I fished the Allegheny River Tuesday morning from 7:55AM till 10:45AM at Lock & Dam #6. Nice morning with temp. starting out at 46* and reaching 66* by the time I left. I caught 4 Walleyes - 15", 14", 14" & 13 1/2" on fatheads. Also 1 Carp - 28" on a fathead. That was a fun battle on an old Shakespeare Wonderod. I attached some photos.

Your right Jack! I can't wait wait for the Flatheads to start bitin'! The water temp. is still only 46*. We got a bunch of rain the last two days so that should help warm things up.

Catchaser,
I was back at lock 6 on Easter Sunday from around 3:30PM till dark. Only caught 3 smallmouth and 2 carp. But since dink is busting on your vintage equipment, I thought I'd attach a picture of one of the Easter smallmouths with my vintage 1972 Mitchell 300 with gold stren that I bought from KMart my senior year of High school 1977:)

I fished the Allegheny River at pool #6 this evening. I took a different approach this evening. I bought 2 doz. Rosie Red fatheads for bait. They are usually only available during the early part of Trout season. I figured I would try them on the river. I put out 1 pole with the fatheads and 1 pole with Danny King's punch bait that I just got from Catfish Connection. Well I didn't even get a bite on the pole with the D.K. I caught 3 Walleye/Sauger, 1 Smallmouth and 1 Whitebass on the fatheads. The interesting thing about me trying the orange fatheads was that I was only getting slow action while 2 guys fishing right below me were pounding fish on regular colored fatheads. I tried the experiment and must say that regular color fatheads were way better today anyway!

Fished Lock & Dam #6 this evening with my two youngest daughters. It was a spur of the moment thing so we didn't have much of a bait selection. Had a doz. crawlers and bread. We caught 5 Carp - 31", 28 1/2", 28 1/2", 21" and 19 1/2" all on bread ( this is fresh bread pinched on the hook as a doughball). We also caught 1 Smallmouth Bass about 12" on a nightcrawler. Sadly I have no photos as my digital camera decided to malfunction today:angry:

Scott, as soon as I get something worth photographing I sure will. Came close Friday night. A buddy and I were fishing the point below Raystown dam on the Juniata River and I fought what was most likely a carp for almost 15 minutes before my line broke. We got a glimpse with a flashlight when it was about 40 yards out and it was at least better than 3 feet long. Oh well its always the one that got away. I was just glad someone else was with me to witness it.

I caught my 1st Flathead of the year on Monday evening. It was 24" and was caught on a live Bluegill. Not a big 'un but it's a start. Nice to get the first Flattie under the belt. I also caught a White Bass and a Rock Bass. Went out again Tuesday evening and caught 4 Walleye, 2 White Bass and 2 Rock Bass. I used the Rock Bass for bait and had a real good hit but missed the fish. I was fishing on pool #7. I took photos of the Flathead but there on my regular 35mm camera and I need to get the film developed.

It vaires alot down there. I dont wade more than 15 feet from shore. there ar esoem really shallow flats out in the middle of the river. You should come down some time and fish. I catch more fish than you would believe there. I average at least 20 sauger and 20 white bass a day! And i caught a small channel yesterday while jiggin.

Fished the Allegheny on pool #7 this evening from my boat. I fished from 6:25PM till 8:45PM. I caught a huge Carp that was 31" and weighed a whopping 19.5#. Wow!!! What a battle. I caught it on a vintage Shakespeare Wonderod and Garcia Mitchell 301 with 8# test. I fought the brute for 15 min. and it ended up going around the back of the boat with my line dragging across a anchor rope. I have a full enclosure on the pontoon and ended up unsnapping the whole left side one snap at a time while fighting the fish with the other hand. I finally got around to the back side of the boat and managed to grab hold of the net and landed the porker. Man, that may have been the most intense battle I ever done with a fish! I also caught 3 Walleye - all small. I put out a couple of Bluegill the last hour and had a couple hits but no solid takes. Water temp. is only 53*. Hog Carp photos attached and a photo of a Trout I caught this morning on Buffalo Ck. - 16" Rainbow.

Don't know what the deal is with that! Water temp. is only 54* maybe they are not real active yet. I also tried Danny Kings punch bait and didn't get a bite. The water should start warming up now cause we will be getting some air temps. up in the 80's in a few days.

