thought i would start a tread on the river (Colorado) for info and fishen reports , as some of ya know i do most all my fishen on the colorado river near blythe Ca., the area around blythe is what I know best, but theres more then 150 miles of river so there alot of the river I have never been on and hope there's some folks that know other spots that they can add what they know and there reports

my thing this year will be to get the biggest flathead I can find, last year I got my first flatheads, my biggest being 17lb and think i got 15+or- between 5 and 12

found this on the web http://www.usbr.gov/lc/region/g2000/assess/chapter3.htm this has great info on the history of the lower colorado river a lot to read but worth the reading

Hey Dale, Thanks for the info on the lower river, lots of good info there. I am planing on doing a lot of fishing from Palo verde south to imperial dam, starting in June, when the weather starts to get good and hot. Thats when I feel is the best time to get the big flatheads. The hotter the better and you can fish all night in shorts and tee shirts and sleep all day under the A/C. Hope to see all my BOC Brothers at the river this summer and do so fishing together.

Dale do you also happen to have the details/website that contains the daily rising and lowering of the river. That would be extremely helpful as well.

here ya go on the web site http://www.usbr.gov/lc/riverops.html this one here is were you start off then clic on past 4 days and you should get this http://www.usbr.gov/lc/region/g4000/hourly/yester.html your looking for palo verda dam,you can studie these over time and you can get an idea of how it goesand get a understanding of how it works, if you want to know what going to happen you need to clic on Projected Operations then go to weekly op sched http://www.usbr.gov/lc/region/pao/rivops.html when looking at this you need to look at parker dam relese anything around 10000 cfs is a good flow of water but they only give whats going on for the day not by the hour and what happens there doesn't happen untill the following day in blythe.

heres another site that may help you out better http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/current/?type=flow you need to clic on below palo verda dam or were ever your planing on fishing http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/uv/?site_no=09429100&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060 . If u go to the last 31 day you can see what it was like when we were there for the gathering http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/uv?dd_cd=02&dd_cd=06&format=gif&period=31&site_no=09429100

Hey guys I went along with Riverbud for some flatheading and we came up. This was an excellent fishing trip. We started out looking for gills in the morning with minimal success only getting 3. But those few that we had proved to be the difference maker. Later on around 3 we went out in the main river and found channels on stink bait. Later on around 7pm we posted up on a flathead spot along timble weeds in about 6 feet of water. Dale gets first dib on a 7 pound flat. I follow shortly with a 5 . Then when it got dark I put on the gill. First run at 1120pm turned up a 30 pounder. Then second run around 230am turned up a 35 pounder. This was the first time I got into flatheads and it will be the beginning of many adventures of flatheading for my future. Thanks to Dale for putting me onto the the flatties. Will post pics as soon as i can fix the resize problem.

Dale I see you got the toon in the water, How did it work out? What part of the river did you fish? Did you do any fishing in the area that we were fishing that had all the holes? I plan on coming down about June 10th or 11th hope we will be able to together some time around then. I will give you a call when I get back from Oklahoma.

Hey Blue & Riverbud,

Long time no chat. Hey Riverbud, is that a new boat that I see you guys on in "Blue's" pictures?

Nice to see you guys getting into some flatties. I think that I might have to go down there sometime to check out the action, if that's okay with you Riverbud?

Don't tell me you don't remember me guys? It's CHUY from the Tournament get together that we had last year, the first one.

Hey Dale,

I happy to hear you got your toon like you wanted. What did you ever do with your old boat that you had at the tourney?

Did you sell it or thinking of selling it? I think I might know somebody that might want to buy it if the price is right. Let me know. Just PM me with the details if you are thinking of selling it and I'll just forward the information to the necessary personnel.

Thanks,

I dont know which way you go to the river...next time stop by the salton sea and get some tilapia...they make great bait for flatties

bluehunter
05-09-2006, 09:35 PM
Salton sea is a ways from the location we were at, but I am going to fish those areas near the sea as well soon. I been getting bits of info about where the best bait is and is adding them to my list. There are tons of backwaters and canals to get bait at. I am on a search to use tilapia next as well.

