I was thinking of going out either Friday or Saturday and fising the MN river near Shakopee or Burnsville or possibly even near St Peter to try for some flatties or maybe a few walleyes. I plan fishing from shore. IF I decide to go to St Peter, I will drive, and anyone is free to tag along. Anyone else interested? If you are interested, let me know by Thursday night, so I can try and get some bait.

Rob,
Where you at in MN? Do you work a Sunday through Thur work week?
I work a Sun -Thur work week, so most of my fishing is done Fri and Sat. When my fiance is off during the week, I may make a few late night trips during the week.

Thats pretty cool. I grew up in Le Center, and I have fished the St Peter Area pretty heavily the past 20 yrs or so. I live in Eden Prairie now. I know a ton of good catfish spots right in St Peter. I might head down near the boat landing this weekend in St Peter to try for some flatties. I usually dont get out there until a little before dark, and usually stay until 3 or 4 am. Pretty much got it figured out that right in that area, there is usually a 10:00 pm, 12:00 Am, 2:00 Am and 4Am bite there.

I also do alot of fishing near the Kasota landing. I catch a lot of fish there, but usually not a whole lot over the 20+ lb range. The Walleyes should be in that creek now....if a person can get back there. I was down in Kasota this past weekend, and the road back to the boat landing was still under about a foot and a half of water.

If you decide to go out there this weekend, let me know, and I'll see if I can make it down there!

The past couple of years I have been fishing the St. Peter area quite a bit. The river is still pretty high even though it has come down, the kasota area is still under a bit of water I am guessing. Good news though the big flats are out and about. A buddy of mine got a 42lb flat last night. The bite lately has been between 9p and about 11p from the reports I have been hearing from friends. I still am not sure what my plans are for this weekend, might be going out in a boat on Fri and I might be going to a catfishing/bachelor party Sat. night. I will let you know though.

The river is dropping so slow right now I wish it would come down another couple of feet. Its suppose to get alot warmer next week but with that comes the chance of more rain.

Very nice night out after the last couple of crappy weeks we have had. I was so happy to finally be out o the river again and not be freezing my butt off. I got a 28lb and a 3lb. I wish I coulda stayed out longer but my buddy had to go, plus he didnt even have a single run.

Just got back from the river over by St Peter. Between two of us we landed 5 fish. One small channel and four flatties. One flattie measured just under 41" and the other 3 were in the 25-30" range. The biggest had to probably push a bit over 30 lbs, but the other flatties were in the 10-15 lb range.Solid fish, but nothing to brag about.
Although the river has come down some, it is still plenty high with a pretty swift current on the mainstream. we had Our best luck in spots along shore with eddys present, or flats where we knew there were submerged sandbars.

Rushing,
There have been some BIG walleyes taken out of the backwater in St Peter in the past week. I know for a fact of 4 taken out of there over 8lbs, and numerous in the 3-5 lb range. If you get a chance to go into Hermies bait shop, check out the wall. A guy I used to work with has a 9lb 3 oz Walleye on the board from the past week.

I fished up river from St. Peter last night and it was slooow, from reports from other friends that were out last night it was slow for them too. We only managed one small 4lb flat. Some friends in a boat got a 33lb and a 8lb, thier fish came early then nothing. We only stayed out until about 1am, with the lack of action and the chill in the air we called it a night. Glad to hear you had some luck! I did see a picture of a flat that came out of the pond in St. Peter on a flyrod yesterday!

Not quite sure the back water you are talking about, but those are some nice eyes!

Hey Guys,
had 3 good runs, No fish boated when we went out on the boat Sat eve. Water is coming down. It could be prime next weekend if there are no big rains and we get the warm weather forcasted.
Ryan, Sweet Job on getting some flatties. The 42" has the potential to be a big fish if you compare to others approximate same size, but they can be lean this time of year if they are just starting to bite.
Rushing, I hear you about the chill after 10:30 that set in.
I saw the pic of the Flat that came out of the pond on a flyrod, and the carp to I guess. The luck:crazy:
I tip my hat to the guy for going the distance. How long did it take him to get it in?
thanks

Rushing,
Where up river where you fishing? Below the State Hospital where the rock piles are, or the other way towards Le Sueur?

The backwater I am referring to is in St Peter right behind the Cop shop. We went there Sat night and the water in ther has came down quite a bit, but they were still getting Nice Walleyes using bobbers and minnows/leeches. Some were getting a few casting also.

Larry,
When we going to get out sometime? What days of the week do you usually go out? I dont know where you go out, but I drove down by Blackdog, and it only took me 15 minutes. I thought it was a further drive for me than that.
I may possibly fish the River in Chaska early this week, depending on how late I have to work. I have some bait to use up yet!

Here is a pic of one of the flatties we caught. I think it was the third firsh of the night, and I think it went right around 15 lbs. Not a bad fish, but I hope to find a few bigger ones in the coming weeks.

