Best channel cat fishing I have ever done has been at Gardner lake.
Although you can catch some real nice ones anywhere on the lake,
it is this time of year that you can really clean up.
Next time it rains, head for the bridge that goes over the feeder creek.
Fish towards the lake in the ripples.
Catfish will be stacked up there BIG TIME.

Hey, are you eating those fish?
I used to live on Gardner lake and at that time (15 years ago), the catfish were very very clean.
I was wondering how they are now.
Also, it seemed the meat was a bit sweater then from other lakes.
How are they?

I'm curious how Gardner Lake compares to Cedar Lake on Lone Elm road in Olathe. I have fished Cedar Lake but haven't fished Gardner yet but am planning on checking it out. Cedar Lake is a trolling motor only and was woundering if Gardner Lake was trolling motor also.
Thanks
This make the fourth post now with 6 more I'll be able to check you alls pictures.

Dude, there is no comparison.
Gardner Lake HANDS DOWN.
For that matter, Olathe Lake is WAY better.
Cedar Creek starts at Cedar Lake and feeds Olathe Lake.
With that short dam, a lot of fish end up in the creek and finally in Olathe Lake.
Cedar Lake was good a LONG time ago before it silted in. It had a lot of large channels and lots of flathead. I have not heard of a flathead coming out of there since the early 80's, but lots coming out of Olathe Lake.
I would go so far to say that Water Works is better than Cedar Lake.
I think you can use your motor on Gardner lake but no wake just like Olathe Lake.
Pack your gear and find a new lake..... where the homophobes go to fish.

I tried gardner lake on saturday, I did'nt catch anything but had a few hits. The wind was blowing way to hard. I was really impressed with the lake, it's gorgeous. I did manage to get a few shad and bluegill with my throw net though, which I used at the river on sunday. I definetely plan on fishing that lake some more it's really nice.

I've been catfishing gardner for about 3 years and have caught some really nice cats out of it. The lake really suprised me at first not knowing the size catfish that are in it. I usually do best with live shad or sides in the deeper parts of the lake but have had trouble getting shad so far this year. I'm going out there one night this weekend, it should be good fishing. Good luck!

ill be out there friday close to the dock i drive a black s-10 come over and chat
Kept a nine pounder and a seven pounder.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f126/PB-LBM/140_4024.jpg
Released three others around eighteen to twenty inches long. Had to break off one that had wrapped in the feeder anchor chain. All were caught with a 10 ft crappie pole using braided line with a circle hook and a small splitshot. Bait was cut up brim.
Have been struggling at Louisburg Middle Creek this year only catching just legal 15 inchers. At Louisburg I have caught fifteen pounders and released several that fell within in my ten pound or greator release rule.
Anyhow had a good day at Gardner and hopefully looking for days to invoke my ten pound or greater release rule.

i fish there alot near the dock is the best spot for channels i think since there so many fish in one area the feeder goes off a 2 they move up the shelf between 9 and 4am the little one awalys come frist around 9 to 10 and then there daddys start moveing in the best bait to use out there is turkey or chicken livers magic bait lol, from the left of the feeder to the rock point is the spot about ten feet b4 or after it is best 7-01 to 7-02am i had really good luck again thur fri sat all three days i caught about 40 channels cupple of dinks too but i hope this helps put anyone intrested in gardner lake
I caught this 23 inch channel at Gardener that had broken loose from a metal fish stringer with the metal clip still in its lower jaw. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f126/PB-LBM/140_4026.jpg
Do any of you Gardener fisher folks recognize this fish.:smile2:
I removed the clip and turned him loose so he is still out there to be reclaimed if you want to catch him again. He sure ain't hook shy.
My second time on Gardener and I just had a hoot today. This sure is a gem of a fishing lake. Caught 19 total legals and even caught a 11" crappie. May have to see if I can pick up some crappie out there one of these days. Of the 19 channel caught six were weighed at 7.0#, 6.7#, 9.15#, 8.3#, 8.12# & 13.1# and 13 of the channel measured from 17" to 24 inches. Here is the picture of the 13 pounder http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f126/PB-LBM/140_4027.jpg. I kept a 7 pounder and a 23 incher for supper.
I observed something today that I have seen with white bass and black bass before and didn't realize that channel would follow another hooked channel to the surface as I played a 23 inch channel. When I first saw this I thought it was just the shadow of the hooked fish but it was another channel following and it was as big as the one that was hooked.
All these were caught with using my 10 ft crappie pole using braided line a circle hook and a small split shot. Bait was cut up brim.
If I keep hanging out around this board maybe I can learn how the real catfisher folks catch fish with out having to depend on hanging around fish feeders to catch my fish.

