Went out tonight with a dozen creek chubs caught 3 channels and a nice 17.5 pound flathead. This was a strange flathead i was watching my lines when i noticed the one line slack up a little and took a couple of clicks of the baitrunner this happened for a couple of minutes thought it was a small channel again disengaged the baitrunner and could feel little twitches so i set the hook and this flathead went crazy actually gave up a pretty good fight took longer to bring this one in than a thirty pounder a couple of nights ago.

All of this happended within 1 hour, Started fishing at 7:30 and the plan was to quit at 10:00. Well 10:00 came with out any runs so we started to cleen up our stuff and take it to the truck. As soon as we made the first trip to the truck my clicker goes off (strike 1), I toss the bait back out, 5 min pass Chris has a run on a small chub (strike 2), another 5 min Chris has another run on a big gill (fish on) get her in about 75% of the way and it get off. His bait was beat up but still living, 2 min after his bait hit the water (we got a ripper) he picks his rod up and sets the hook (snap/strike 3) the line was all torn up from the previous battle. As we all talk to try to figure out what happend, I gave my real about 3 cranks (here we go again) fight her about 75% of the way in (strike 4) I thought 3 strikes and your out. Well this bait has been tasted 2 times now but it was still kicking, toss him out onh more time and say 5 more min, now all our stuff is at the truck. Fish on this time I walked up the bank so I did not get hung up on that ledge that cut Chris's line, get her to the bank and her gills flare and out come a chub, get her out of the water and look and there is Chris's second hook in her mouth. This fish must have been very hungry.

Mark , is it just me or is the flathead bite slowed down over the past week. Have you been catching any? I havent been getting very many runs lately. Do you think they are spawning or what?

catchinghogs
06-13-2006, 06:18 PM
Joe something fishy is going on.I have been fishing my holes that produce big flatheads and just a couple of small channels and thats it ihavent really changed anything either same bait same spots but no flatheads.I think it could be something with the moon phase or maybe they are spawning.Going to give it a shot this weekend again.

06-14-2006, 12:01 PM
I' ve got some gills, chubs and suckers . i m going to give it a go tonight. If nothing is happening , I'm going to assume they are spawning and fish for something else the next week or so. I 'll let you know what happens.

Went to the Mon last night for my first time going after these big cats I caught a small fish 8lbs, was nice to break in one of my new rods I have lived next to the Mon all my life and never fished for these cats. I can tell I will be doing a lot of this it is totally different than what I am used to using powerpro and baitfeeder reels is a new world for me.

The cats are eating good now on the Monongahela, 7/15/07 started fishing around 9:00, it was slow at first but picked up around 1:30am. First landed a 8lb flat than a 12lb flat next was a 9lb channel than a 15lb flat. Just want to tell people that fish the lock 4 area that the fish comm. is out in full force. Make sure you have your fishing licences and if you are on a boat make sure your paper work is up to date and you have all of the safety equipment required.

Nice work Mark, I was on the Allegheny last night around Roston and caught 8 all between 8" and 11". The little ones were biting hard but nothing of any size. I had a lonely bluegill out there swimming from 8:30 PM to 2:30 AM without so much as a nibble.:sad2:
