Well we had a pretty good weekend. My Wife and I left real early Friday morning to Mendota. Fished for a few hours and then left for Los Banos. We fished the Highline Canal man was it windy. Then we tried the Wildlife Preserve. We caught a heck of a lot of Catfish and Stripers but they were all of the small variety, except for the one huge Carp I caught.

What bait did you catch that carp on?

Well it was certainly nice to have a few days off. Though I tend to work harder at home then I do at work. Allen and I had a good fishing evening on Saturday. I lost count of the Bass and Bluegill and also managed to catch two cats later in the evening. The rattlesnake made it interesting! It looks like Robb managed to bring in a good cat! Way to go! I look forward to being able to one catching a 20+. Well I hope everyone had a great holiday.

It was great. I worked while the inlaws came to visit and then went fishing for a while and caught a few fish.

I didnt have a long weekend. I had a short weekend followed by work on the 3rd, followed by yesterday off, which really didnt seem like an off-day since I did a TON of work round the home.

The wife and I disappeared into the woods in northern Michigan- Literally. 8.5 miles of dirt road followed by 2 miles of two-track in the woods. Stayed at a buddy's hunting lodge and drank margaritas. A very welcomed day and a half of rest.

Yesterday I got started at 5:45 am building my porch-deck that I've been planning for a year. I began last fall ordering cedar trees from an amish lumberyard. I got all of my wood very green and rough cut. Over the winter I hand-planed, then rounded the edges and sanded all of the wood except the wrap for the outside. I also pre-stained everything in March. Last week I did all of the underlayment work in treated lumber so the finish stuff will last a good 20 years if treated right.
I wrapped my whole porch in cedar wood inside, put down the deck, then wrapped the base and deck of the porch in cedar and even had a good 3 hour battle with a hammer and chisel to make some of the finer points sit "just right". Finally as the day wore off, I completely cleaned up and I stained wherever I cut.

Just after dark last night I set the stain brush in the trash, sealed the can, and sat down on my new porch for a big steaming mug of green tea with spearmint leaves in it, and watched the last fleeting puffs of fireworks over the distant trees.

I am still pooped, but brothers and sisters, I have the best handmade porch in the world!!!

I cant wait till my wife gats home from her mom's... she has no clue what she's gonna see.:cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2:

If I get a chance, Im gonna take a few pics if my camera has film in it and post em soon.

Spare time? Whats that? Is that the few minutes in between hammer swings where I poured myself some iced tea or the time spent drinking it?

I also smoked up some ribs and vacuum sealed them for our upcoming short-notice Michigan Gathering. I did one half slab of KC Masterpiece, a half slab of Sweet Baby Ray's, One half Red Pepper and Maple, and one half just dry rubbed.

So I guess I did do a lil bit of stuff in my spare time yesterday.
Ill have to take some pics of the deck. Ill also include pics of the shutters, and flower boxes I did last year, and the garage from the summer before. I may not be a pro, but I sure love to tinker. The wood does all the beauty stuff itself.... as anyone who does any of that would tell ya.

Well another weekend has past. Any good fishing stories? As for me I did not make it out for any fishing this weekend. Mostly work around the house. The only excitement was the UFC fight at a friends house. It was dissappointing. Ortiz made a joke out of Shamrock again. The main event between the big guy and the Russian was a boxing match and went five rounds. Of course I don't know how the fighters could hear through the "Boos". First bout was pretty bloody and some ofthe others were pretty but if you paid just so you could watch the Ortiz/ Shamrock fight you might see if there is a chance for a refund.

Friday I went to hooters with afriend before he flew out on a business trip. Saturday I had a fishing tournament. Sunday I smoked a Boston butt, two slabs of ribs and fixed a beer can chicken and had all the family over for my daughter. The guy she married is home on leave from Korea and they came into town.

For me it's been bad news and good news. My wife spent 3 days in the hospital- possible stroke. Turns out it was dehydration and 80% blockage of a carotid artery. Now she is home, doing fine. My van had quit running so I was driving my race car with no AC in the heat. Had to drop the gas tank to get to the fuel pump. Found the bad electrical connection at the pump and got it running this morning without spending $200 for a new pump. Now I'm ready for some catfishin'.

You have got that right! Every once in a while I may get in the same mood where I don't feel like doing much. But then when I am back at work I can't help but think I should have took some time to fish or do something. I am currently fishing late at night or early in the morning to beat the heat. I have noticed the night bite for me is very slow but early morning it is nice. Is anyone else noticing the same thing? I am wondering if the heat has something to do with it! Black Butte is a pretty shallow lake.