Hey Guys,
Ryan I usually head out on a weekend night. Did an 3:00 early trip last week.
Try to get on the water as early as possible. Usually ends up between 5-7pm and fish till 12-1.
Black dog is really close.
Ive seen a flattie pulled in right under the 35W bridge.
It was less than 10lb though.
You know you have the fishing bug when you look at the conditions and know its going to be tough to catch em. And you say *&#$ it and head out. And you repeat process for a few days running.
(this was me last week).
Gonna wait till this weekend. It will be here soon enough.
Conditions should be on or getting ready to start.

YEah...I wish I could head out this weekend, but the fiance has to work Thur-Sun, so I guess my weekend is shot. On the flip side, she is off tonight through Wed, so after work I may head out for a couple hours.

Rob,
To Get to the backwater....
when you turn off the street and head back by the cop shop, drive by the landing, follow the paved road along the kids fishing pond. As you get almost all the way back to where you started from, you will see a couple of barricades. just stop there, and walk back. Follow the trail to the left and it will bring you there.
Also, ...isnt the water running prettty fast down below the Hospital there?

rushing
05-22-2006, 05:46 PM
Must kinda just be a back water during high water. I wil have to drive past there tomorrow moring after work and check it out. Yeah the the water is moving super fast and its very deep below the hospital.

nuthinlikeacat
05-23-2006, 02:51 AM
YEah, we tend to hit that area below the hospital once or twice a year. There are some big fish there, but they are too far and few between for me. It didnt bother me as much when I had all the time in the world to fish, but with my limited time now, I like to go to more productive spots.

It was very windy and the lightening started to kick up a bit and felt a few rain drops, so we decieded to call it a night. The river is droppin very fast. I wonder if thats why it has been slow the past couple of nights?:confused2:

Larry

Glad I sat out. Others had reported it being slow also.

The water needs to warm up a little more and you will see the action pick up.
Wait till Fri, Sat, Sun Eve. Temps will be up around 65-67 and the water level will drop 1-2ft.
Conditions will be as best as they can for 06 so far.

What teams are you guys on for the tourney.

I went out tonight for an hour off shore near the Chaska Boat landing. Had one run right away, and it ended up being a 17.6 lb flattie. Took the necessary pics and sent them off in hopes Paul can get me on a team. That would be a nice start if it would count.

Too bad I wasn't on a team this summer I would have a 43lb flat on the board! We fished from 9:30pm -12am and got six fish.
3 - under 10lb
1 - 11lb channel
1 - 15lb flat
1 - 43lber (my personal best!)

I have been trying hard for two years to break the 40lb mark and have come so close and finally broke it. The fish were still biting when we left but the nats were so bad out that we were gettin eating alive so we caled it a night. I have caught almost 100lbs of catfish this year and its not even June yet! Its looking to be a good summer!

Looks like your knocken them dead at your new spot.
My buddy and I went down and fished from shore in Shakopee on the south side of the river. We tried 2 spots. behind the log jam on 101 bridge and below the boat launch. I may have had one bite. Lost a bullhead.
Want to try a little further up the river. It gonna suck being with out my boat for another 2 weeks.

Larry,
When were you down there this weekend? I drove down to the 101 bridge Saturday with my girls to check out a few spots. There is a sandbar starting to form upriver about a couple hundred yards from the bridge. Looks like a lot of people have been fishing it. Although it looks like a good spot to try, I have no idea if there are any deep holes there, and it looks a little thin on structure. My guess is there are fish there, but w/o a lot of cover, and no idea as to if there is a deep hole, there may be no biggens there. I still have your number. I'll have to find out what the fiance works this coming week. what type of work schedule do you work?

Rushing,
On the way back from graduations in Mankato on Friday, I stopped by where you have been fishing. A couple of your buddys were fishing there in a boat (River Pro boat) I believe. I didnt get a chance to wet a line, but checked out a few other spots on the way back to the cities. My friend was down there and talked to them, and I was wondering if they ended up getting anything. I stopped back through there after stopping to see a few friends, and they were fishing the log jam at the old bridge legs.

The river is dropping fast, and according to the people I have talked to, the flatties are biting everywhere from New Ulm to Shakopee.

I was down there Fri Eve. probably started around 8:30. Stayed till almost Midnight. I work days (sometimes long ones.). Work on the weekends pretty regular as well.
If we can plan a little in advance I can adjust my scheduel so I'm off. Otherwise I can do say nuts and fish anyways and suffer through the next day.
Let me know if your interested. I'm loaning my boat to my buddy at the end of the week.. But before he takes it. I want to do a little scouting along shakopee to see where the holes are. I think I saw the Bar that you were talking about. Honestly, I think that the people fising are going for otherthings than cats. but I could be wrong.
Let me know what your scheduel is. Were long overdue for getting together and fishing (basically enought time talking ...........time to start walking the walk)

That's true Ryan. Catching bullhead used to drive me nuts. Of course now that you want to catch a few, they are tough to find. I do know of a lake in Albert Lea where they seem plentiful, I caught several of them a month ago or so. That's a ways to drive just for bait though.

