Hey Brothers,
We are cooking up another flathead hunt for Friday, July 7, near downtown Grand Rapids.
Easy to find, easy to launch, easy to fish.
PM me for details if interested. My boat is maxed out, though, so you will need yours.
Best,
Tony

Hey there Tony,

Don just got me on the Nextel a few minutes ago to mention that night.

The 6th is the day for the radiation treatment for my ma. If the doc says for all of us to stay away from her, then Ill surely pop out there for a night of fishing with Hear Kitty cause Im gonna need something to do. If the doc says however that she can have family near her, I surely want to be there to make sure that she is eating, and that she doesnt have anything to do, like cut her lawn or pull weeds. Its likely after that sort of stuff that she wont have much energy... so every bit I do for her helps, and seeing stuff done doesnt make her itch to go out and try to do it herself when she oughtta be in bed building inner strength for a big ole battle.

Ill update as the time gets nearer.

By golly I need to get my flatty quota for the year. Help me, oh Grand River Wizard! LOL

Sal-

Whatever you & yours decide is most appropriate at the time, is what you should do.
The door, as they say, is always open.
Shucks, the doc may tell you all to leave her alone and let her sleep. If not, there's always another trip.
Besides, my "Wizard" status is strictly day-to-day. I get skunked just as often as the next guy- so I have to fish more often to make up for it!
The more I fish, however, the luckier I get...

Guys, you're really helping out by just allowing me a place to vent the steam of the stress. I cant thank you enough!!!!

Geez it is difficult communicating on the BOC when all I have to work with is a family 150 miles away and a whole day to sit and dwell on the many reasons I dont want to be at work, but up there. Thank Goodness for you dudes... you're screwing the sanity back into my battle-twisted head.

OK...
I talked to the wife last night about the trip. She said "...that the July 6th appointment is merely a consultation for the radiation treatment... so there is no reason to waste a good night fishing on just a consultation."

God Bless her. lol. I think Im gonna renew my vows for just that value of understanding. My girl knows that I wear that ring and that it is all the more secure on my hand when its wrapped around a cork-butt and tickling the underside of a baitcaster. ROTFL

So I am ON for the trip.

She also said that mom was eating pancakes yesterday and went out and dropped a line in her backyard pond like I told her to (last week I bought her a catfishing rig and a box fulla sinkers and circle hooks for her recovery). I think things are looking a lot less grim. A lot less stressful, and the road to recovery is on a smooth run right now.

So who wants to go FEEEESHIN!?!?

Hey- I have a question: Is there a place for a bonfire/shore lunch afterwards? Can I bring the brats and the cook stand or what?

The more I think about it, the more I think perhaps we should hit at or near the spot we hit last time.
With all the rain in the forecast, the water should be up some, and we can "convoy" from the ramp to the destination to follow the river channel .
My oversize motor draws as much water as anybody's- so if I can get there, so can you.
If the bugs aren't too bad, we can climb ashore & cook food, unlike downtown.
So far I think JRoss, Sal Jr, hear_kitty, and myself are in- anyone else?

On a side note, tonight I'm building a baitwell: It's two plastic trash cans, one inside the other, big enough to fit my wire fish basket inside. Canned foam insulation to fill the void between the two containers, and a plywood top lined with Dow insul board. I'll attach a battery powered aerator to the outside, & drill a hole for the tubing. Ahhhh... LIVE live bait.

Tony: that night you spent fishing the deep hole, the water must have been pretty high. yesterday, i was using one rod with a 1 oz sinker and it never moved in the current. And i wasen't fishing directly down stream. i was fishing at about a 45 degree angle to the current. there was very little debris floating down the river. but like you said, you know that stretch of river, and i never saw it before yesterday. excitement must yield to knowledge and experience, if not, some bad S%#@ can happen.

One last thing......if there is an empty seat in a boat, for the trip, i volenteer to fill it, if any of you can live with the fact that i , too, may suffer the same curse as Vic. Well, i guess thats not quite true. at least he catches dogfish, i havent caught squat.