Forgot to say when me and blue were looking over the side of the boat down in the water there was a big flat cruze by maybe a 25lber the thing looked like a sting ray on the bottom. here some more pics http://www.catfish1.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=8972&d=1147161870 and http://www.catfish1.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=8995&d=1147225716

I did a search and the biggest Blue caught around here , actually up by where mutt lives 2 hours from here on the San Jaquin River was 78 pounds

bluehunter
05-10-2006, 08:40 PM
That is a nice blue caught up there. If they spawn in that river than there should still be some in that area. Moving water and above 70 water temps is what they need. I know down here in So cal they spawn in certain waters and not all. Might be worth looking into if the river is plentiful with them.

Hey Riverbud,

How far south are you talkin'? I've always wanted to fish Martinez Lake, I've heard there are some monsters in there that are caught every year. Let me know when you'll have the next River gathering so I can take the necessary time off to make it this time around.

Are any of you going to enter in the Tournament that the BOC is holding for the summer?

How do you guys fish with the live bait? weigh on the bottom technique?

One hook or two?

crazychuy
05-13-2006, 04:32 PM
The only problem is one of the rules that might hender some of us SoCal participants. That rule being "No Pay Ponds". Meaning Irvine or SARL catches would be counted out.

Looks like it's Vicente or any of the other Diego Lakes then, huh. OR, the River.

CHUY

bluehunter
05-13-2006, 10:20 PM
Yes Chuy Irvine and Sarl is out of the plan, but thats OK with me as I only fish those lakes certain times of the year anyway. There is very good lakes around that is not pay that can do well. Its going to be the river, canals, and S.D. lakes for me. I been fishing these lakes mainly anyway.

bluehunter
05-13-2006, 10:25 PM

I fish with the hook on the bottom and the weight about 8-10 inches above it. Some people like to use leaders tied to a swivel that way.

I use one hook about a size 8/0 for my gills and 5/0 - 6/0 for the goldfish. The weight depends on the rate of current of course but I been using a 3 ounce torpedo weight for mine. You can use the sliding egg or flat sinker as well.

bluehunter
05-14-2006, 01:14 AM
Stratch the last post of 8-10 inches. Its more like a foot and a half - 2 feet, 24 inches. I just now saw my mistake. LOL.

Hey Blue,

I understand what you mean about the tournament. I think I'm still going to sign up if it's not too late. I would have to say fishing the River would probably be the best bet on racking up some points on the tournament.

Guys these flatheads are biting along the river now. Went out with Catmando and met with Riverbud there. Good fishing that night (Sat) as Catmando got a 20 pounder. Riverbud's uncle got a 41 pounder. So the chase is on along the River. I will be back this coming weekend along with Riverbud. I am sure Dale will post the picks when he gets a chance.

Ps the bluegill bite is great as well not only for bait but there is some panfry size ones as well. Next time I will keep a few for the frier.

Went out to the colorado river near blythe, took my uncle and cuz for some flat head fishing bluehunter and catmando were also there in cats boat, went out sat morn to catch some bluegills for bait end up with a dozen+, took off about 7pm up the river to my hole, at about 9:30 i got a big run fought the fish for about 5 min. kept on taking my 35# off of my abu 7000 big game reel and started runing to the tules so i tried to put the brakes on it and it end up braking off at the hook . at 2:30am my uncle got a big run after about a 10 to 15 min fight we pulled in what end up being a 47lber, the following morning looked in to its mouth and found my 8/0 gami octapuss hook in its mouth, went out last nite and got a 5 lber for myself

well got back from the river last nite after a 10 day vaction, made 3 all nite trips up the river in my ol cat-toon, the first trip sat. nite was with blue(flat)hunter and his son, he end up with a 20 and 35 and I end up with a 8 and 30 my bigest ever at that point

the 2nd trip was wed nite and was with a buddy from camp TJ. got a lot of runs but just couldn't hook most of them, tj had a run and got the fish all the way to the boat and the big fish spit the hook at the side boat about half way into that fight i got big hard run on my big ugly stix tiger rod after about 10 or 15 sec i put my penn321 in gear and let my 8/0 gami circle hook do its job at first the fish didn't seam to be very big it made a fast short run and then started giving in and got it near the boat and then it turned to the boat and ran to the boat at first i thought i had lost another fish but reeled like a SOB and cought up with the fish about 15 feet in front of the boat as soon as he felt my 40lb maxima line tighten he turnd and ran out 30+ yards fought it back after a few more short strong runs the thing went to the bottom and was like pulling car off the bottom with a fishing poll finley got its head up and at the side of the boat and grabed it by its lower jaw and pulled in my biggest flat ever at 48 lb

