Well, if you got BIG flatheads with the outfit in your avatar, you wouldn't be able to use it for bass fishing again. LOL

I am new to this as well. My first post to date. I love to catfish and I just got a new ambassaduer 6600 c3 to help me with my luck for finding the big ones. I usually end up catching little ones but hope to get a big one here soon. Any one here know how to use the clicker on this reel? Do I leave it in freespool or locked? Oh and anyone ever fished Washington for cats cause I'm having trouble here. Think it's too cold or something. Thanks for reading my post.

That's what I thought. It's the only thing that made sense when I was messing with my reel. If the spool was locked with clicker on I had to decrease the drag too much. Thanks for the advise.

Welcome to the greatest site on the net. I too have landed some nice cats on crank baits. Flats are voracious predators and a wounded fish looking bait would suit them fine. Hpe you enjoy your stay and good luck with the bass thing.

That's the way I do it. I leave the reel engaged and turn on the clicker. I loosen the drag until the spool will give with a modest amount of pressure. When a fish hits and starts pulling line off the spool, I grab the rod out of the holder, put my thumb on the spool to stop/slow the line from coming off, and start tightening the drag. I use circle hooks so usually the fish has already hooked itself. It will work both ways. The reason that I don't like to leave the reel in freespool is that a strong hit/run may cause overrun and I don't think there is enough resistance from just the clicker to set the hook using circles. That's just the way I see it. If it works for you, by all means do it!
Welcome to the BOC! Everyone here is willing to give ideas and tips about what works for them. Ask and you shall receive...:)

thanks for the welcomes, sorry, but there is a lot more money in bass fishing tournaments, so that is what i gotta stick to for the financial end of things, i guess the money i make i can start investing in catfish equipment though.
Last year in a tourney on smithville lake, my first cast, i was using a buzzbait over submerged grass, and had about a 10 pound channel cat blow up on it, that was super exciting, i did not know catfish would hit topwater lures.

I bet you thought you had that tournament locked up on the first cast..............did your heart sink just a little when you saw those beautiful whiskers;)
I used to fish for whites on a hump at Perry and man we would knock the crap out of nice cats on Rattle traps. What was odd is that we would go back at night with the "real" cat tackle and never get a hit. A day time spot I guess.
Hmmmm, next cat tournament is at Perry, maybe I better go try and find that hump again:)
