Ok....I guess this is going to be my first post in the "new" BOC, and I'm at a loss for words.LOL. Alexis and I had a great time fishing the Maple this past weekend, even though we didn't catch any fish. The theme of not catching fish is starting to become habit forming to say the least, and that's not a good thing. We figure to have one more opportunity to do a "group hug" before the season is lost, so does anybody have any good suggestions for September? By the way, it was good meeting new folks like Jon, Doug and Chris(who's not a member) but a great guy to talk to about flathead fishing. It was good seeing Sal and Don again, and guys, when we get together again let's catch some fish for once! LOL.

Anytime we can make it happen Tea. This past weekend I spoke to the guys about possibly fishing the Maumee once we determine what it will cost in permit fees and such. You got any suggestions for a good campsite in that area? I'd love to do some catfishing in Ohio and show you guys up in your own state!LOL.
Thanks again,

Buckeyes vs Wolverines
Now, this could really be alot of fun. It would have to be a Saturday or Sunday to be feasable for me. Sunday would be the best but we can possibly do an overnight Saturday/Sunday and have fun with it. We could do some sort of trophy for the state each year and pass back and forth or just some sort of prize. Heck, I would just like to see Sal and Vic in some great Scarlet and grey. It would be open to everyone and a blast I think. Everyone could throw out some suggestions.
The 28th I am in a Hold Em tournament with Scotty Nguyen here in Circleville so that would not be a good day. Any other time should be good. Tea

Tea, you unfortunately misguided man....
Think long and hard about just showing up to the future Maumee gathering in maize and Blue. you're gonna be leaving in those colors anyhow, why delay the inevitable???!!!!
COPIED AND POSTED FROM THE OLD SITE THIS MORNING:
Brothers, another great weekend passed and sadly we didnt get but 3 turtles the whole time, two of which were the same snapper biting twice and the other was about a 40 year old box turtle.
It didnt matter. It was still a joy.
There is nothing in the world like august nights in michigan. The light but growing sting of fall is starting to add its pungent scent to the night air this time of year, the asteroids and the owls and the racoons and even the occasional peacock really enhance any trip to the maple around august- and life rarely gets better than that...
Rarely... when the fish finally bite.
So we ALL got skunked.
Better it happens to a group than leave any one single in the dust behind a herd of successful fishermen right? Or at least thats what we're telling ourselves. LOL
I did have a great time. I peeked into the lives of two fellows I had not met before, showed them a glimpse of the guy I am, and showed Vic's good-luck-charm-daughter what a banana boat was and how they can help to make the worst night of fishing into the coolest event ever. Alexis was a great little lady- her daddy a proud one and rightfully so.
Perhaps by summer's end we will have to go south to get into the flatties on the Grand OR get into Ohio to the Maumee. One thing's for sure- Michigan guys have a new friendship- One not only based on butter shots and fire-cooking.... it is based on the true comeraderie- when one gets skunked, we leave no unsuccessful brother behind. We join each other in the misery that is the occasional low.
LMAO

thanks for updating the site sal.
did you guys have live 'gills this time?
we need to hit some flats up really soon.
when shall we visit Jon and the grand?
let me know when you guys have free time so we can start planning.
did you drag the boat out this weekend?
there is probably like a good month left to fish down by the dam in allegan(steel and salmon run), so if that's also another when planning.

Jim
We had live gills, dead gills crawlers, and shrimp... nothing worked.
It was hell.
I may go out and grab another night on the allegan with you. Depends on wether you will be there, wether I take the boat, how many weekends I can snag away from work, and general timing. I like that river a lot, man.... A WHOLE lot.
Talk to you more about it soon, Iam sure.

Sorry Don, I've been so caught up that I haven't visited this section. We have to try to go to the Maumee before this year is out. Nineteen dollars won't break me, and I can cut down on my travel for once. I don't think we have to worry about salmon runs in the Maumee, but if any of you Ohio brothers are viewing this let us know. As a matter of fact, how does mid September sound Don? My current crop of classes end around that time and I have a two week break before the next crop of classes. I'll be willing to help out with the fuel expenses if you bring your boat. That trip will probably be our last opportunity to catch flatheads OR we could do the deed on Belleville Lake for channels in my area if we can't coordinate a flathead trip. I'd just like to do one more boat trip with you brother before the year is out. Hey, man I can't get into those jars of goodies that you gave me.LOL. I want to give you a report, but the jars are resisting my efforts so far... :crying:

Hey guys,
Nice new site. I had a little trouble getting in, but I think I'm in now. How has everyone been? It sounds like the Maple river trip was a great time, but no fish! Well, we must remember that the whole idea of getting together is to see each other and make new friends. I believe you did that.
I've been putting in alot of hours on the farm, but enjoying the work.
I'll try to check in from time to time. Good luck on finding those fatties.