I have'nt been for a couple of weeks, and probably be another week before I fish again! Besides it's too hot! I have found that when night fishing, often the bite comes on briefly and a may catch a few bigger fish but it's not a constant bite, like it often is during the day. At least for me, that's the way it seems! I dont know about when it's 105 cause I try to stay in when it's that hot!

Well I left the house last night around ten. My wife was not feeling well and I didn't want to leave until she was sleeping in case she needed anything. We fished until 230 am and caught 6 small cats. Nothing to bragg about but the bites were steady. I am at work today and then its off to the races for the summer cross and freestyle in Red Bluff. On Sunday I will be taking my son riding as he has been asking to go for awhile. So the fishing is done for this weekend but it will be a nice weekend just the same. I hope everyone gets a chance to get some recreation in this weekend and look forward to hearing about it.

I can't complain about my weekend!

Tatersalad, a friend I met here on the BOC, fished a tournament with me on Friday night at Lake Wylie, SC and we eneded up winning with 19 pounds 11 ounces for the three fish limit.

That was a good start.

We went out again this morning and caught 15 channels between 6:00am and 11:00am, including a nice 7 1/2 pounder.

So, I can't really complain about my weekend!!

I stayed home, did yardwork. The river is too low to safely run, but we just started to get some evening showers. If it will only rain enough above us to get a little rise going. If it don't, I will have to be fishing tidewater in these parts. Oh yea, had a good game of pool ball with my kids, and swam to cool off. This time of year is where you remember why you got a pool, and pay for all the upkeep. Good fishin', Jack.

Well it sounds like everyone had a good time this weekend despite the nasty heat we are having. The good news is we are on a cooling trend up here. It is supposed to be 108 today instead of 113. The races were great there were some good riders out there making it worthwhile. But Metsker's team was amazing with their freestyle performance. Unfortunatley Mike was not riding due to some injuries but no matter because his crew was amazing. They were pulling of backflips with no hands and everything in between. They put on a good show! My boys were very excited to say the least. I think they may want to trade in the quads for dirt bikes. Yeah right! Didn't make it out riding Sunday it was just to hot to be any fun. Woke up to temps at the 80 mark around 6 am amd said no way! My oldest son would have went no matter what but it is not safe to ride in full gear with those temps! Looking forward to hearing from the rest of you! Any good stories?

A buddy of mine went with me to the slough, were we met up with Scott and Pete. When were unloading my truck to put it in the boat I noticed my tackle box is missing:ooooh: :ooooh: I looked for it and determined I left it home:angry: This means no bells, trebbles, almost everything. Anyway, loaded the boat up and went across the river from the pipe there at Mendota Slough. After throwing a fit a bullying up for an hour, I found a few swivels and took off a few trebbles of a few older lures I had found before at other fishing trips. What saved me was my "stink bait pack". I use my ugly stick tackle box I got free . Its perfect for 6-8 tubs of various stink baits and other dip bait stuff. Well I been finding different stuff when out fishing and I been throwing it in the stink bait box. When waiting for bites, I am always looking around and at docks and stuff. Had a lot of stuff I had found:wink: So I knew I was set to do some catfishing:big_smile: No bells hurt though:sad2: Threw my first line in the lil canal I fish around 9 pm Friday. First fish on was a 2# Pete caught on lver. He fished the river. If you have bells, you can fish the river and the canal too. Finally after missing 2 HUGE runs (my bait runner was getting a work out) I snatched my 9 ft. ugly stick up and pulled in a 3#. OK, I am happy now:smile2: Then the pump turned on and the fishing stopped. Caught a few stripes around 3 am then got some sleep. Overcast evening skies broke a light shower thats was very refreshing. Not wet, just right at 5 AM and the the ba$$ were up in the canal shomping on shad. Scott landed a nice 7 1/2 # black bass and Pete took a 6# on liver:confused2: I got a 5# channel on DK's. No hits on Sonny's or wicked sticky. All about the Dk's and liver again. Couldn't dial in on the cat's with the crappie and ba$$ action. It was just to darn hot! The best moment came when I took 2 bass off DK's:tounge_out: All bass were taken on liver or DKs and trebbles while reeling in ti rebait:smile2: Left at 11: Sat due to an engagement I had to make.