OK,
This is the official 7/7 Outing discussion thread, does that sound lucky, or what?
Its raining pretty good here in Grand Rapids right now (1PM 6/22) and there's more in the forecast, had some yesterday too.
Big, BIG storms passed by south of GR yesterday, dumping on the whole Grand River basin, so all that water is headed this way eventually.
River should be rising, and since it almost always rains on July 4th, things are shaping up pretty good.
Sorry, I don't have anyplace for folks to stay the night, but there's a campground 1/4 mile from the ramp.
Gotta run...

Hey,
Rain in the forecast for next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Saturday. That should raise the river a few inches.
Of course, I've met a few of you guys, and with 4 in one boat... well, let's just hope for several inches...
Then again, if this turns into an all-nighter, are you sure you wouldn't want two boats?

I'm taking my son out tonight or tomorrow night, and going solo July 3, I'll post reports if I do well, and tell whoppers if I don't!

Tony
(PS: over in the Flathead Discussion, there's a thread about fishing with 2#, 16" suckers & drum, now that's BIG bait!)

now that a seat is reserved in my name, i can plan on taking a vacation day from work on the 7th, and head to a pond north of town to catch as much bait as possible. hopefully i can get a few bullheads and specks too. my cooler/livewell seems to work just great. (yea sparky i know, just dont forget to put the battery pack on it ). glad you are going to be able to join us. looking forward to seeing you again too don. Now if we can just get Vic here.

Now Don, you wouldn't leave a pot-bellied middle aged guy in the river over a bad joke, would you?

I have found the best spot to gather bluegills, and it's right on the way from the East side of the state to the West side.
Big Pine Island Lake, just north of the town of Grattan on M-44 in NE Kent County.
The kids and I just got back with tomorrows bait, and we could not keep the hooks baited. Really nice launch ramp. Two bays on the south side of the lake just filled with 4-7" gills. I'll bet they could be caught off the boat dock too, if there wasn't a lot of traffic.

Anyway, I'll be "pre-fishing" & looking for new holes & wood tommorrow for the outing on the 7th. Hope y'all have good weekend and catch some fish!

Jspiel, I have a livewell that is compartmentalized and the aereator does the whole deal. We can keep the gills in one side and the multitude of huge flatheads in the other side. If you can try to bring a few gills for me, would ya? Ill try and get some too- maybe we will be all set with bait if we work together on it.

I like to be settled into a good spot at least an hour before dark, but it stays light so late these days, we have time to BBQ at the park where we launch the boats beforehand if anyone's interested. Makes it easier to sit for a while on a full stomach.
There's grilles & picnic tables...

I posted it already in another thread, but it seems like I am free to fish that weekend after all if I choose (that's a funny one). Anyway, if I can find some boat space I will be much obliged. Besides, I would hate to miss out on history being made, and believe me history will be made concerning our virgins, Sparky and Don! ROTFLOL!

Did we decide on any potential campsites? I really, truly don't want to drive back home until after daybreak on Saturday. That being said, will there be anyone that is interested in hanging tough through the wee hours of the morning? As a rule, beauty rest isn't going to do you guys any good anyway! You might as well stay up!   You don't want to miss out on the morning bite! I just want to be able to fish longer than the drive time if you know what I mean...

Vic,

Jspiel and I are going to be the only ones on my boat, now that sparky and Don will be taking Don's Boat.

I dont foresee a 34 degree night like we had last time and hard rain is about all that will keep me from trying to pull an all nighter, unless jspiel needs to g ashore early for one reason or another.

So what I am saying is, yeah, sure... you have a seat in a boat!

