A newspaper article from down east somewhere or another said that the scales used to weigh the fish were 20 pounds off, do a gogle search on it and it came up for me last night. The guy's name was Kershaw I believe.

Mark J
09-20-2005, 10:13 AM
The classic foot on the scale trick? :D

fwmud
09-20-2005, 10:36 AM
Nope. no foot on the scale.
It was one of those scales that weighs with the increments;
"about" or "it was between".
ROFLAMO!

fwmud, Not real sure about that guy at riverside. that is the first timei have seen him in 5 years of fishing there. there was a crowd of guys in there wanting to know about what was caught and that was what he told. if it is the truth it sucks because we didn't catch it he also said that was the only cat that they cuaght sunday night. if that story was the truth great catch to the guys who got and NCWRC will let us know???? maybe

If it is true then you should see a write up in the Fayetteville Observer. I used to buy bait there but I found a better place that does not mark up the tackle and actually has a very good selection of catfish tackle. I am not sure what street it is on and it is hard to find. I think the name is Bayless Rod and Reel Repair or something to that nature.

i found this no.919 707 0220 it is one of the no. to NCWRC a lady named sara andrews said that the flathead record was broken 78lbs but all the paper work is being worked on again if this happens again call this no. then press 2 when prompted then press 1 when prompted..

While making my rounds in my patrol car there were two guys uset cause they couldnt get the wildlife officer out there to weigh it. It was huge!!! They had it in a LARGE live well on the boat. He wouldnt say where he caught it but that they were in the direction of lock 3. When asked it was by pole. The time I was with them was around 00:30. I made a statement about the BOC and one of them said he was a member, so maybe we all will get to see it. I keep a camera in my car, but it batts. were dead. This brings me to the question of at midnight were can people get fish weighed?

HEF.

ponykilr

well, they had it in a live well and as long as they keep fresh water circulating, they can get it weighed in the morning. a stout stringer would work too.

heres a "copy page" from Nc wildlife site. Haven't found a "afterhours number but will continue to look;

How to apply for a North Carolina State Fishing Record
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's Division of Inland Fisheries keeps lists of the largest common freshwater game fish caught by sporting methods in North Carolina waters. It keeps only all-tackle records. No line-class records are listed, nor does it keep records on all species of fish. It does not recognize fish that have been caught in nets or on set lines or trot lines nor fish that have been speared, snagged or shot. To qualify for state record recognition, a fish must have been caught on hook and line in a sporting manner.

In making application, the angler must provide the following information:

the common name of the fish,
its weight on certified scales,
its length from nose to tip of tail,
its girth,
the date caught,
the location of the catch,
the name and address of a witness to the weighing,
and the name and address of the angler.
If there is no witness to the catch, an affidavit as to the circumstances of the catch will be required.

Fish caught in joint waters—that is, bodies of water shared by adjacent states—must have been caught in the North Carolina portion of those waters.

The fish must be weighed on scales that have been certified as accurate by the NC Department of Agriculture. Such scales will bear a dated inspection certificate. Report that date as well as the location of the scales (name and address of the place of business.) Additional information may be required and must be provided if requested. The fish itself must be examined by a qualified expert. Fish should be frozen or otherwise preserved until identified. The Division of Inland Fisheries will arrange for a qualified expert to examine the fish. The above information must be given in written form and the angler must sign his name and provide a full side-view photo of the fish to:

preserved means alive will work too right? it is prolly gonna be hard to get a wildlife officer out in the middle of the night........unless you are looking at some deer with your headlights after hunting all afternoon and not seeing anything and there just happens to be a shotgun in the backseat.........never mind, no sense dwelling in the past. but i was just looking really, and they were out of buckshot range........ :crying:

Oh gracious, why that can of worms again??? Regardless, that is one massive fish but if I was honest with myself it really doesn't look like it could possibly be 27 pounds larger than the 51 lber. we caught 2 weeks ago. I can see the new record having 8 or 10 pounds on ours, but 27??? That a time and a half again 50. No way... Anybody else have the same opinion??? I've seen pics of some 60's that looked a whole lot bigger than that one. Anyways, it really doesn't matter cause next week we're going to break the #80 mark to set it all straight...lol I wish, huge fish though and congrats to him!!!

09-28-2005, 10:26 AM
Nice fish..........Being on certified scales, I'd say it's whatever they say it is. The one you all caught also looks huge.......too bad you didn't weigh it on the same scales :)

I think that record will stand a while.........hooking a giant like that is one thing.....landing one is another........

Looks like the NC Flathead fishery is alive and well. I used to think the worst thing to come back as in another life would be a shad that couldn't swim as fast as his friends...I'm gonna change that to being an Eel that can't pull the weight fast enough to keep a monster like that from chomping down on him.

