Yep. Under the Route 22 bridge in Circleville, there are monster flatheads and some dude pulled out a 42 lb channel out of there a while ago. Also, if you are one of the few who like gar, the 104 bridge is awesome for those.
Take care. :)

A 42lb channel? Are you sure it was a channel? If so, that's 5lbs over state record.

I'm going to try for some flatheads this sunday. My step-dad works for the columbus wastewater treatment plant. He has told me that they always see big cats where the warm water discharge comes out of the plant. I was wondering if anyone could give some advice. I will try to buy some frozen shad from the bait store or maybe a frozen skipjack. I was also thinking of stopping at the pet store and buying some goldfish. Then again I might hit the local pond saturday evening for some gills. What would be the recommended sizes to use.

Well we hit the spillway on oshaunesy sp?. Didn't get any bites. I caught quite a few nice sized gills and shad for bait. I also caught 7 smallies and a crappie. One of the gills i netted was 1lb 2 ounces. I also caught a shad at 13 inches in length. I tried all different sizes of bait with no luck. i went to the petstore nearby to get some goldfish. They were very pricy. The cheap ones at 26cents were no longer that 2 inches. The only 4 inch plus gills they had were specialty goldfish at 26$ a piece.

yeah you need to hit the baitshop for goldies.......around Ohio they're usually about $9 a pound....

I tried to hit the local baitshop but for some reason they closed an hour early. Pending on the weather I hope to try again this weekend.

Not sure if you have ever been to Fishermans Warehouse off of Williams Rd. but they usually have a nice selection of koi, goldfish, chubs, and israle carp. Good luck on the Scioto, the weather is getting nasty fast.

I was just at that fishermans warehouse and they do have a lot of stuff. I agree the weather is getting nasty fast so it's all deer hunting for a while!!

Supposed to be sunny and mid to upper fifties this weekend. Then 62 on monday. I have not been to fishermans wharehouse in a long time but I know where it is. Do you think goldies would work better than live shad and gills?
BassMassey
10-26-2005, 09:09 PM
they would stay alive longer....and probally be more lively......

I know I had some gills out last weekend and had them in the water for upwards of an hour and they were still liveley as heck. when I left I took one of my hook and threw him in the water and he took off pretty quickly.
The only 4 inch plus gills they had were specialty goldfish at 26$ a piece.
26$ for bait??? each???
Think I'll pass

These were specialty gold fish for aquariums. It was just the cheapest goldies they had over 3 inches.

Bassy, I know of only one place in Ohion that sells Goldfish for $9 per pound anymore. Between $16-19 seems to be the going price now. One of the largest suppliers for the Ohio area raised their prices, I know 3 shops as well as Gander Mountain got theirs fromt he same place, all 4 raised their prices earlier this year.

YES BIG TIME! Something about the suppliers increasing the prices. The only place in the state that I know of still sellign them for $9 per # is in Lancaster.

Im new to this forum so could you guys give me some good local spots if you know any. I live up north more, in Massillon. I love catfishing but up here all i can catch is Channel's and Bullheads. I have yet to see a Flattie come out of the Tusc up here. The biggest channel I've caught this year was 25 1/2 inches. I didn't have a scale, and the local baitshop could not find there's (bastards) lol. But just the feel of holding it i would guess 5lb or more. But I could be wrong. I'm kinda new at the whole catfishing scene. I was more of a Crappie and bluegill fisherman. But that just got boring. What got me into catfishing was one night i went fishing with my boss at a private lake called Lake Mohawk. I watched him fight this 32 inch catfish for 25 minutes on 5 lb test. God was that pole going nuts. Every time he got it up to the service and close to the boat all you heard was the line start pulling out and down he went. That fish just didnt want to be caught lol. But finally i was able to net it. Again we had no scale so we couldnt weigh it. (Note to self) BUY A DAMN SCALE.
Could use some advice, and some good local spots. ! Thanks

I know some good spots for channels but have yet to get the flattie. Also are you bank bound or do you have a boat?

I'm more of a bank fisherman, I like fishing on boats on lakes and stuff, but the tuscy up here is just not very deep nor very wide for boats unless you have a little canoe or a little row boat, I personnaly dont have a boat, nor will i prolly have one for a while. I'm gonna have to cut down on the fishing alot for now ! Poor me. But my girlfriend just gave birth to our first child. A little girl, born tuesday at 10:57am, weighing in at 8lbs 8 onces, 20 1/2 inches. Such a beautiful little girl. But im still gonna try my hardest to fish when i can! So would be nice if there were some local guys a little closer to me that know some real good spots but, untill then the hunt is on, and i am determined to find my Monster. Wish me luck !

Congrats on the Daughter! Mine is 6 now and just got into Bluegill fishing lol
I had been hitting the Scioto down at 104 and 316 around South Bloomfield. Pulled a @10# channel out in August. I have to take a trash bag each time I go and clean the area up though from bank wash and other fisherman who don't clean up after themselves :cursing: Next year I'm going to drive down 23 and try that spot out behind Wal-Mart in Circleville.
Mathersm did you make it to the O'shaugnesy? I'd been wanting to try that out as well, but never made it this year.

Didn't get the chance. Ended up fishing a lake right down the road though. Got an 8# channel and got nailed on a 6 inch gill but missed it.

I know that there are Gar in the Scioto River. I am fishin' down by the bridge by the McDonalds and the Big Fat Greek Quazene (I don't know if I spelled that right) On Riverside Dr.
Is there any good spot around there to catch some Gar while the weather is still in the upper 40's. :glare:
And what bait do I use for Gar n e way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

usually every time i'm fishing for big cats gar mess with me on the Muskingum......I think cut bait or dead bait would be your best bet

Would definitly try the cut or dead bait. I would use small rope of some sort for a leader line. They dont really get hooked. They will get their teeth caught in the rope when they go to rolling around. Just a suggestion I have never really fished for them but caught a couple. Seen people fishing for them in the Ohio river with the rope leader. Also heard of putting shreaded pantyhose on the line for them to get caught up in.

I catch gar on live minnows all the time in the creek near my house.