then sat nite TJ and myself went up river and meet up with Bluehunter and karodi (keith)in his boat and catmando in his boat and a martinman from AZ in his boat all them dudes got some flats in 5 to 10 lb range, on my boat i got 1 run all nite but that was cool I had my fun earler in the week but my buddy TJ got a 28 lb and a 38 lb

thanks ya all, man it's been the best fish ever over the last month, that ol toon I bought this last winter sure has brought on some good luck. steve for bait we have been getting bluegill the size of your hand and thay have been the best for the big fish but TJ got his on gold fish. here's what we have got in 5 trips up the river

on 5/6 bluehunter got his 1st flats ever a 30lb and a 35lb

on 5/20 my uncle got his bigest fish ever a 47lb flat

on 5/27 bluehunter got a 20lb and a 35lb a I got 10lb and a 30lb all flats

on 5/31 I got my biggest ever the 48lb flat

on 6/3 my buddy TJ got his first flats ever a 28lb and a 38lb

what good about were we have been fishing is that there may be 2 other boats that I know of that fish this part of the river and they only fish it may 3 or 4 time a summer , most all think that the fish are not there because of all the boat traffic, jet skiers, wake boarders and such. I thak a ll the fish added up to something like 320 pounds, I know one thing we all got full frezeers and its going to be CPR from here on out

Hey Dale and Brain, congrats on some nice flatheads.
I have seen your posts on another site.Good to see you guys are at the boc as well. That is some good info dale thanks.I was at the colorado a little north of Blythe last weekend 6/16-6/18.Had two nights of fishing and only boated one flatty about 5 lbs.I guess I chalk it up as a learning trip.I think I was fishing too deep and in too much current.Next trip I was thinking of trying around the palo verde area.Well now you now of another boat the at fishes that section of the river a few times a year.Have fished there before from shore and did pretty well on fish to 15lbs.Now I have a boat and its awhole new game being on the river.Hopefully next time I will have a better report with some pics.

-Nice to hear you guys are gonna start cpr the big ones, there are plenty of small eaters out there.

I have been checking out the other flathead forums and gathering alot of info. Also been studying the river on terraserver and have another spot picked out, gonna try and get a trip going on the 7th for two nights on the water.Did you read what the #3 pick was in the Press, talkin about some big fish maybe a newrecord for the river.Wow.Also says some guys use 130# dacron line ,that sounds kinda big but they are talking about 100# fish.I have 30#mono spooled on my reels and I might bump it up to 40# before the next run at the river.Later,

hey billy welcome to the boc dude, dude find some slower moving water around some tullys you,ll never befishing to deep at the river if u can ffind water over 15 feet ud b lucky, theres places you can find were the water will run up stream or edeys

well went the river last weekend and didnt get a bite but keith had a large fish that broke his 25 lb line at the side of his boat, he thought the fish was 40 to 50

woodchucker
06-29-2006, 02:19 PM
Thanks Dale,
I will be out there on the 7th and the 8th,I have a couple spots picked out to try next time.I might try a spot below palo verde,it might be in the cibola preserve but there are about 4 big rocky points that stick out about 20ft each on the arizona side, they make real good current breaks with a small amout of back current right next to deep water of about 20ft.Fished there before from shore and caught a few fish to about 12lbs a couple years ago.Ill will be looking for less current.Last trip both spots I tried had fairly strong current. The first was 18-20ft deep in a main outside bend of the channel, and the next night I fished right behind a sand bar in the middle of the river in about 7-8ft.And the grass was constantly fouling my rigs, had to check baits every 15mins to clear away the grass so my rig dident get twisted. Is the grass not so bad in the slower current, also do you doulbe anchore on your spots or just throw one?TAke it easy,
Billy

bluehunter
06-30-2006, 06:17 PM
The grass is always a problem, more so in the faster current than the slower. Its best to check your rig every now and then to see if its cool and free of all the mess. But to anser the question, the grass is not much of a problem as it is in faster current.

We double anchored in the smaller boat. In the pontoon, we had like 3 anchors out, or was it four. It took more to hold the pontoon.

