The delaware was not moving, but the water level had risen some.
I was using fresh shad I caught that morning, and wicked sticky and
live minnows. Caught one on a live minnow, all the others where caught
on the shad.

did you have any problem finding shad?this weekend will be the first time my cat rods have got wet since last year and im looking forward to it.did you see anyone else catfishing?were you drifting?

Throw your net directly under the 92 bridge, it is loaded with shad
right now. Then head to the grass marsh to the north of the bridge,
that is where they are at this time of year.

shad must stay under that bridge.i caught alot of crappie this winter just fishing wherever the shad were under the bridge and along that south bank.i did real well last year drifting that shallower water north of the marsh for cats.we could barely keep 2 poles in the water!hey bro thanks for the heads up.thats gonna keep me from guessing and thinking about where i should start this weekend.are you gonna make it back out there this weekend?

I'll probably head up there again this weekend as long as the weather holds up and it's not to windy. I had thought about drifting that flat north of the marsh that you are talking about last week but called it off when I started catching them near the grass. I will try that next time I am up there.

Needless to say, fishoutloud and myself did not win:cool:

I'd be interested in knowing exacting where they caught those 10. I was
out there last week and got skunked. I had been doing pretty well there
up until then. I also had a hard time finding shad last week, caught a few up shallow, which is kind of unusual. Usually this time of year I can easly get all the shad I need under the bridges.

04-25-2006, 04:04 PM
I prefished Perry twice that week and never caught a single shad, probably threw the net a couple hundred time(under the bridge also). Had to get my bait on Clinton and then only 7 big shad(one at a time). The area and depth you spoke about in an earlier post is right on the money. There were to bites, one early and one late..........nothing inbetween!!

Fishing at perry today was terrible.we were on the water at 7 and off by 5 with 1 4#er in the boat.not sure whether its because the lake is dropping or the cool weather but it was a LONG DAY for 1 fish.:sad2: i sure hope things change for the best.there is an ACATS tournament this weekend saturday the 13th 7am to 4 pm if anyone is interested in joining.anyone interested should contact Steve French (tackleman).i hope to meet some of you there:smile2:

Did catch some shad in the spillway, but as I always say...........ain't no fish worth my life so the boat never left the trailer!!! The waves were large, to say the least. May go hit the Kaw after I work in the garden and mow the lawn, exciting huh.

Sure wish the tournament was today, put 7 fish in the boat.............I'm guessing right at 50lb's worth:ooooh: Had a double, a 9 then a 10 in the boat at the same time(put them on the scale). I'll probably get skunked tomorrow.
All fish on fresh shad, most caught in about a foot and a half of water. Missed 5 fish with circles, zero misses with the kahle's...........guess what I'm using tomorrow:angry:

Charlie - Iam new to this forum, I see you live around Lawrence. Have you done any fishing lately in Clinton????
On the Perry Lake Catfish your catching now... north of 92???
This wind is to hard on this old man, trying to handle the boat without tearing up all the equipment... I guess it's always best to fish with someone when the wind is up....
I would really like to get up to one of your gatherings and meet some of the men fishing for whiskers....

Welcome John. I haven't fished Clinton in a couple of weeks, then it was for crappie. I'll eventually make my way up there, but think I'll wait for 75 degree's and sunny with little wind.............I'm figuring August:angry: The Corp. is planning on maintaining Clinton at 877.5' for the rest of the summer so the willows should be flooded, good place to catch a limit of eaters.
Yes the fish were caught north of 92 and not in the river, that should narrow down the search a bunch. The wind made the boat ride very rough, but we were mostly anchored out of the wind so it wasn't to bad.
Got a month before the next tournament so it's a chance to fish the river around here a bit.

Could some of you experts please advise this old man. I have always fished with dough bait and treble hooks. Now I am looking at this forum and wonder how you fish the SHAD. and how you hook them. What type hook do you use??? Will the dead one's work as well??
I know these are stupid questions from a 64 year old man... I should know this by now.... but don't..
So any help in this SHAD BAIT FIELD would be appreciated.
Thank You John H

Thank You John Hwell john first of all welcome to the BOC and on this site no question is a stupid question so feel free to ask whatever you want and you will be surprised on how many good responses you get.i am not an expert by any means, but to start off youre gonna have to find a casting net in order to catch shad.depending on what size of fish you are targeting will depend on what size of shad you use.some people cut them up into chunks or fillet the sides.others may use whole shad.it just depends on what size of catfish you are after.you can fish shad whichever way you prefer whether it be drifting, anchoring,or even on a bobber.and yes dead shad work well.they are hard to keep alive so try to keep them on ice.the fresher the better.i prefer either circle hooks or khale hooks for cut shad.:0a26: welcome once again:big_smile:

MANDINGO - Thanks for the reply. I wrote it all down, have to or will forget it..
Looking to try Perry this week with a friend to help should the wind come up.
I admire the guys on this forum, they don't mind letting a guy know where they might catch a few.
Most forums, would not give anyone this information.
I RESPECT THAT!!!!

