we'll need them the last time I was out there I tied up 2 7oz weights just to hold the bottom. I know of a good spot for stripers but you have to be there right at the top of the tide. My buddy Gil who went fishing with us has caught 2 decent size stripers in the last week one at 10 and the other at 9 pounds.

It's just south of Rio Vista in between decker and sherman island. If you look for the sacramento river just south of rio vista you will see decker island then you will also see horseshoe bend it's in that area. That's almost on the other side of the delta we can also try another spot near 8 mile road which has tons of cats no monsters out of there yet but tons of cats and a few stripers. Lots of snags and but you don't need more than 4-5oz lead. I'm trying to see what the tides look like and also the flows of the rivers.

Didn't go out yesturday. Glad I didn't too;) It rained like no ones buisnes for a bit last night. I am headed out to Los Banos and will be back 2-3 pm. It looks beautiful today:) Anyone in a 1 hour drive going fishing this evening? If not I will keep to my old plan and hit the Delta Mendota canal. Let me know. Call me at 559-293-0458.........
We tried a new spot on the Delta Mendota happened to find a certain secret gate open:cool: passed thru and found a bend in the river and took a space (thought there was'nt a single soul on that whole part of the river for MILES and this is what we came up with.
I only caught the one but that was a great fight, Robb caught all the rest plus another few small ones, guess mine was a special gift i knew i was due for a double digit, my first ever i'm happy .
Robbs large cat went around 7-8 pounds we're going to try and find out what the damage to the fishs head was, may have been injury or some sort of bacterial flesh eating thing .
Some pics of the area, really nice spot.
Last pic is the fish Robb caught I am going to get a biologist I know to give me his opinion on that injury on his fish, I caught one last summer with similiar damage to the head just wondering whats causing this .

For central Calif that's a purty darn good stringer of cats. Were you using dip bait? Where were you fishing? I bet you guys will be hitting that spot again real soon.
Fatkat
04-16-2006, 12:57 PM
Nice catch guys.
Vini Those are some beautiful pics. :)
Thanks Fatkat that was the heaviest stringer yet for me:o
Captain that was the delta mendota area up the road from the sleugh.
I'm not exactly sure if we were fishing the San Jauquin river or the Mendota sleught they both run into the delta mendota canal if I am correct?
Anyhow we found a gate open (with a camera pointing directly at you when you go in) and followed it back NO ONE WAS OUT THERE it was great, no one had fished the spot we were in at all, no trash or evidence of anyone fishing back there so this may have been a fluke that that gate was open. There was a ranch hand house out there dogs chased my truck as we went by but we saw no people. Followed the river till we got to a few bends and thats where we fished.
We used everything as far as bait but caught most of the fish on liver, I think robb caught one on shad or anchovie and the bullheads were definetly sucking on the cut bait.
Imagine all I caught was that one big fish and it was the first and I barely had another bite, ROBB standing right next to me is catching a fish every half hour LoL, but I was happy with my catch, she almost pulled my pole into that water and then as I fought her, she tried to wrap herself around a branch that was coming out of the water, she had herself 2/3 of the way around the branched when I just wrenched herself back around she changed direction then and I had her coming my way once again (12 pound spiderwire saved me). I caught her on my medium weight cherry wood pole so it was a GREAT FIGHT.
We'll give you the exact directioj Captain so you can try it in the morning maybe with luck the gate will be open for you.
Happy Easter to all and may the Lord heap Blessings upon all us fishermen, he has for me and he can for you.

Are you getting that google ad between our posts?
Google Ads
As many have saw, the BOC now runs Google Ads. The main reason is to turn the BOC into a more revenue producing entity by 2008.
Ads served by Google are text based and relate to the general topic(s) they appear in. Like everything else, they can easily be scrolled by like any other message.
This is like Las Vegas, if you go, keep the secret to yourself. This test run will be tedious at first keeping the spammers at bay. It would be far to easy to jump a thread, and start a conversation, such as:
“Hey Guys, I was just on another thread and saw something mentioned about these slick new Silver Catfish Bulletts at . Please check them out and let me know what you think”?
But then again, its not like we dont cut tons of spam leads daily now

Hey Robb not much debris but strong currents and very high water levels hard to tell when the tide turned the water was so high. Just got off the phone with a buddy of mine he is nailing some halibut over in benicia
Robb I also asked him about the Blue cats and he said that WE HAVE THEM in the San Jauquin Valley here, they have been planted.
There are blues (they get huge) but I'm not sure about flathead.
Catfish are not native to California, so all of the species were planted at
some point. I think we have some 'Fishing in the City' programs that
stock isolated waters with catfish to provide additional fishing
opportunities, but catfish reproduce naturally in the Delta.

Probably so Robb DUH!:p theres alot of huge cats waiting ffor us to catch them in that spot man...................
Friday would be best for me, you do the scouting on Thursday and see what you find, maybe take Captain and go in the morning?
I'm either working in Merced this Saturday or i'm going up to Twain Hart to my Dads cabin for the weekend it's his Birthday Sunday and he wants to have a get together.
Guy told me today, out off Bass Ave he caught a 5 pound bass and lost something that looked like was in the 20 pound range striper and there catching alot of big catfish out there but he's a BS artist too but it was coincedence that he was out there on the same day we were. Said there were people fishing all over that area I told him we found our own personal honey hole LoL

Yep, I am game Thur to take anyone out there. I will scout around out there for sure. I believe there are some big fish in them canals. That canal we fished first, was Helm canal. That is the place were that 30+ lb. Stripe was caught. I believe with all the water flowing throught the system, it is bringing them big lunkers around. This is going to be a very good year down here.

Delta Mendota Canal and Slough
**Stripers **Catfish
The canal is a good bet for good numbers of stripers up to 11 pounds on white flukes fished behind gates where there's moving water. There is good catfishing, with one 25-pounder taken on a crawdad, Larry Bristow said. The area where the San Joaquin and the Merced rivers join is kicking out large stripers.

Just got back right now. Did a lot of scouting. The gate was locked. Swooped over to Helm canal. @ guys were there. They had 2 stipers measured at 24 and 29. 24 was caught on top water broken back repala. 29 was caught on large minnow. I then went to the slough. Several people with fish The pump ic running at our gathering site. I fisahed down from it. Got some good bites. It was about 10 or 11 am. An old couple left our spot with 3 stripers and 4 cats. Been there since Wed night around 6 pm. Same scenario like the gathering last year but very nice weather:) The fish are bitting. Fishe for 2 hours. Went down San Mateo. I found the back gate to that spot. Big NO TRESPASSING sign. That is the back way though. Gonna fish hard tomorrow. Anyone wanting to hook up? I may go out there first light. Fishetill real late or all night.
All I can say is thats F'n WRONG for them to keep us out of that river Like Kevin said the other day Robb we gotta find a way

That area is the Dept. of Reclamation. You wanna try back there tomorrow? I can get us there. The spot is not private. It is the Dept. of Reclamation. It's just getting there, which I know a way. Also, there is the spot next to the Helm canal. Remeber that ol guy frank said, "fish there at night in the shallows". We got to walk 30-40 yards. No biggie,,, We can fish those canals bro...... BIG STRIPERS!!!!!!!!!!!Seriously. That one bend on that Helm canal. Heck, The Delta Mendota holds big stripers.

Hey Cliffey there are tons of good spots just east of you I'll give you a few easy spots to locate. Go east on 580 till you hit tracey blvd. go north if I remember correctly thats hwy 12 go north till you hit grimes road anywhere along that road or that area in general is good for cats right now there may even be some stripers at grimes. If you continue to go north on 12 you will hit trapper slough go east again and make a left when you see the bacon island turn off it will be your first left follow that road till you hit a bridge that will be bacon island good for stripers there and good for cats just before the bridge. Next time I go out and have enough notice I will let you know I usually just go when I get withdraws.

Hey Steve.
A 20 inch striper aint bad.
Yea, that was fun in the current. Took most of my line downstream. Lots of brush and big piles of weeds flowing by, hitting my lines so it was hard to tell when there was a bite. A bass boat came by and the wake made an overflow over the bank. Nearly floated my bucket off. Where I was fishing the current was in a big circle so I just used a 1 oz weight and let it drift round and round. I had clams, liver and chovies. Got bites on all three.
Love to hook a nice stripper like that, yet to happen
Robb I lost my cell phone so can't call I jst got home a bit a go and i'm BURNT OUT TIRED.....no fishy tonight for me.

I'm headed to Daly city in a few weeks hoping to fish either the Bay for sharks or SPBay
Hey Vini if you come down here give me a buzz before you come maybe we can hook up. If you go to Daly City go to the Pacifica pier they are hitting stripers out there. If you want some sharks and stuck on land try Crissy Field in S.F. Robb has my contact info hit me up maybe we can go out and wet a line.

Anyone else want to catch some nice cats and stripers let's do it!!!!
Did you make it out this weekend? I went to the Mendota reserve this morning and caught a 22" striper and a little channel, both on anchovies.
