My first large flathead was 44lb.It's the one I'm most proud of.It was Dec,3rd four years ago at 9 A.M..I was fishing from my boat at the jucntion of a creek ditch and the main river channel. The water temp was in the low,low 50's and the depth was 33' dropping off into the main channel of 47'.I was using cut herring. The water was nice and calm with no boat traffic.I had caught 2 or 3 nice fish earlier and then I moved to the spot I caught this fish, baited 6 rigs and sit down and looked at the rods in the rear of the boat and one was going down.Landed the fish, pulled in the other rigs, lifted the anchors and went to the store above the house to get someone to photo me with the fish.As soon as I got the photos I went to another landing and released the fish.My largest fish is a 47.8 flathead I caught in the canal at Santee Cooper. It was great ,but nothing as exciting as the first. The photo's are in my gallery listed as 44lber and 47.8 lber

I only recently started fishing for catfish. The largest to date was caught last Saturday Sep 10. I caught a 20 pound Blue and was using hot dogs for bait. I would never of tried hot dogs if it was not for the BOC and many that suggested. I cut several hotdogs into bait size pieces and added powered garlic. Several days later I took the *bait* out of the refrigerator and went fishing. The hotdogs out preformed the cured livers and the large blue took the bait :)
I had something on that I fought for about 5 minutes before he straightened the snap on the steel leader. I would have liked to get a look at the fish even if I could not boat the fish.
I forgot the camera so no record of the Blue (I CPR'ed - Well that is not correct, It was CR caught and released), but there is always next time. :D
From a boat on a limb line. Read my story in the memorial fishing adventures section.

My biggest so far is a 12lb. blue caught in a tail race behind a dam. I walked, fell, swam, to an "island" in the middle of the race about 50yds. from the dam. Not much chance of rising water without heavy rains so I felt fearly safe. I threw out a 6in. shad freshly caught in a cast net. I think he hit it on the way down as I had just wedged the rod between a couple rocks and there he was.

I've only been catfishing for a couple months now. I started when I got tired of not catching much during the heat of the day and decided to try going out at night for cats instead. I don't have a boat yet, so I only fish from the bank. I've caught a LOT of 6-8 inch babies on liver, but I've pulled out a handfull of 1-3 pounders on liver and cut bait, a 5 pounder off liver, and the other night I pulled a 7 pounder out of Black Butte Lake using a 6 inch baitfish whole on a long shank hook. That was sweet, but I can't wait to catch something in the double digits!! My buddies and I tried the Sacramento River last week, off the bank where the water curls back and runs the wrong way into a spot with a fallen tree in it, but we didn't get a single bite all night. I was sure there'd be some action there, but nothing. There was a pair of socks and a nice rod and reel laying on the bank that no one ever came back for, and we were there from before dusk until well after dawn, so maybe the "big'un" WAS in there somplace after all and he'd already eaten.....?
On that note, a friend from work told me about a buddy of his who scuba dives... The guy went diving below the damn at Shasta Lake and saw a catfish big enough to eat HIM!! Scared him so bad he got out of the water fast as he could and refuses to dive there anymore. I'd sure like to get a boat and drop a line in THAT hole!! :)

Nice!
All my big fish have been caught while bank fishing. This summer I have caught 5 flatheads ranging in size from 40 to 45lb. All were caught in a lake, water depth from 10 to 15ft deep. Three were caught on live Bluegill, one on live Bullhead, and one on cut skipjack.

I caught the 52lber in my avatar in the Eagle Creek Reservoir. I was fishing from the shore, casting across the main channel into the mouth of an inlet. The water was around 3ft deep. Most luck I have had for flatheads has been on live goldfish and live bluegill. I was using a three way rig with two hooks, one hook had a 4" live bluegill and the other had a garlic salt cured chicken liver, both hooks were 7/0 Laser Point circle hooks. I caught it on the chicken liver!
Also, most people around here can't believe there was a flathead of that size in the reservoir, it was by far the largest one ever caught in Eagle Creek. Just because you don't think there are any cats of size in a given body of water, doesn't mean that they are not in there some pace. Best of Luck!

My biggest is a fourty three and a half pound blue in my profile pic that I caught from the bank. I was fishing in a lake in Indiana. I caught it on one of my sun cured garlic chicken livers! I was only about four feet deep!! It was a wild fight and it was a monster  I have yet to hook into a flatty over twenty pounds, I got one about a month ago that was eighteen pounds and it was a lot of fun! I could only imagine if it was over fifty! Good Luck Fishin Brothers, and of course sisters too!!!

ELPHABA7 Dear the story goes...
It was a cool evening, March of '76 in Colorado Springs Colorado. My Brother and I were in the water up to our shoulders playing Marco Polo (in the outdoor pool at my apartment) and there she was, about a hundred and thirty pounds, 5ft 2 and the most beautiful pair of... almond shaped brown eyes I'd ever been given the pleasure to gaze upon. I new then that she was the keeper I'd been looking for, but she didn't agree. After a short fight (courtship) I reeled her in and I got the net (ring) Yep Mrs. Cataholic is the biggest cat I ever caught, I wouldn't trade her for all the Gold in Ft. Knox! :D

So far 14 1/2 pound Blue Catfish from Mt. Island Lake in North Carolina, and it is the one in the avatar. I was fishing with a friend Rodger Taylor, and he took me to some good places on the lake.
My biggest Channel Catfish is 7lb. 8oz., and my biggest flattie was 7lb. 2oz.
The lake I fish is not known for Flatheads, so I really got lucky on that one.

I know there is 5 cats in there. Cause I caught and release 5. Well I caught 3 one 8 one 15 and on 20. Nephew caught a 5 pounder and brother in law caught a pansized one. Ok So you said I need to catch what sized blue gill and what type of rig do I use I have been using one a # 4 hook and two splitshots 8 inches up and then a treble hook and a egg sinker. I caught them off nightcrawlers and one off a piece of bbq chicken. I have magic bait at house but that stinky crap only caught me one turtle.

my three largest flatheads were caught on the ohio river.... the first 25 lbs was caught from a boat in a 40 foot deep hole. the second not weighed was 49 inches long and caught from the bank in shallow water. the third was neither weighed or measured but was closer to the 49"er than the 25lder in size, and was caught in about 12 feet of water from the bank. all three were caught on slip rigs with live bluegill as bait..... and all three were released to fight again.

Hello,
Well a little over a month ago I caught my biggest flathead cat hear in Minnesota where I live. I was fishing from the bank on the Mississippi River for channel cats in less then 10 feet of water. I was useing a 6 ft medium light action rod with 10lb test mono and a #2 octupus circle hook baited with a 4inch shinner. It was late afternoon when I caught the flathead it weighed in at 45 lbs and measured 53 inches. This fish should have been the one that got away but the fish gods where on my side. I hope to upload the photo soon.
Take Care Everyone!

My biggest is the flathead in my avatar. I caught him about ten years ago in a little river called the Bourbous that you can wade across in many places., not much wider than most peoples living rooms. The same year I caught another that weighed just a couple pounds less than he did. The past seven years since I got a big enough boat I fish the Missouri River and can't get a fish over 25 lbs. go figure?

The biggest fish that I've caught was a 40# blue cat. I never got a photo of it on account of it was caught on a trotline that was ran too deep in hot deoxygebated water and it died.:sad2: However my avatar photo is of me and my fishin' buddy Tom (the bigger guy) holding some large blues. The biggest one was 35# the other ones are 25# and 22#. All three of these dandys were on one trotline simultaneously along with another 10 pounder. They were caught by sea at Mark Twain Lake.