If anyone wants to go to the maple tonight I should be there by 10:30 or 11:00 let me know figure I'll start at Blair Rd and if I don't get anything there maybe go to Dexters or Maple Rd., I'm not one for plans or organization! :). Maybe this should be under the super short notice trips. :D

Doesn't Ohio State Michigan have to be in November? Do they even have catfish in Michigan? I know there might be channel and mud cats as they are bottom feeders and like things that stink.... Oh yeah, that's why you are coming to Ohio, for the King of all Cats, the mighty shovelhead. Sounds like fun, hope I can make it, us tree huggers gotta stick together, even if you are from up there.

Vic about a trip to Belleville Lake when was you thinking how long? I have been looking at some maps of the lake it looks like its got some good structure and the creek channel. I would like to give that a try to with the boat and the fish finder and the gps it should be a real good trip is there any place to set up camp let me now i have got the itch bad got to get rid of this skunk that sal passed on to me at the bay! I sure would like to give it back!!! Built me a new portable bait tank! boat is ready! I am ready! :D as far as the flatties I would like to try that to!

Then let's do it!!!!! What are we waiting for? LOL. This is in my backyard (I live 20 plus miles from the lake) and I'm saying that we WILL catch some catfish in a boat on Belleville Lake. Scouted the place out today, and the shad are running in my favorite bank fishing hole. That means catfish bites, and I got quite a few of them today, but the bite was light. I arrived at the spot a little later than I would of liked, which was around 7 a.m. If we do the schedule that we had in Saginaw Bay by launching at dusk we should limit out before 2 a.m. That's twenty channels that weigh no less than 3 pounds apiece!!!! Now of course that scenario only exists if they're biting! What I am going to do is test my theory from the bank again at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. If I'm right on my assumption with the shad, I should get into some good fish from the bank. I will post photos tommorrow if I'm successful. I DON'T CONTROL MOTHER NATURE, BUT YOU WILL NOT GET SKUNKED, UNLESS YOU'RE FISHING WITH BARE HOOKS. LOL. Shrimp is the ticket, and right now I'm fishing with tiger prawns.
There is a boat launch that's FREE(you know this is an urban area, not too many freebies here) that's right on the lake. As for campgrounds, there is supposedly a KOA campground that is 4 miles from the lake. I'll investigate the situation and give everyone a good heads up, and believe me I'm not going to give the go ahead if it's not a respectable area. I still have some of that firewood from the Saginaw trip, but ANYBODY is welcome to bring more.
In all honesty though, I want to get into some flatheads in Ohio, but if that don't work out for what ever reason let's do Belleville. Now the only thing is to settle on a date. I realize you're a big time salmon guy, so I'd like to do it before that show rolls into town. LOL. Give me some suggestions and I'll go over the scenario with my wife. Seeing that I'm close to home, I'm pretty sure that I can work around your schedule.
Now what we could do is double dip it and do one night in Ohio on the Maumeee and do one night in Michigan on Belleville Lake or the Raisin River as I originally suggested. As a matter of fact :0a1: :0a1: let's see how game the Ohio brothers really are in getting this thing done on short notice...get back with you guys tommorrow....if they're scared I'll know real soon.LOL.
The reason I suggest the Maumee and Raisin is because they're roughly an equal distance from the border...

