we were using fresh cut shad, use the head on one pole and the middle section on the other pole then throw the tail away. what i do is catch shad put them in baggies and put them on ice right away. you can do this with chubs and suckers also, the key is to make sure you keep them fresh. i have used frozen shad in the past, now that i use fresh shad my catch is 8 to1 over frozen shad.

no mike, i was still fishing i havn't got the drift fishing down yet on rivers. i need to work on that, i dont have a very good trolling motor on the boat and that plays a key role in drifting on rivers and the wind and current. you need to get over there some time, i have a ball on that river.

well dave i have a roller dam that i get my shad, they are stacked up reel close to dam in heavy current. just trhow the cast net and i got them, the bad thing is they wont be there all year long. so i head down to alittle lake here town but it is slim picking. when that dries up iam sol, i havn't figure out how to find them in the rivers yet. fresh chubs and suckers work good to so dont pass them up.

thank you very much for the response sir. i live close to a roller dam on the river and might have to go there. the access is in illinois to get real close to it. hope i dont get caught without an illinois license just to get some shad.

This time of year where ever the stripies are running you'll be able to net all kinds of shad ..... they'll also stack up on the inlets and outlets to sloughs at night, you come off the river up Credit Island slough at night, for most of the summer, you'll have them literally jumping in your boat ... heck you can get them right off the dock there most of the time, the street lights attract them .... when we go to the Cedar for a weekend I always go down on Thursday night, net a bunch and put them immediately on ice, as long as you keep them on ice or in the refrigerator they'll keep all weekend, much better than frozen which seem to be an open invitation to bait stealers
I still have problem finding them early in the year but after mid-May it's seldom a problem, which is why I like to put in there and fish that part of the river just downstream from the Rock River ... there is some interesting natural, man-altered and manmade rock structure there and I learned a lot about 'fishing rock' in that little section of the river
