View Full Version : Losing my finger

For the last 36 hours I've been out cold while in and out of the operating room. I was volunteering at my old high school's gym, rebuilding all their exercise bikes, when my hand got run through between a sprocket and chain. I lost alot of blood but I made to the hospital where they said I'd lose my right index finger. After someone sent my pulverized hand's x-rays around the state, a doctor in Scottsdale said he wanted to try and save my finger. I was Med-Trans to their operating room. Today, I'm home after 2.5 hours of surgery, with 5 pins haning from one finger. No one knows if I'll keep it yet, but I have more surgery next week, and more a month after. Since I don't always have a friend to type for me like I do now, I dont think I'll be on the website much in the coming weeks/months. I'm kinda bummed that I will miss alot of fishing and chatting with all you guys. Good fishing, I'll be back in the swing of things as soon as I can.

Just have faith in what the Docs can repair now days. My hunting and fishing partner ran his left hand through a table saw blade and it was pretty much hamburger after it happened. It almost severed the thumb and got every finger but but his pinky. Today he has almost full use of his hand but there was some permanent damage but not that you can tell. So hang in there bro and I hope it works out for you. Keep us updated on your progress.

This is Mark, Tony's buddy. Tony is in a world of hurt today, as the anesthesia wore off. In my 9 years of knowing Tony, I've seen him get real messed up, but never seen him cry. When I left his house earlier, there were tears in his eyes, but he insisted it was not from pain, but from the enourmous support he saw you all show for him today. He was alone most of his ordeal because his dad is out of state for his job, and his mother left him years back. Showing him your prayer promises and well wishings put some real life back in him. You have been real brothers to him. Thanks to all, I will try and print your posts as often as I can.

p.s. When I ask him what I can get for him, he insists nothing. But maybe a left handed reel. haha

Mark

Damn!

To say that sucks doesn't do it justice.

Hope the docs have prescribed some heavy duty meds to ease the pain. Bone injuries, especially shattered ones are the most painful.

The bright side: Pain heals and chicks dig scars!!!

I appreciate you all making me feel better through all this. Currently I feel like I need to be in bed, these painkillers really knock me out, but iowe all you who care an update. Doctor says it was one of the worst crush injuries he has seen. Need a few weeks to see what my body will do with it, then one of three surgeries. If the bone and joint starts growing straight, 2-3 microsurgeries to try to make it work. If bone heals OK, they will fuse my finger's bones straight, so at least i'll have it. If the bone infection spreads preventing healing, they will still amputate. I dont know which ismore likely, they dont seem to want to say.

Through all this pain, i am humbled by what other people have gone through. i am young, but i undrstand alot people wish this is all that would of happened tothem. what i'm trying to say is, i have no complaints about what happened out of respect for veterans and anyone who has suffered through 100 times whst im going thru. but thanks toyou all.

I still dontthink ill be very active on the site for a while, this post is really hard to do, i feellike throwing up, ive been passed outthe last 4 days. i dream about fishing lol. i forgt what else i wanted to say...

Thanks for all your prayers, i am big on faith healing, you are all helping.

I can't even begin to explain to you all how much you've helped. I am assured that every day of progress is thanks to your support, and most of all, prayers. It was a terrible injury, but in the last 2 days, I've almost felt my usual self, minus a finger.

It ended up being a partial amputation and I didn't even know it under all the dressings my hand had. I especially feel better after todays doctor visit, because I'm finally on a road to recovery, not just waiting for another surgery. It seems as if I can keep all my right handed reels because what ended up happening was the removal of the distal (closest to tip) joint in my right index finger, fusing my finger solid. Overall, I guess I couldn't be happier with the results. Another surgery is on the schedule, but not for another year or so after all the physical therapy. The finger is still tore up something ugly, but it should heal in a couple of months.

As I've said before, I'd hate to sound whiny about anything that happened, I didn't post to complain, only to see what prayers could be offered to better the situation. Although to me it was somewhat serious, I have no dilusions that it was a "terrible" or "really bad" injury in relation to what some of you brothers may have experienced. My little taste of pain only solidifies me respect for those around me, and more importantly, you. Nevertheless, your endless kindness you extend to me, whether answering a fishing question or responding to this thread, is more than appreciated, it is valued. This community has done nothing but help, and that is something not found everywhere.

On a side note, my fishing trips look to be post-poned at for at least a couple of months. I'll be on and off the website regularly, hopefully as was once normal, but with more labored typing. I probably won't add any more "updates" on my condition, because it is stable now, and its just become a part of my everyday life. Thank You Brothers.

I feel great, but my finger is doing allright. It is mighty crooked, and I'm going to physical therapy ( I feel like an idiot going for just a finger) to start trying to get my joints moving. Trying to move a reconstructed finger is about as painful as I've ever imagined, but at least I'm trying. Prospects are that my finger will fuse together, but I'm ok with that. The rest of my hand is healing so fast it is crazy, its like my body has kicked into high gear, it is probably missing fishing as much as I am. No biking or fishing for a while longer, but I can't wait to get back out there. Thanks for asking, everyone.

Glad to hear you're coming along much better than the prospects could have been. Don't worry about PT, just do exactly what they tell you, religiously. I say this from experience of 4 knee surgeries (one complete knee reconstruction) and a broken vertebra. You'll get there, just give yourself some time.