Of course my fishing buddy out fished me in size and numbers but I was glad I put something on the board. It was a good time, big salmon splashing all over the place and some nice hook ups. We filleted them out and have some great meat at home. We didn't bring a scale but the biggest was around 30lb or so. I am attaching some pictures. It was good eating Saturday night. My wife was all smiles when I grilled up some salmon Saturday! I hope everyone had a good time this weekend!

Sorry your hurting Mutt , Bert too and others here who were close to Phil, the situation really sucks.

This brings life into perspective, sometimes we have to be shaken awake.

Thing you guys who were close to him can do is not mourn so much as remember the life he had and how much he loved doing the things that made him and others around him happy.

I lost a brother(very cloes friend) about 10 years ago, closest person i've had in my life just about and it brought me down hard but the one thing that put a smile on my face when I mourned lossing him was the memory of his laugh, the guy had a laugh and a love for life that was just extraordinary and it was a privledge to have been his friend.

Phil was extraordinary guys, I know he was without really even knowing him.

I am sorry to hear of the loss. I only knew Phil from the posts that I read around the BOC but I go the sense that he was a good person! We have been blessed with the ability to remember vivid details about people. The pain of loss heals over time and fads into fond memories of people we care about. So with that said I raise my glass to Phil and hope that everyone he touched has taken something special with them. God bless his family and friends!

Welcome manuel to the BOC! I am in Fresno. Hope to hook up with you and wet a line. Make your self at home and enjoy the sight.

Yeah we just might cross lines one of these days. My Wife and I fish Mendota a few times a year. So if you see a big dude sitting in the shade of a grey Chrysler Van rear hatch...Thats Me!

Hello, Hope everyone had a good weekend I know I did. A couple of friends of mine and I fished the corcoran area Fri. night with no luck at all so we packed up and headed a little south to Alpaugh and fished the Homeland Canal. By 4 in the morning we each had a few keepers around the 3 to 3 1/2 pound range. BTW is Danny King's available here locally?

Well it has been a littel while since I have posted it has been very busy. I opened Dove season with OK shooting but it hass been a tough year for Dove so far. My Gray lodge deer hunt opens up next weekend so I have been trying to get some scouting in to make the opener a success. The weather has been great. I am hoping for a little rain to make some nice fresh tracks. As far as fishing goes I caught a 45lb Salmon on Labor day at the feather. It was a great day. My fishing partner was gone so I was on my own. I fought him for 40 minutes until he was tired enough I could net him myself. It is a hike to get back to the vehicle from the spot but man is it worth it. Nice fresh salmon is the best:big_smile: My wife was happy and the kids are old enough to get excited when they see a nice big fish. I hope everyone is having a good time!

Man... you're making me homesick for that area! It's nice getting to meet and fish with more members down here, but I REALLY miss my sweet spots on Black Bute Lake up there. This is the time of year when the big ones are around the bend from broken ankle ridge, just a bit further around than where we had that rattler encounter! Watch your step if you go check it out though. I nicknamed that place "broken ankle ridge" because of someone I took fishing out there who did just that trying to cross the rocks. I'm hoping to find some time to get up to Millerton Lake or down to Success Lake and find some new honey holes around here myself, but watching the kids is keeping me from getting a chance so far. I WAS loking forward to taking another crack at those salmon this year, but I guess that's out of the question now.

Ok Gray lodge was great. My son and I shot at a 4x4 on sunday. Knocked him down and spent a day and a half looking for him after he got up and disappeared in some tulies. He wasn't bleeding much so he will live for another season. Monday night I found a fence crossing and bedding area close together and sat on it but nothing showed up. There was plenty of fresh sign so the next morning I checked the bedding areas and was able to sneak in on a 3x2. We made eye contact he satrted to run I whistled and he gave me a broadside shot with my 12 Gauge. I sat for half an hour and tracked him down about 350 yards from where I shot him. That is one in the freezer. He field dressed at 140lb. I am currently stalking a large buck. He is in thick cover and I have not been able to check his rack but the area he is in is muddy. When he runs he sounds heavy and his track is one of the biggest i have seen in the area. I went salmon fishing yesterday and my fishing buddy smoked me he caught two nice salmon. One 30+ and the other around 25. I hooked into a dead one. The fish he caught still had nice meat but they are definately starting to turn in a bad way on the feather. It closes this weekend so we will have to switch to the Sac. Here is a picture of the 3x2. I have better ones on the 35mm but my buddy took this one with a digital after he was skinned. I tried to cover him up so noone is offended. I will be taking a weekend off from hunting to spend with the family but then I will be after that big buck again next weekend or possibly some evenings. Good luck to all!