John
last saturday we were fishing perry with just cut shad. Nothing fancy, just chunk it up, and put it on the hook. Just be sure to leave a lot of metal showing, you dont want the point in the shad. If you cover the points like you would do with dough bait, you will miss most fish. Good luck!

Went to Perry this morning(early) to do some trolling and casting for whitebass, the whites were OK but I went way multi-species!!
I caught whitebass, largemouth bass, crappie, drum, sauger, channel cat, gar, and walleye. 8 species in one trip, maybe a personal best.
Anyone else ever had one of those "everything but the kitchen sink" trips???

That's a pretty good day Charlie. I caught four species of catfish in the same day once. I guess if you count the species of perch I used for bait I might have had eight. You had a busy day to get all of those on pole and line.

Perry Lake to make releases in support of navigation
Kansas City Mo. – Patrons of Perry Lake can expect lower lake levels as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases water from the lake to support navigational flows on the Missouri River.
The additional releases from Perry Lake began July 7. Corps experts say lake levels could drop up to two inches each day as a result. Releases to support navigation also may lower levels of Milford and Tuttle Creek lakes by as much as two feet.
Looks like fishing on these lakes is going to greatly affected by this release. Perry lake is said to could possible go to 6 feet below normal pool by the time this release of water is all done. The entire story can be found

BOOOOOO!!!!
This amazes me! A lot of folks pay a lot of money to fish at Kansas Lakes.
I know quite a few who pretty much camp year around on Perry and Clinton!
Tons of people have purchased the yearly fee!
How can they justify this action on a river that is used by other states?
Where is their contribution?
What about the community's around the lakes?
Seems to me that keeping stinking sand barges going is more important than the health of the lakes that we all pay for!

Perry Lake to make releases in support of navigation
KANSAS CITY, Mo.
About one sixth of Perry Lake’s normal pool is used by the state for water supply, mainly for Valley Falls and downstream communities like Lawrence and Shawnee. The supplemental releases now being made for navigation will not affect the water supply portion of the pool.
As lake levels fall, the Corps cautions boaters to be aware that some parts of the lake, especially the upstream end, become too shallow for safe access. Boaters should be aware of exposed rocks and stumps, and boat owners who have watercraft with deep drafts should contact their marinas to see if their boats should be removed from the lake.
The releases from Perry Lake are part of a broader river system operation. Milford and Tuttle Creek lakes are also providing releases to meet the downstream targets.
Perry Lake is currently at an elevation of 892 feet, about six inches higher than its normal multipurpose pool elevation of 891.5 feet. Based on current estimates the lake would reach its multipurpose pool elevation about July 17. Corps experts say that, given a “worst case” estimation, Perry Lake will fall another three feet, to 888.5 by the last week of July.
As in years past, lake levels may continue to fall as releases for water supply and other uses continue throughout the rest of the year. In 2002, releases brought the lake’s elevation to 885 feet, six feet below its multipurpose pool level.
Like all Corps lakes, Perry Lake has several missions. During wet years, its primary benefit is derived from flood control, and during normal years ideal conditions can be provided for recreation and fish and wildlife. In dry years, the USACE operating plan puts a higher emphasis on navigation and water supply.
Drought conditions now exist across most of the Missouri River basin, particularly in Kansas and Missouri. The total lake inflow to Perry Lake in June was the second lowest on record for the month. It was the lowest on record at Milford and Clinton lakes, as well as at many federal lakes in central and western Kansas. On July 9, Waconda Lake west of Concordia fell to a new all-time record low pool elevation.
The Corps ensures that the Missouri River flows are maintained at a minimum level of 35,000 cubic feet per second needed by towboats and barges operating on the river below Kansas City.
The operation of the Kansas lakes and the Missouri River is in accordance with Congressional authorizations, the approved lake regulation manuals, and the Annual Operating Plan for 2006.

Oh horray. Lets let them take our water so the stinking sand barges can make it up the river! I think people should maybe...learn to live with what nature hands them? I like that lake. They dont need to lower the water level any more than what it is now.

This is my first year at Perry - I have been out of town for two weeks until today - and after reading that article am thinkin maybe should go check on the old toon????
Was just starting to find the cattys before I left - is this level drop going to slow the fish way down or just move 'em??????
Either way it is sure to slow the jet ski traffic and that is always a good thing - those guys are nutz!!!
Is the spillway fishable?Never been there, but some nice cats should be stacking up by the dam.Anyone fish it?

Yes it is fishable. There are alot of big bulders you have to maneuver over. Which can be abit of a pain. You can also fish from above where most people fish but you can't pull anything big up the wall. I've fished the Spillway there several times with nothing to show for it. But I have seen some big cats come from there. Good luck!

I went to Lake Perry yesterday with a friend to get educated in "beaning". We started fishing at daybreak and both had limits (10 each) before 10 am. Smallest fish kept was 1 1/2 lb, but had many over 3 lb and two over 4 lb (4.5 and 4.7). Caught on light/ultralight in about 22-25 ft on the edge of the old river channel in the Slough Creek ramp area.
Good fishing. 8 to 10 boats stacked up in the same area, though.