As for camping, I will likely yank all my gear into my truck and knock off for a few hours in my front seat, then head home and sleep like the dead.

dreamcatcher
06-26-2006, 12:45 PM
Thanks for the reservation. LOL. Hopefully, it won't be 34 degrees in the forecast. I'm not really concerned with the rain as long as it's warm. Glad to know that you are down with the all night action. I just don't want to drive four or five hours to only fish for that amount of time. I know I mentioned campsite, but if I'm fishing there won't be any camping! My bad...:beat_shot:

I do have a question for the local guys regarding where we will be fishing. Is it the upper Grand or the lower? The reason I'm asking is Dan told me that you could fish a slip bobber in the upper section because the current isn't as swift. I love presenting live baits in this manner if the conditions are right...

It's never hard to talk me into an all-nighter, I'm in.
The current plan is to fish the upper Grand, but nothing is carved in stone.
I'm going to do some scouting with the new sonar this weekend, and I may try to talk y'all into a different location- one that may work better for a fleet of boats (especially Sal's Ark).
We could switch to the 8th if that works better all around, too.
With enough weight, you could certainly fish a slip float. Sometimes I add a slip float when fishing a 3-way with the weight on the bottom to keep the bait from hiding in the debris, especially with suckers.
Don't forget there's another potential trip 8/18, and maybe the tournament in mid-July.

Don't forget there's another potential trip 8/18, and maybe the tournament in mid-July.

Chances are this is my last big trip of the summer, with the exception of maybe one run with the boat over to Quanacassee... or two.

I will sadly sit and watch the rest of the season, as I am already over my fishing budget. at a mile a gallon or worse, the Ark is a thirsty girl, and drinks my wallet under the table quite often.

Oh, and so far as I know looking at what my schedule for work will be like, on the 7th I will most likely be pulling into the Grand River by 7:30 at the latest.

I may get out early... If I do, figure me there around 6.

Of course as the week gets under way, I will have a clearer picture, but the standard is usually that I work till 5 on Fridays. That would gimme 30 minutes to get home, then another 30 to grab a muchie, hook up the boat, load the cooler, and be on my way on the 1.5 hour journey.

Maybe we should look for a shack on the river somewhere (or a cheap houseboat?), 'cause I might be in the same situation!
(I was just thinking, I need new anchor lines, better boat seats, another Garcia 7000, etc, etc, etc)

PS: Now that you mention it, my wife hasn't fixed me breakfast since the kids showed up 12 years ago... I used to find clean clothes folded in the drawers, then it was folded on the bed, now its a pile on the dresser, and I hate to think what's next!

At what point is it in a marriage that the dirty-socks-by-the-recliner removal faries, toilet paper changing faries, and clothes folding gnomes disappear? I'm heading to our 5th anniversary on the 28th of July.... and I fear the day they go on strike. Maybe with a heads-up I can plan an alternate means of handling the issue.

I can answer that one Sal. It usually comes after the children do. You haven't made that investment yet, But if you do, look out, the dirty socks will be left in the garage. If you don't have one, well it's hell to pay when winter comes to Michigan.

Aww damn! I should have told you to spray em with double-strength concentrated Round-up and let em bake in the sun for 6 weeks... THEN give em a carwash and a mild hydrochloric acid bath for 10 days. That ought to run of enough critters so its safe for the washing machine. Either that or stick em in a room for an hour with "Cher's Greatest Hits" on the CD palyer. Both work equally effectively at repelling any living creature.:tounge_out:

Hey,
The river level has been dropping a bit with all this dry weather, but there's rain in the forecast.
With any luck, enough rain will fall here and upstream to raise the river a little and perk up the feeding activity at the same time.
On the bright side, all this dry weather has slowed down mosquito production, so they may not be crashing the party too bad.
I'm taking my daughter out soon, so I'll get a chance to see the water levels first hand. She'll probably outfish me like my son did... (I wouldn't have it any other way).