Nice, Bro! Good luck on that biggun!! Wish I coulda stuck around up there and done some salmon fishing with you before we had to move down here. Becca is talking about going up there for a week around Thanksgiving, but nothing is set in stone yet. If we get up there maybe you and I could find some time out at Black Butte Lake again and hit the spot where I got all the bigger catfish last year around the bend from where we fished last time.

Hey David, You near Redding? My sister just bought a house on the Sacramento River there. Right off I5 . She says it is at Turtle Bay.

Thanks Allen. If you come up this way let me know. I am usually hunting during that time of year. Pheasant, quail and turkey are in season. But it never hurts to take a break from hunting to drag some cats out of the water. You have my number give me a call if you head up here.

Robb I am about 45 minutes south of Redding. There is some great fishing in Redding if you know where to go. Unfortunately I don't. If you come to visit your sister let me know. We can wet a line. We have great fishing and hunting availible in our area.

If you are headed for Redding, try Whiskeytown lake for bass, trout, and landlocked salmon, or Clear Creek at the top end of that lake, off Carr Powerhouse Road, for trout and salmon. The creek is "catch and release" territory unfortunately for those who like to keep their catch for the table. Also, Lake Shata is a favorite up there for deep water trolling for trout, as well as extremely large catfish near the dam. Of course, an hour South of Redding is Black Butte Lake 8 miles West of the I5, which is great for bass and catfish.

Damn I look scared chitless in this pic LOL I think he caught me when I was trying to adjust something, the damn back rest snap broke so I had to stay in a sitting position the whole time, unable to lean back and kickit, rough on the back just a bit.

The other is a fresh water otter that cruised right by slim within feet then up the bank into a cave in the rocks, he was about 4 feet long head to tail.

I was looking at doing some pig hunting at hollister hills down there. Does anyone have any experience with hogs there? Either sightings when using the area or time spent hunting there. There is a ranch that has a guide service close to there and I am wondering if it borders the BLM land. The ranch is called hogs wild ranch. Any help would be greatly appreciated I am in the process of planning my pig hunt and gathering information.

Wow what a great weekend! I was able to get a pig on saturday! Unfortunately my hunting buddy was up at eagle lake so I couldn't get any digital photos. Not a big pig but he will be good eating. I estimate his weight between 80 and 90lbs. But that will be good tasting fresh meat for the freezer. There was a group of them runnning in some thick brush and he was the only one that paused in the opening so he is the one I took. I went and bought another tag and will pursue some more pork for the freezer. I saw some does and a spike but didn't find any leagl bucks this weekend. My buddy's eagle lake trip was a success and they brought home some nice trout. He showed me some pictures of their trout and they were mostly 3lbs or better the biggest they caught was 3.7 lbs. I hope everyone had a good weekend. Robb how was the fishinig in youir area this weekend? Vini did you get to go?

Vini and I went and scoped out Millerton lake Saturday night but they close the gates at 6 PM and you have to be out by then on one side of the lake and on the other there is only a small stretch of shoreline where you are allowed to night fish, all along which it's really shallow and the drop off is so negligable that when you cast out as far as you can with a heavy rod and big weight you're probably no more than 9 or 10 feet deep. Vini paid a $7 admittance fee but we only stayed about 2 hours, hitting two spots along that stretch of shoreline with nothing but a couple nibbles on liver. We went from there to the bridge below the dam and got a few more bites but didn't hook anything in the hour we were there, then called an early night and split. I'm still trying to hunt down accessable waterways to fish without having to drive for an hour to get there though. Had a good time getting out of the house at least! :smile2:

Well this weeekend was another great weekend for me. I took a nice pig for the second straight weekend in a row. This one was between 280 and 300. The tusk measured three inches. All I can say is wow. My hunting partner and I were deer hunting again and it is a good thing I always carry a pig tag with me. This boar pushed out right in front of me and I hit him second shot on a full run just behind his shoulder with my over and under 20 gauge. As soon as I hit him he stopped and looked like he was going to charge me. I was out of shells and reaching for more. He changed his mind and ran into some thick stuff. It took two more slugs from my shotgun and one from my 9mm to end this chase. He was one tough customer. My hunting patner and I drug him 2 and 1/4 miles to the truck. It took 3 hours to field dress him and get him to the truck. He was at the butcher by 4pm and weighed in at 125 lb with everything off of him ready to cut up. He is one big pig. Fortunatley this time my buddy had a digital camera so I can share. I hope everyone else had a good weekend. I will attach some pictures.
