i think its the shinyness of the foil. ive caught channels on bare hooks before when settin out lines. i bet he is fishin in clear water with a current.

That's awesome - I'm gonna have to try that next time I go. What kind of conditions were you fishing in?

Visibily was about 2 feet in the lake on that trip. Fished at night.
There was no current but the wave action moves the floats which makes the bait dance in teh water.
I have never had the chance to fish it on a full moon night but I sure want to.
An old commercial fisherman taught me the technique. He told me the last year he fished, he caught 10,621 lbs from Okeechobee in south Florida.
Robert
Think I may try that one.

They must work like a spoon, the fish mistaken them for a small shad.

When I saw this thread I thought it was going to have something to do with cooking catfish on a grill. LOL
I don't think it would work for me in the murky water I fish, but if it works for you I see no reason to stop doing it.

Here is what I think... the aluminum foil is a good electricity conductor... perhaps some of the catfishes sensory organs pick up on it and they think its something alive... who the heck knows.
I must admit, I'm gonna have to try this myself on some trot lines and see what happens.

For those of you who have never seen one, the boxes in the last picture are called 'jump boxes', and provide a very speedy method of putting out a trotline.

I have caught plenty of channels on empty, silver hooks. I used to wade the lakes/rivers and set my lines. Ist trip was to stretch the main line, second trip hung the hooks and third trip was the bait trip. Many times I had fish on the line before I could put the bait on the hooks. To this day, I use the bright, shinny silver/stainless steel hooks on trotlines and jub lines. Anything to help the situation.

Wow, that's one of the craziest methods for catfishing I've ever seen. I wonder if spraying some of that artificial scent stuff on it would help increase its success rate.

Jtrew, I was wondering if anyone was going to notice the jump box. Thats a neat deal, Im afraid i would end up with about 150 hooks in me. LOL. Nice box. As for the tin foil, Dang those cats are hungry. but im sure the shine, and movement replecates a shad, purty dang smart if you ask me. Ever have to rebait those Robert??? LOL Cost effective for sure......... Mac

some use a rig like that at eufala, esp. in clear water with a current

That's pretty darn neat! I've never goten into fishing with anything but a rod and reel myself, and all I do is catch and release since we can't eat what comes out of the lake up here. I don't know if that method is even legal in California.
I've seen shows on TV about sharks and how they lose sight ofthe bait and often change course and wind up biting the nearest metal object due to something about the electrical field in the water throwing off their extra senses. Likely something to that theory about the cats and the tinfoil too. If you're fishing this way in clear water I'd imagine the shine is what gets their attention first though.

I rebait every year because the foil loses its shine. The are always some bait blown off on the way to the lake and some lost in fishing.
So I keep a zip-loc bag of "bait" handy to rebait.

I've done the same thing on juglines before. We took those shiny silver mylar balloons and cut them into 1 x 3 inch strips. We did this during the prespawn when they seem to hit everything and did real well. I've also have two hooks on each of my juglines and if I'm short on bait I'll only bait one hook. I can't remember how many times I've caught fish on both hooks and one didn't have any bait at all. I think after one it caught and they see other fish spinning around and struggling they think it's a feeding frenzy. They see something shiny and bite it thinking it's just another shad.

After one fish is caught, it fights the line which makes the hooks close to the fish go wild. I assume the irratic action of the foil strips triggers the bite.
Usually catch fish in groups 2 or 3 in a line. Mr. Otto, the gentelman that taught me, says to set the line then go home. But, I run the line about every hour. Don't like to leave it un attended.
There are a couple of posts about jump boxes in the tips area.

I am going to try medal foil, next time I jug fish.

well if you really think about it if you put a piece of tin foil in your mouth and you get very distinct taste and catfish seem to like things that taste different so i think the taste of the foil helps as well as a shinny small piece that resembles a small shad

When my son was 5 or 6 yrs old at the cabin he didn't want to hurt the worms. so he took some used foil from the charcoal grill and put it on his hook. I didn't notice until he came to me and ask me to take this fish off his line . it was a 10in bullhead. Before you start on me , we hadn't used the grill that day.

I know tin foil works very well on the pressure plate of a steel trap for coons , the moonlight shinning on it is a real attractant. I bet the same is true for the cats .........im gonna give it a try !

I usually add a minnow to the jigs on my trolling rigs. Metalfish told me he's caught a bunch of different kinds of fish on them. I'll try it to see how the crappie go for it. We'll be going saturday morning. Should be able to give a report that evening.

What method did you use putting the foil on the hook?
Did you spread it out or just closely wrap it on the hook?
This i got to try, thanks.

The type of foil is very rigid.
Get an oven liner pan. It is about 20" square. Use scissors and cut it into strips about 1 1/4 inch wide.
Then cut those strips into smaller strips about 1/4" or more wide. You end up with a strip that is somewhere around and inch long and 1/4 wide.
Fold the strip like the number 7 and push the hook through the crease.
The end.

Hello,
Maynard, go to the top and view the Bait.jpb picture.
I am using a different hook now. The one in the picture is a #4 Mustad.
But, now I went to a #4 Mustad "Saltwater" which is about the same size but thick wire.
