went ahead and put out some jugs just down from the launch and then waited on a sand bar and tight lined while I waited for them to come down stream. I checked them after about an hour and caught 3 nice blues. While I was picking up the jugs I noticed the engine was running alot better. I ran the jugs one more time and caught a couple more. By the time I headed for the launch it was running real good.

My hope is that the 9.8 will begin to run better if I just cruise around awhile. The 9.8 hasn't been run in about 18 months and the 7.5 wasn't run since January this year.

Do yall think engines that have sat up as long as these will naturally run poor for awhile and then get better?

Alsey,
You probably need to clean the carb out or just run the dog snot out of it a couple times to get the varnish out. If you need help with the carb let me know. Won't take long to clean it out. I would put new plugs and an impeller in it. I can help if you need it.

Okay, I can't stand the thoughts going through yalls heads here any more. The flashing Roxie did was with her new LED lights that Buddy got her. There are three of them that fit under the brim of her hat, and she can make them flash on and off. So as I think Eric said "Roxie flashed us." Now I think Eric flashed Roxie back with a Q-beam, and Roxie could feel the heat coming off the thing it is so bright. Just so no one gets the wrong ideas and start calling us a 3x thread. LOL. Twelve months and a few miles later...well you could smell him coming! I wasn't suppose to tell you but Tony is now a member of the Red River Redneck Metrosexual Society. We metrosexed that boat up one side and down the other yesterday.
It sure don't look nothing like that any more does it.

I can not beleive you told them. Now Kevin is going to be upset when I don't show up at his place for my next class. He is going to drive by and catch me cleaning something at your class and it his feelings are going to be hurt. You have mess up my rep as a uncoth river bumm for sure now.

Jim I would for sure clean the carbs up, and run some "Sea Foam" in a couple of tanks of gas. That stuff will help cut the junk out of the carbs. Change the impeller and run the dog out of them both. The worse thing that can be done to a motor is to be set up. 2 or 4 stroke.

Jim you can get the SeaFoam from Advanced Auto on B'dale Blvd. What mixture of gas/oil are you using? What kind of oil are you using? I was fond of Quicksilver back when I had a 2-stroke. Some folks will argue that 2-stroke oil is 2-stroke oil. I bet they never ran that crap I ended up turning in to the recycler because my Johnson hated it!

OK,our count for last night was 25 fish with the total weight of 32 lbs. 5 oz. We had a lot of what we rednecks call pan fryers which we will have tonight for supper (dinner if your not redneck).I gave my mom and dad a mess of pan fryers which she said she was going to cook tomorrow night.
I had a great time Friday night with the bunch we met up with.Jim it sounds like you have varnish build up in the carbs.....

LOL. You dirty minded people.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I just used generic engine oil mixed 50:1. I'll try adding some sea foam to the tank. I have no idea what an impeller is or does but I'll look into that too.

Roxie I've got a set of those Cat Eyes that clips under the brim of your hat. That thing is awesome except when it's on you have to remember not to look directly at the person you're talking to or you'll blind them.

Yeah, now I can get to all the sand bars and open banks that I used to couldn't get to!!! That little 14 ft jon boat isn't the most stable platform. I'll get my sea legs pretty soon I hope. I just about have to crawl to get from the back to the front of the boat. I just about ended up in the drink trying to reach out for a noodle today.

Jim try Sea foam it works real good on marine applications costs about $6.50 for a pint but that treats 20 gal of gas guaranteed to clean varnish out the carb and also works as a stabilizer.

I went to Cash Point rod and reel fishing this evening. I took a friend of mine, James Davis. He cooked up a mess of fish after Church today and we decided we better hurry up and catch some more to replace them! I told him we would just fish a couple flats and try to catch some good whole fryers! But I just couldn't help myself, first place we set up on was a scour hole that is known to hold some good sized fish. Didn't take long either. First bite I got of the day turned out to be a 7 pounder. Didn't catch anything else in that hole and after about ten more minutes, we cranked up and ran down river to try the flats. The bite was pretty good. We fished the flats for 3 hours from 7 till 10. We ended up catching 29 cats total. I even managed to catch a 15.5 lber on one of the flats. Had a 48 quart cooler of fish. I gave them all to James. That means I'm out of fish again!!! ......I guess I'll go back in the morning and catch some more!!! My grandpa will be here at 5 a.m. I guess I better go take a nap!

I would put some new spark plugs in the 9.8. I'd run midgrade gas in it too. Also, those old Mercs use more oil in the mix than newer ones. If you don't know the model year, you can find your serial number and get the info off the web. Oldmercs.com I think. If not there, you can register on the iboats forum and post and someone will help. I've got a '63 9.8 in storage. It's the black with silver, but the newer went to a black with blue best I remember (70s). I did know where there was a 7.5 parts motor in a pawn shop. Some of those old motors are hard to get parts for. I had to have a prop, and ending up finding one in Washington. While I had it down, I found the prop shaft was bent. No way to get a good used or new one, but I sent it to a shop in Vidor, TX and they straightened the old one. Just like new.

Oldmercs.com has alot of parts for those old motors. You have to call because they don't have everything listed on the web site. I have a 1964 65 horse on a 1965 Glastron that I bought parts to rebuild off of Oldmercs.

Well I managed to make it through another weekend without going fishing. :sad2: Started yesterday working on the cj's. I really wanted to get one going. Then it turned into "bring your junk over and get it worked on day". I put all new pulley's on my buddy's lawnmower, welded up the stabilizer bar on my dad's tractor, changed the oil, parking light housing and starter solenoid on my wife's old car, and I had to help my grandmother make a certificate for someone getting licensed to preach, and I had to fix the lights in my garage and move stuff around and on and on and on and on. I was up there at 11:00 last night pouring sweat and all I got done on the cj's was gettin the front end pulled out from underneath one of them. I keep telling myself I'm gonna get it done, but I ain't getting no closer. Noticed a pinion bearing and seal needs replacing. AAAAAAAHHHHH. I should just forget it and go fishing.

[QUOTE=reverend_ty]Hey Ya'll!!!

Well said Rev. I'm glad to hear that you went out this weekend and that you'll be ready to fish this fall at the Fall R4!

There's small yellow globules of oil or grease floating on the surface of the water I'm running it in. Any cause for alarm?

Two strokes put some oil in the water. There will usually be a film on the water when I have run my old 9.8 in a barrel. Have you checked the lower unit lube? Wouldn't hurt to check/change it. Watch and see if you have any water in the grease.

Solomon, sorry 'bout the dog. Sounds like your story might make a great country song.

Jim, chances are that is lower unit lube you are seeing. Drain a little out and see if it is milky in color. If it is, you have a leak and will need to replace the seals. You may as well put on a new impeller (water pump) while your in there. Get the numbers to Bobpaul on his thread and he might guide you through the process and help you find the parts if oldmerc doesn't have them.