Guys I've been a lurker since Y'All sound so knowledgable about the big cats and having grown up in IN and WI with a 30 year sojurn in the Navy my fishing has been pretty much whatever was there or "whatever noone else was fishing for" I've done a lot of nighttime fishing for Channel Cats in the Wisconsin River over the years below the Eau Pleine dam and such beauty of that was if a Channel didn't hit it was usually a Musky:-). We used 9" shiner or chub minnows there. Since I live by Richmond Park about a mile from the Ann Street park access ramps and am in the process of getting my boat licensed here in MI wshich by the way really is a pain at the Sec. of State. It's amazing that the folks there can't understand a 12'aluminum boat with a 6hp evenrude doesn't weigh 2401 lbs and might qualify for their slightly higher plate fee. So has been a 3 week study in frustration getting weights on all and such to "Qualify" for the under 2400 lb cutoff. My brother and law will be at the park for some bank fishing on friday evening so if that's where Y'all ar putting in hope to see you there and actually put some faces with posts. If not maybe next time. Where is the closest place to richmond park where a person can get a boat weighed? Any advice and such to a neophye flathead wannabe is helpfull. I just spent a week at Cataract Falls Leiber State Park in Indiana fishin for them with a buddy but the biggest I got was 17lbs and Y'All make that sound like bait. John Cable, GR

You could try scrap metal yards for getting your boat weighed, there's one on Alpine between Leonard & Ann St. right near the Crystal Flash, same side of the road.
Come on over & join us! I think the boats are all full, but if you have your own, get some bait & come along.

Thanks for the welcome aboard all. I'm still trying to get the boat licensed here....Not necessary for trailors in WI so it's been sitting for 2 years. I've got to go over the recommendations Y'All have posted on lines and weights and types and such. I always just used 20lb mono or spiderwire and BIG minnows before Y'All have this figured out like a science:big_smile:. I've been so busy over the last 3 as a Moderator on the Knifeforums I've just now found the "Vacation" and "Fun" forum. It's obviously been my loss. Hope to correct that. Thanks for the heads up on the scrap yard and such. If I can't get all ironed out by this friday will still try to shoot by and say Hi! That's about 6 or so miles from here ....I think. Otherwise Arie and I'll just fish at the Riverside park somewhere along the bank is there anything in close enough to cast to there??? I use 6500-C4's I was lucky enough to pick up a DZ at a gun and knife show last fall for $40 each:lol: I really want to know how everyone knots their braid and mono or mono and steel together. I've only ever used either the crimp fasteners or Blood Knots? And as I saw the recommendations on line weights and leaders is all over the place so oughta be fun....plus more goodies to play with. For braid or mono line to a hook, use the Uni-Knot.
Tying to swivels, with braid or mono, use the Palomar knot.
Google them and you'll find plenty of instructions, even animated videos.
Two knots. Done. All you need.

Welcome to the BOC John!!! Don't be a lurker no longer! I encourage you to get your feet wet immediately with the entire site. There are some great folks that are willing to share information, but there is also a wealth of information in the BOC library that may save you some time. I am not sure what the stipulations are for new members to access that area (I know you need ten posts under your belt to access photos). At any rate, we have a great bunch of guys here in Michigan that are willing to help you get started.

And I thought I was the only one with too much time on his hands....

No really, good thing to prepare so as not to duplicate stuff.

Lol Tony....
Thast still a nicer thing to read than what jspiel wrote in email to me about bringing shorts- something about pasty white toothpick legs looking like glow sticks to call in the "skeeters".

Hey Sal,
I know this is a stupid question, but do you have enough PFD's on that Big boat of yours? I'm not trying to polk fun or anything, but when Steve (I mean whats his name) and I were on your smaller boat, the DNR had some questions about the number of people on your craft, and the number of PFD's you had. I hope when you bought this new addition to the larger trailer you are now hauling, it came equipt with enough PFD's LMAO
See you Friday Night!

Hey guys it looks like I am going to be able to fish Friday night, but probably won't be able to get away until midnight or so. I plan to fish from 1:00am until 8:00am. I'll be fishing on the lower Grand. Are you guys still launching from West River Drive?