I was supposed to take Josh & his Dad out on my pontoon this evening but after watching the weather channel and seeing that they were calling for severe thunderstorms I called Josh and talked to his mom and told her we will have to pick another day. I've been caught out on the river during a storm and it's not a experience I hope to repeat. So I decided to fish at lock & dam #6 from shore. I figured as soon as it started to storm I would pack up & leave, well it turns out it is very nice all evening. I caught 2 Carp - both big! 31 1/2" and 30 1/2". This must be my week to catch big Carp! I attached a few photos!

I planned on going out on the boat on pool #7 but the weather channel was showing some bad stuff so I figured I would shore fish and run to the car if things got bad. I fished from 8:30PM till 12:10AM. I decided to target big Cat's. The only bait I took was Bluegill. I caught 1 Flathead 30 1/2" in the pouring rain. I attempted to take photos with my 35mm camera. I hope they come out alright! It's so hard to focus a camera in the dark especially when it's raining and the camera is on a tripod. I'll post a photo when I get film developed.

I fished Lock & Dam #6 this evening from 9:30PM till 11:45PM. This was a bonus fishing trip as we were at a family get together all afternoon. I mentioned to the wife when we got home what a nice evening it would be to fish. She said go if you want, she had studying to do for nursing school. I make it up to Lock #6 and almost went back home. There were cars parked everywhere, people had tents up, fires a blazin'. I took a look down by the lock wall and saw there was plenty of space available and hauled my gear down and set up. I rigged up the 1st rod and tossed it out with a chunky Bluegill, started to rig up the second rod and the 1st one buckles over, it hadn't been in the water 2 minutes and I got a nice 29" Flathead. Great start I thought, rebaited and tossed it back out. I went back to work rigging the 2nd rod when the first pole buckles over again! 28" Flathead this time. This is great! Got both rods out this time. Ten minutes go by and I got a 24" Flathead. Another 10 mins pass by and I nail a 21 1/2" Flathead. Got all 4 fish in the first 40 mins. and then nothing after that but I did have a bite right before I left but the fish never took it. I finished off a role of film and will drop it off for developing in the next day or so and will post some photos.

Scott, I was at lock 6 Saturday night and was there from 9:00PM untill 7:30 Sunday morning. There was even fireworks across the river at the campground Saturday night. I'm thinking that was what scared the fish away. LOL. I did manage to catch my first flathead ever. A 14" monster :smile2: . Anyway, I also caught a real nice channel cat 22" around midnight and didn't have another bite until the smallies started to bite at daylight. I'll post a picture of the channel cat later today. It sure did put up a nice fight.

Tim - How close to the Lock wall were you fishing? It seems I get my best action the closer to the wall I get. I agree about the fireworks scaring the fish, after I caught my 4rth Flathead last night the fireworks began across the river. They were shooting big, loud boomers and sure enough the fish stopped biting. I think this spot will be getting pounded now that nice weather is moving in. Congrats on the 1st Flathead and the 22" Channel - that's a nice one!

I was wondering if any of you pittsburgh local guys know where I can buy hooks that are legal to catch snapping turtles, or if you know what size the 3.5 inch long/ 1 inch barb to shank is. I really want to try it out this year and the season is coming up soon. Thanks in advance, Geoff

Yeah i was with phil, it was my idea to use the sauger because im the flathead hunter. I didnt have my A game today though. Just pounded the sauger as usual.

It wasn't much to show for a whole night but its looking good headin for the frying pan. Scott, I usually fish down by where the cable crossing sign is. Next time I'll try closer to the lock wall. Thanks for the tip.

I'll be fishing today at Lock 2 in highland park. I'm going to brave the 92 degree weather and fish for those cats. The shad started to run yesterday around dark so that seems like the time to go. I'll be fishing with the sauger again though. Good fishing guys.

I got together with fellow member gmhudak Weds. evening and we took the Cattracker1 up to Lock & Dam #8 on the Allegheny River. We fished from around 6:30PM till 9:10PM. Action was slow until the last half hour. We caught 3 Flatheads - 26 1/2", 21" & 20". All fish took a live Bluegill. A few photos attached.

I headed out with my gracious host scott (pa catchaser) last nite up to lock 8 on the allegheny. I definitely lerned a few things about cat fishing from him, and he even let me borrow a rod and some hooks. Caught 3 all together with him getting two and me one. It was a good nite.

Geoff - Pictures have to be resized to 500 x 400 or less to work on here. I have been using a free program called IrfanView 3.97. :0a26: It is pretty easy to use.

I fished the Allegheny at Lock & Dam #6 last night from 11:30PM till 2AM. It poured rain the whole time. I hooked and lost one fish that felt pretty nice on a Bluegill, had a few other bites but ended up with the dreaded "skunk". Oh well, better luck next time!