Hey guys this is a post I made in the Ohio section:
Give me some ideas. I wouldn't want to go off on this thing half cocked. The reason I suggested the Maumee out of Toledo and the Raisin River from Monroe is proximity to the border. The Raisin is roughly 15 miles from the border and holds a good stock of channel catfish. I'm sure neither one of us want to go too deep in the other state. Might just go native if you're not careful.LOL. Seriously though, is anybody familiar with Toledo in the way of a campground to spend the night? What I'm thinking is spending Friday night/early Saturday morning on the Maumee and then Saturday night/Sunday morning on the Raisin? We also know the Maumee holds flatheads, which Don and I would like to get a hold of before the year is out. I don't know how far you guys are from Toledo, but if Sal and Don were to make the trip they would be driving a much greater distance than me. I could probably get to Toledo in roughly an hour. It was just something I was thinking about on short notice, since Don is planning to fish with me soon. Oh, the other thing is that a boat is essential. Sal has a boat and Don has one. If we can't get it together because of logistics or scheduling on short notice we can postpone it to next year, but who knows what's going to happen next year? LOL. Let's get it done this year if we can...
My feeling is it may be too difficult logistically to do the Ohio/Michigan double dip on short notice. It would be easy if Michigan was just involved to get a couple of people to fish together, we've done it already several times driving good distances across the state. I don't know the level of camaraderie those "other" guys have or if they really have fishing in their blood. LOL. We could get this thing done with a group effort. If you haven't figured it out by now, Don has expressed interest in bringing his boat to Belleville Lake and I expanded the idea to Ohio. If we don't include the Maumee I still think we're planning on doing Belleville Lake.
I spoke to one of the proprieters of Sandy's Marina and was informed that the catfishing was picking up considerably. Boaters are limiting out on catfish right now. I went out this morning as planned and got a couple of runs, but no fish. This is the time for channels though, because they sense the seasonal change and the dinner bell is ringing. Belleville is loaded with channel cats of all sizes, but 3 and 4 pounders are most common. Again, the boat ramp is free 24/7 unless you wanted to put in at the Marina, but you'd have to be out of there by 10:00 p.m. and pay $10 to boot! Who wants to do that? LOL. The free boat ramp is an old DNR site that's no longer manned, and alot of people put in there. It's been free now for at least a year based on my discovery of it last year. I know the lake doesn't get as much pressure on the catfish with most people fishing for other species.

Vic I think that we should plan for something next year maybe a combined Michigan/Ohio Gathering. Somewhere either on the River Im assuming that you can fish both sides with your state license not sure tho. That would be my suggestion. Altho now that all my weekends are free (for the most part) now I can pretty much go any weekend.

Guys it depends on my time and money- A lot of these upcoming weekends are already dedicated and I promised jross that I'd hit the k-zoo with him as well... not to mention the salmon run coming up that I need to hit to stock my freezer.
Hammer out a date. If I can go you bet i will be there with a fat hunk of something for the campfire and a big ole grin.

Vic with these gas prices this trip might have to be postponed it's 3.29 a gallon here now and there talking 4.00 a gallon by the saturday I can't justify spending that kind of money on a fishing trip just for gas! If gas get's back to some kind of reasonable level! We will go!!!! SORRY MY FRIEND!

If I feel alright I might hit it this thursday for muskies for a few hours if it is good weather. If I dont feel good, I am gonna curl in a ball and hide. Ill letcha know- but the likelihood is that I will be good to go.
If you dont have anything going on thursday I'll take ya with me.... the truck leaves the driveway at 2pm. Let me know.
Actually, if you arent able to go, post it and I will open it up for anyone here. I can take one partner, and it is musky time on Lake Ovid. If they arent hitting or we run out of gas I will bring some shrimps for big kitties under the dam.

I got a doc's appointment at noon and Im gonna take my tractor in to the JD shop after I get back for its yearly physical (turn your blade and cough).
I may end up going to rainbow lake for crappies and cats instead. The lake's closer to me by 20 minutes and it is a private, members only lake, which I just got membership to. Can you say lakebound flatties? YEAAAAAH BAYBEE!
Anyhow.... maybe another time man. Lemme know when the salmon show up at the dam- I'd like to pop down and yank a few lips this fall.

Man, you can certainly tell when the catfishing ends in this state!!!ROTFLOL!!! (You can feel the tumbleweeds blowing and I think I see a fossilized critter in the distance) Anyways....
Hey, just wanted to let you guys know there is a fishing trip that we just came up with that's going on October 28th - 30th on the south side of the Ohio River in the vicinity of Henderson, KY. I know no one wants to go, so I'm not going to pull your leg this time. LOL. Also I'm not going to hype up the trip by telling you all the big fish I'm going to catch. LOL. We know what happened the last time I did that. LOL. I'm just going to drive down there and see what the good Lord is willing to give up...It's my last opportunity to get a flathead or a blue this year, so I'm hoping for the best...If by chance you might be interested check out the gathering section...it has some great info and good rates for camping...
Take care,
Vic Brown
