It could happen to anyone at any time. Here's info on what the California state records are and what to do when you land a monster:

i cant believe its better to kill the fish then to let it go. i mean if a state record is on the line thats still not worth tilling it. i mean dont get me wrong i eat all that i catch. but if its too big for taste i let it go.