Think were going to start hunting for them now, been a little slow over there. thinking there on the spawn. spent 4 nites out ended up with one 5+ lb flat and gang of channels, i think woodchucker got a 16 and maybe a 12 the nite before i fished the spot. ryan- martinman got a few at 5 lbs

man them weeds are the worst this year, billy get yourself 2- 20lb mushroom river anchores, the one with the slots in it, put 4' of 3/8 chain with 50' of rope

think i may go next weekend

Hello all, Billy (woodchucker) welcome aboard, Gald to see you got to meet Dale at the river he is the best. Billy I know the spot you are talking about below Palo Verde, I fished that area alot last year. Haven't been there this year, been fishing with Dale around Blythe. He has turned me on to that area. I have seen alot of good fish come from there, only thing I haven't been the one hook up too them.
Dale, whats the story on the river, have you down there lately? I am getting the bug to come down. They say the hotter the weather the better the flathead fishing. I sure though we had all the right stuff the late time I was there, but not even a bite, oh well the company was good and Keith did get two nice fish. Well thats the store of my live ether a dallor shot, wrong place right time, or a day late. Let me know the next time you are going and I will meet you there. This time I will bring tools to put more vents in ice machine cabnet.
Later Bill

I fish the canals all over yuma county and ive been having extremely good luck just having a little problem getting the bluegills my bluegill spot dried up but there are some monster flaties down here and laguna dam has them and im pretty sure the state record was broke there to I caught a 43# there about three years ago and alot of other big ones.

Nice fish Jason. Surprised I haven't run into you around here. As you know there are a lot of canals but getting bait is a problem. If you are in the Yuma area and have a casting net you can get all the bait you want in the drainage ditches/canals near agricultural fields. A buddy of mine showed me how and it was unreal, only took a handful of casts and we had all the bait we needed. Best of luck. Hope to see ya around sometime.

I been working my "A$$" off, but Phil (Dealtlover) & I been hooking up every now & then and doing some fishing. I had this Honey Hole where we were getting some nice Channel Cats, Black Bass & Bulegills from until that place was no more :sad2: . But there are plenty of spots up here on the Delta, so it will be OK.

Hello All,
Hey Bert & Phil how you guys doing? We will need together when the bit starts at thr river again. But until then you both take care, and good fishing.
Dale, sounds like you got a house full and not much time to do any fishing.
I thank you got the right idea about moving around, those fish have to be around that area. Next time were down there need to take more time and graft that area maybe 1/2 mile up and down river and on both sides, there has to be something to hold those fish in that area we just need to find were and what it is. Been hot here, Friday 118 at my house, if this keep up much longer when I die going to hell won't be that bad. Ha,Ha.

Hey Dale, Glad to see you had a good hunt. Are your house guess still with you or have you geven them the boot? I have been staying close to home, The wife came down Valley Fever ( caused by dust in the air) it took her about six week to get over it and then she had inter eat problems that were making her dizzy,I have been with her for 43 years and always though she was a little dizzy. Everthing is OK now. The last time I went fishing was at the river with you. I need to get the boat back in the water and restock the freezer, I am running low on catfish. Well just wanted to say hello and see how you were doing.
Talk to you later, Bill

Had a good time fishing this last sat. night fishing on the river with Ryan(martinman) and Bill(billyjo) , it was good weekend for the dude's from AZ , Ryan also did fri. nite in the wind and almost cold weather , not sure of the size but I think he said 2 flats around 5#. Man I know Ryan could not have been nothing but cold fri nite cuz it was more then cool sat. nite and the wind wasn't blowing, I think that maybe the last night time trip up the river for the year or going to have to work on staying warmer. last sat. nite Bill got 12+ lb flat and Ryan 16lb and 4lb flats and a 18in. smallmouth all the fish were caught on tilapia. Oh ya I got zip not even a bite

anyway hires pics of billyjo and martinman and martinmans 16lb and his smallmouth

vini we get them small mouth that size alot, that part of the river has some great small mouth fishing and very few people fishing for them

blue i sure hope so, man its a long time until may

talking about May sounds like along time off but were all talking about another gathering down there but this time its going to be sometime in May, im thinking the weekend between mothers day and memorial weekend would be best or the weekend before mothers day, I know May is a very busy month for alot of people but after this year i would have to say may has to be the best time for the the big flats

vini
09-29-2006, 05:37 AM
May have to try and make that one riverbud ( if we're not too busy):beated:

Smallmouth are hella fighting fish, I used to catch them in a creek that ran thru merced where I grew up and loved hooking into one of them , usually in the faster shallow water is where we caught them. Are they taking those big baits you guys throw out the talpia?