I keep a 100 lb scale on the boat at all times, wondering if I may need to upgrade that after reading the story :)

Southernraised84
09-28-2005, 11:06 AM
All i can say its thats my river..well not mine but its the river i learned how to swim in and its the river i have fished my whole life and will fish tell the day i die.I went out last night caught some nice blues but nothing like that. And to be honest there is bigger fish in the cape then that recordim talking 100 pound + cats i will put my life on it.I love seeing big fish like that caught right around where i fish everyday makes me want to load up the boat and head on out there. If yall boys ever get a chance to come to NC FISH THE CAPE FEAR RIVER YOU WILL LOVE IT i promise that.

i ahve caught cats up to 58 before and larger ones only to lose them because of knot or some unforseen tackle problem but there are larger ones out there. and we fish for them all the time. all it is 10 % hard work 100% luck. just you being in right spot and him to eat your bait. good luck all and hope you do cach a big one.

09-28-2005, 01:36 PM
Well at least he wasn't using a zebco 202 with 8lb line or using a flyrod with 4lb line. Folks there's alot bigger flatheads then that out there. One day I'll prove it, See-ya.

JAYNC
09-28-2005, 03:09 PM
I think that flathead that just broke the record had a craving for all the lead I have lost in the river. You guys are right though, I have seen pictures of flatties that (weighed less) but looked bigger. I guess if it was certified then I guess it stands. I guess its kind of like the guy who had the channel cat record, until someone looked at the picture real good and realized it was a blue. Cant wait to get back to the river though. See you there.

Once his fish was weighed on certified scales and verified by N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Biologist Keith Ashley, Newberger released it unharmed back into the Cape Fear River shortly after 10 a.m., nearly 11 hours after it first hit the eel.

i know what ya all are saying. it don't look as big as the weight but it was verified by a state bioligest.

sorry dihard just trying to figure him out. lol.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- A Fayetteville has caught the biggest catfish on record in North Carolina: 78 pounds, 52 inches long, and 3 feet around.

Brian Newberger, a lifelong fisherman, motored his 20-foot pontoon boat to a spot on the Cape Fear River near Fayetteville after midnight on Sept. 17. He was certain giant catfish fed there. Newberger cut a live, 14-inch eel so it would bleed and attached it to his hook.

The big flathead catfish took the bait, fighting Newberger for 40 minutes before he could haul it aboard.

"They're like a bull in the water," he said.

Newberger, who works by day as a trailer company shop foreman, knew right away his catch beat the 69-pound state title catfish caught in the Cape Fear in 1994.

He kept his fish alive in a custom-made tank inside his boat until he could place it on state-certified scales. After a N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission biologist confirmed its weight and girth, Newberger released the fish back into the river later that morning.

"I put all my fish back," said Newberger, 45. "That's one of God's creations."

cat4...whatever,
i dont hunt deer for trophies either. i shoot does and eat them as there are so many it actually hurts the population. i have actually never shot a buck, and have passed on the chance many times. a buck is just so beautiful and graceful, and makes me more aware of God and his creation(just like a big fish) that i just leave em be. just like i only keep smaller fish that are not anything special to eat, i only take the "lesser" deer.

i wasnt joking about the deer in the way you imply. you obviously still have some anger about the subject. i was joking about the humor of being in the woods all day and not seeing a deer, then seeing some once i got in my truck illuminated in my headlights and being pulled over and scolded by a game warden.

at least the fellow who caught the new record has the same feelings on the subject.
please let it go people, you are not changing my mind and i guess you fellas have your mind made up too. give it a rest. :thumbdown

Pony, am I reading this right? They no longer kill it to certify the record?
If this is correct well then fantasic!
The rules are always kinda fuzzy in state sites.

Mark J
09-29-2005, 08:42 AM
Keith depends entirely on the biologist and when it is caught.
Go catch a record in Bobpaul's backyard on a saturday night.
You got 3 choices until Monday or Tuesday rolls around.
Release it, kill it, or tank it.

Being this fella is in that Fayetteville catfish club I imagine they have had a speaker or two such as state biologists. I would say he was well prepared and knew exactly who to contact.
I should be that prepared myself.

bluecat69
09-29-2005, 10:49 AM
Mark,
You are correct in saying that. I am in that catfish club also and we have all the contact numbers for any type of emergency or situation that might arise. I know this guys personnaly and he is die hard catman, goes out Friday night and comes back in Sunday night.
That was one heck of a fish and I would not doubt it if we see his name in the papers again.

This is what it says about certing a fish on NC's website......

To qualify for a state record, anglers must have caught their fish on a hook and line, must have their fish weighed on a certified scale witnessed by one observer, have the fish positively identified by a qualified expert from the Wildlife Commission and submit an application with a full, side-view photo of the fish. For a list of all freshwater fish state records in North Carolina, visit the Freshwater Fishing Records page.