06-09-2006, 06:25 PM
Yeah, I used to live around the Mankato area, and the lakes are full of Bullheads. Now that I live an hour from there it's quite a ways to drive to catch bait. I guess I can always catch a bunch, and try to keep them alive. But even with a bubbler and a place to keep them, when its this hot out its a chore to keep them alive. And I hate the fact of having to go buy bullheads....that just aint right!

Yeah we are spoiled down Kato way for bullies. I live in a basement apt so I have no prob keeping 12-18 bullies in a 5gal bucket alive for as long as I need to. Plus my friends all have some sort of bait tank so if I dont have bait they do. I fished a great snag thursday night I only caught a couple under 20lbs but we couldnt stay very long though since my buddy had to work the next day so we got off the river about 11pm. I need to get a boat!

I usually dont bother taking pics of any fish smaller than 20lbs but I just bought a digital cam (waiting for it to be delivered) so I am sure I wil soon be taking pics of anything and everything since I no longer have to pay for the film to be developed. Yeah moving in aboat that fast around here is askin for trouble unless you have a River Pro. The water is alot "skinnier" down here and tons of deadheads just hiding underneatth the surface. Takes time to get to different spots but better safe than sorry!

Hey Rushing, I saw your friends out in the river Pro A while ago. Just wondering where they got that, and how much it ran? Those jet boats are the way to go, and I have tried to find one like they have, but have had no luck finding one.

nuthinlikeacat-

RiverPro is manufactured in Hillsboro, MO. Kevin Turner is the owner of the company. I do not think you'll find any dealers locally or in the state for RiverPro, you'd have to work directly with Kevin.

Cost of one new will put you in the 25K range. And they sell used for around 15K +

For most of us, its a dream!

Yeah, at that cost, I guess It is a dream. I guess if I'm going to spend that kinda money on a boat, it will be both a fishing and recreational boat.

Thanks for the info:smile2:

Ryan - Those River Pros are so much fun! They're like tanks you can fly around the river like a sports car in. Big money though!

Hanson - I am suprised you're not ordering one right now, after that 48lber you caught the other night!!

I havent talked to anyone who has been out down here since we have had this cold front and all this rain. Wonder how the flats are down here? The only night this week I am gonna be able to get out is tomorrow. But I'm sure I'll be out all next weekend.

Went fishing just outside New Ulm this weekend. The river was very high. We had about 10 feet less shoreline than usual. I did find a bait shop in town with bullheads for $3 a dozen, so that worked out. We caught one channel (8 lbs) and no flatheads! It was kind of disappointing. We had a few runs, but couldn't keep them hooked. Hopefully I can get out again soon.

Thanks for the report. I was down Near Mankato on Sat night getting bait, but I didnt do any fishing being it was raining on and off all day.
I don't blame you Ryan, we fished in the rain a few hours Saturday evening. It quit around 8 or so and was clear all night after that. The bank was quite muddy so watching your step was important. We had one guy who had a few too many and eventually slipped out of his chair and backpeddaled into the river. It was pretty halarious. Good thing we had a change of clothes for him!

Yeah, i had both fo the girls with me (5,6). I brought their tent to set up on a sandbar, in case we went out. As cold as it was along with the fact of it being muddy, we decided not to go. I have a busy rest of the week....between two jobs I have no extra time at all, so I guess my fishing is done until this Fri night. I'm hoping to get a hold of Larry and hit the river this weekend....as long as its not to crappy out! I'm also still going in the BOC Survivor so I'm sure I will have a task to complete also by the end of this week.

Ryan,
I'm thinking Sat night might work. I'm gonna try to get my boat back from Shamu. He will be getting into town from Canada Sat afternoon. As long as nothing is broke. Lets hit it Sat night in the boat. Otherwise we will have to hit a shore spot.
I'm Game.

J-man congrats on the nice channel. Keep working the Flatties your turn will come. I've been doing quick sets to get my two for the year. If I let them have it for more than a couple seconds I seem to miss them. good Luck
thanks

I'm here, just got done with my long week so I'll be out fishin for most of this next week. Just got back from catching this weekends supply of bullies. Hopefully will be pouring some lead this afternoon. The supply me and my friends poured 2 seasons ago is runnin out. I put some of those carbonex drag wasers in my 6500 this week so hopefully this weekend I will get into some fish to try em out. The only time I got out this past week was last monday. I was out for 11hrs missed a couple, one very nice fish missed. Didnt land my first fish until 5am, lil 8lber. The bite has been slow and very late. Most bites have come well after midnight. Summer is here full force now with this heat and the ultra low river levels!!!

yep, the fishing has slowed, and the bite times have changed. To me this is the best time of the year to fish....maybe not so much for the bite, more for the fact they bite later at night, and most people decide to call it quits around midnight. The sound of the frogs, the poppin from the fire, the sound of the clicker screaming in the early morning hours....and watching the sun come up....its all priceless. I plan on heading out Sat night for an all-nighter, so I'll give an update then. I'm going to start scouting spots for when the catfish tourneys start.

Wed is my b-day, so I'll probably be going out that night also.

Rushing,
On the way back from graduations in Mankato on Friday, I stopped by where you have been fishing. A couple of your buddys were fishing there in a boat (River Pro boat)

Wonder who that could've been?
