How many Nebraska members would be interested in a possible gathering next year sometime. I would be happy to coordinate it all, and would like to start early. Can anyone think of some possible places?
Branched Oak

Please chime in with recommendations. I say open to our Iowa brothers also, since a couple of em that I know live in Council Bluffs which is right accross the river from Omaha.
Let me know ya'll

If I might suggest including Northwest Missouri Also because I would love to meet all of you guys and gals and it wouldn't be too much of a drive for us.
But as I said just a suggestion thanks,pk powell:big_smile:

i think branced oaks would be great, we can all just wrap around that lake, meet up at certain times of the days and share our tips and ideas and see whats working. if you get us all in on a BBQ or something, i am gonna go out on a branch here and say alot of beer would be a necessity also? wouldnt you all think. i am in. let me know. Oh of course, in fact I wouldn't turn down anyone. That just wouldn't be right. But of course when it comes to Nebraska non-residents you would have to purchase a non-resident liscense (or temporary liscense.) You know just to stay legal.
Ok, that's one vote for Branched Oak, which is also my first pick. It's rated high for Channels, and we've all heard about them flatheads they've got in there.
I'm a very organized person (damn VIRGO,) so if I get pushy please someone yell at me:big_smile:

Depending on you want to do it and when, I think there are far better places for a BOC gathering than BO in mid-summer, IMO. Branched Oak is very crowded with boats and water ski's on the weekends. Not great for bank fisherman with all the traffic. If you waited until September or did it early in like May, it might be OK especially if you were going to hold this over a whole weekend or something.
It's a good idea though. Let me know if I can help.

Yeah that's the only think I hate about Branched Oak. If you want to camp you have to get their early a lot of times. But another reason I liked it is because on one side you have the modern camping sites where they have electricity and showers. Of course I don't need these niceties, but if someone did then it would be available. Thanks Steve. Great input.
Shane
i think its a great idea, theres a lake i always go to called burchard lake, its got good fishing and stuff like that and u dont have to worry about those pesky tubers or skiers, the camping is ok too.

I wouldn't think BO would be all that bad Wagontrain and Willow Creek are also some ideas to throw out there.

May I kindly ask why the Beer? Can't we all just have somewhere were we can meet each other and have alot of good fishing and meeting new friends does there alsways have to be alcholol involved? Whatever happened to just good friends good times Ice tea and lemonade,I guess I'm old fashioned just really prefer to be around people who are sober:0a36: pk powell

Doesn't Nebraska offer one or two days a year that people can fish withhout a license. The Keystone gathering is always held on the days Oklahoma has its free fishing days...helps the out of state people who have to spend money on gasoline a little.
And, Ms PK, your right. Alcohol need not be a central or even an important part of a gathering of people to develop friendship and fish. But, to each his or her own.

Sounds like a plan Shane, just have to start getting things in order now so that when it gets closer we don't have to stress about the little things. What about a little makeshift tourney? I don't know if alcohol is allowed at state parks, but if a person choses to have a beer I don't see a problem with that, when they decide to have a bunch of beer thats when things get out of hand. Let's keep this one going and see if this idea is even feasible.

AwShucks you're a genious. Thanks for such a great idea. Nebraska's free fishing day is usually near the end of May. This year it was May 20th.
And I agree that alcohol should not be a reason for going, but I also agree that sometimes kicking back around the campfire, telling fishing stories, with a cold one in hand isn't a bad thing. So as long as everyone is responsible, I don't see a problem with it. Then again like TA2D states, I don't think you can legally drink alcohol on a state park. But that has never stopped my grandfather, my father, everyone else there, and honestly myself.

I think the idea is very feasible, but it has to be well organized. With the free fishing day, it also includes getting into state parks for free on that day. Now for the out of staters, one day may not be worth the drive. So my next plan would be to take donations to make sure our non-residents are taken care of for park permits and non-resident permits.

SudDawg,
I would love to fish along side of you. It's always an honor to meet a person that is in your shoes. I pray everyday for all the men and women in uniform to come home standing on their own.
I'd like to throw in my vote for Wagontrain down south of Lincoln. They have "redone" the lake, and Im heading out there monday morning(Labor Day). It's about an hour and a half from Omaha. The local news says that the cats are hittin really good. And I would love to meet other BOC/SOC members too!
As for the alchohol, all state parks here in Nebraska is a big no-no. But some places sell just outside the entrances. And the DNR people will let things slide, if the adults are being responsible about it, and don't get out of hand. Personally, I like to have a few now and then. But I also respect the laws, the rules, and the regulations of all states. So I can live with it or without it.

IMO I think The lake of the ozarks in MO would be good But that is just my opinion. We all or maybe not all Know how good the fishing is there and we could get a whole cove there are some really big ones. But that is just may two cents worth.
Lake of the Ozarks would be a killer place to have a gathering, but In all honesty I don't believe it would be the best place for affordability, and time. All of us would have to purchase Missouri non-resident permits, and it would me a much farther drive.

I would vote for somewhere on the missouri. Missouri conditions might however be unpredictable 6mo in advance.
Wonder if bellview marina allows that (cost?).

I love fishing on the Missouri, although you are very correct about trying to predict the conditions of the river that far in advance. Speaking of the river, where and how did you catch that monster on your profile?

Shane,
Since this site is about sharing info, I think picking the brains of some of the brothers who were in the trenches planning the National Gathering is a must (maybe you already have) I would think they would have great insight and pointers on doin this thing right down to the last detail.
I do think we should keep this in NE, at least for the inagural year, just for simplicity sake.

Sorry ya'll, I haven't been on near as much since I've got back. I still want to set this up at least for the Nebraska members and the immediate surrounding area members. I've been real busy there at STRATCOM at Offutt AFB, but I applied for a security manager position at another unit on base. With that job comes better hours, and normal work days (M-F.) I'm really hoping on this job because I've been told that if I don't get the job, then I should look forward to being reassigned to the 4 star general's personal security detail. Great job for the career, most horrible hours ever (constantly back and forth from Omaha to the Pentagon.) Let's hope for the best.
I'm still looking at Branched Oak as the most likely place. It has been the predominate pick in the poll. Thanks everyone. Later

i think we should get some boats together and have the gathering on a mizzou river sandbar, i'd be willing to volunteer my boat would be good to fish 3 or so people. i think it would be a good chance to hook into some good fish, and their is nothing like camping on a sandbar also. their are several ramps one in ponca, bellvue. i most often frequent the one in plattsmouth and have a few spots where i can pretty much garuntee fish their. also neb city and brownville.

You wouldnt be stepping on anyones toes. I would love to get together at a lake somehwhere here. Suddawg has to go away, and I think some of us relied on him to get this "event" together for the rest of us (and that would include me as well).

Id love to help out. I just dont know what to do. Give me a warehouse full of inventory, and I can get it organized fast. When it comes to people, Im lost.
First, we need to find dates that people are willing to go. Then I guess we need to know how many people would be attending. We are going to need to start a new thread under the "Nebraska" section, like a sign up sheet. Have people tell us how many will be in their party etc... Then how many campsites are a vailable, and is it possible to reserve those campsites for the people that have signed up, and pay up front to ensure our reservations. Are you able to find out the cost?
As far as winning biggest fish or any other contest, I dont know how we would give out any prizes. I would like to keep this event as low cost as possible. I do like the idea of fishing "worry free".
I do want to get down there this weekend, or next and look at the lake to make sure its got water in it. Buddy at work told me he was there 3 years ago and it was very low. I have no boat, so I would bank fish. Others with boats, may have issue with no ramp.
I would love to make this happen, and I would appreciate any help from you and any others too.

Greetings fellow Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri people, and everybody else. This is a thread to find out how many people would like to attend a gathering at Branched Oaks in May, possibley May 18-20th. We need to decide on a weekend, and I need to know how many people would be attending.
I called Branched Oaks office today, and found out the following info:
Primitive camping is $6.00 per night, per tent. Some places are able to hold up to 4 tents comfortably. Sadly the primitive lots are NOT RESERVABLE. But Im trying to get that changed for this event. I make no garuntees.
Pads for campers/fifth-wheels range from $15-$19 per night. The higher cost is for electric, water and sewage all in one.
Each camping location has a picninc table, and fire ring.
I/WE will need to apply for a tournament permit. I have one coming in the mail as of today.
Showers  are located in 4 different areas of the park. Campers in area 4 do not have to pay, but must be registered to area 4 to receive this ammenity. The rest of the showers are coin operated.
Also I am told that area 5 is scheduled to be dredged, but they have no time frame as to when they will start.
If you are VERY interested in attending, or are certain that you want to attend, I will get you and your "crew" on our list, and give more details as they become available. Also, the dates above listed are not garunteed as of yet. Douglas_413 and myself are going to do our best to get this going. Any input and knowledge of Branched Oaks would be greatly appreciated.
Kenny
P.S.
Thanks to Suddawg for getting this started, I just hope we can follow through, and make it an anual event.

Do you have to have it May 19th thru 20th. Those are the dates for the Missouri gathering at Truman. I have been wanting to meet Suddawg for a long time as we use to email frequently when he was in Kuwait. I hate to ask but I would consider coming if you all could move up the dates a little. Of course I also would want you to do as you think is best and whatever is most feasible for everyone. I don't want to put anyone out or cause a strain of any kind. It was just a suggestion. Hey everyone, thanks for keeping this thing going. I really liked the idea of having a gathering for us here in this great state, and figured I would have no problems for organizing it. The Air Force thought otherwise, and inserted me into a new mission for the U.S. Strategic Command. I have to deploy with this new mission within the U.S. every few months. It keeps me from deploying to the sandbox again, but it makes for a hectic time to plan anything. I hope to be able to make it. Just got back from Branched Oaks. (I dont work on mondays:ooooh: ) I talked to several staff members there and they told me that the water is only down three feet. All boat ramps are currently accessible and able to launch boats. They could not reserve any sites for us as a group. Site 11 looked to be the best for us. There are plenty of camping spaces, although kinda close together, and it also has a boat ramp, and showers:big_smile: . Everyone will need a State Park Permit, and they sell daily permits for $4.00 a piece.
All flatheads and wipers are strictly catch and release.
The later we go (suumer time), the more boats and jet-skis will be on the lake. So we need to lock in a date soon. I still havent heard from you good people what dates are best for you, Im pretty flexible.
May 18-20 there will be a gathering in Oklahoma, and I dont want to schedule the same dates as that event. Im personally leaning towards June 15-17. But I need more feedback from you people.