Left the lake around 10 am after the fish quite playing with me.
Left the house this am planning on checking out Olathe Lake. Found the gate closed to the ramp at 5:30 am so I went over to Gardner instead. I sure like to be on the water at daylight and in this heat I just don't care about being on the water after 10:30am. Will have to call Olathe and find out just when they open the gate to the ramp.
Todays report on Gardner is six legal channel:
1 23" 7:13am
2 24" 7:34am
3 20" 7:49am
4 11# 8:13am
5 11#6oz 8:34am
6 11#1oz 8:44am
Broke a 18incher off at the boat by trying to lift if with the line into the boat. Also caught a 9 inch crappie and one short channel. All the legal channel today were released to bite another day. Had to cut the line on a couple of fish since they were gullet hooked. So if anyone catches these fish with a circle hook in their throat it might be me that caught them before.
The fishfeeder appeared to be empty on Tuesday the 11th and no feed discharge was observed while I was there. As I was leaving the water Tuesday I saw a couple of fellows with KDWP launching their boat and I assumed they were there to fill the fishfeeder. Well the old tidbit about assumptions was true in that the feeder was still empty today and no feed was discharged today. Wounder if the State is running out of money for fish feed.
Saw a couple of ladies back their car onto the ramp and take a maybe 12 - 15 pounder out of their trunk with a dip net and release it in the lake. They had picked it up in the spillway below the lake.

Hey LBM what are you using for bait? Me and a buddy may go out there Friday night and was wondering what was working for you?
Hey LBM what are you using for bait? Me and a buddy may go out there Friday night and was wondering what was working for you?
I have been catching the sunfish, bluegill, perch or whatever will bite, around the dock and the water willows around and next to the shore. I have been using a tiny hook and split shot under a slip bobber to catch bait. One worm is all it has been taking to catch my bait. Starting from the worms tail I just cut at the most 1/4 inch of worm to put on the hook. Before using the worm up I usually have all the bait I need. Just catching the bait is enjoyable for me. If I don't catch any catfish and someone ask me if I caught any fish today I can usually say I caught plenty of bait.
I have just been using the filets cut off the brim. At other times I have used the heads or the tails or a whole brim if its only a couple inches long. I have been chumming around the feeder with the fileted fish carcasses.
If I was fishing from shore I would experiment with a slip bobber and try various depths off of the bottom. I would try using smaller split shot to allow for the bait to slowly fall through the water column around the feeder. Its maybe 12 ft deep on the shore side of the feeder and 24 ft on the lake side of the feeder. I would also keep a bait on the bottom with one rod.
Anyhow good luck and looking forward to reading the postings of your results.

I've never heard of this lake, I guess I gotta find it.
Jason
I think the important thing to key on here is "fish feeders" and not so much the lake. I'm not sure this (fishing fish feeders) is the stratagy to catch big fish but can sure be a hoot at times. If the fish are around the feeders they are in the kitchen looking to eat.
The KDWP maintains many fish feeders around the state and mentions them in their fishing reports on the net for the various bodies of water. In my case I have found the state Fisheries Biologist a good source of info. All the Fisheries Biologists names and phone numbers are listed in the Kansas Fishing Reqs booklet which can also be viewed on the net with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
I have found some of the Biologists quite personable and interested in discussing the feeders they maintain and my reports on results after fishing the feeders.
From the KDWP website I see that the Region #4 the Whicita area lists several places where the feeders are maintained.
Everynow and then depending on the lake you might hook into a large carp while fishing the feeders. They may be trash fish but can sure be fun once hooked. I found that using worms around the feeders the small fish pestered you more and you had a better chance at hooking a carp if they were around. You still might hook a carp using small pieces of cut bait.
Anyhow enough ramblings and good luck in the search.

Where to go fishing tomorrow. Was considering Olathe Lake but now tending towards Gardner.
Wounder if that dead channel was the one those two ladies released that they had brought back from the spillway. It didn't look like a 30 lber to me when it was released Thursday but it might have looked like a 30 lber by Saturday in this heat.

Chris,
With all the hot fishing at Gardner, I sure wish I could get out there with you Thursday night. I'll be jealous of you, though, and hope you catch some big'uns !!
A buddy and I took off last Friday and went out real early morning. Got there when it was still dark out. We were all ready to start catching 'em when the big rainstorm moved in, and, man were we soaked !!! When the rain finally let up, we had to go home and dry off. Came back later and caught a bunch of bluegill (probably caught over 50 total, kept and filleted 22) during the day.
Sad part was when the rain let up and we pulled out that morning we looked over and saw the "Do Not tie boats to the fish feeder" on the other side of the feeder. While we hadn't "tied on", we had set a small anchor on one corner from one end of our boat. I'm sure everybody else there probably thought we were either idiots or lawless jerks ! The truth is we had launched after dark and were fishing off the side of the feeder away from the sign and never saw it until later on when it got light !! That won't happen again !
Hope to get out there again soon and I'll be anxious to hear how you do Thursday night.
I was out there last Friday too. Yes your statement was exactly right. I was really questioning some ones intellect then figured maybe they couldn't read. I was ticked off enough that I put off posting anything here for fear I would regret what I might have posted.
I was also out there Monday the 17th and that 'Do not tie' notice was not on the feeder then. There was an inflatable that had tied up to it that morning. I left the feeder and bass fished the dam until they left the feeder. The KDWP had just put that sign up, that very week, then I see some one with their anchor on the feeder float didn't engender good Karma on my part.
I went back out this am thinking that if someone was tied up to the feeder I would just go over to Olathe Lake and check it out. Had it all to myself except for three shore fishermen. Instead of fishing 360 deg around the feed I only fished 180 deg leaving the shore side of the feeder for them.
I was intending to keep a couple of fish for the table today but the fish didn't cooperate with my plans. I did catch a 24 incher first thing and put it in the livewell. I was really wanting a 6 - 8 pounder to go along with him. The next eight fish caught were all legal from 18" - 21"'s and released. I kept releasing them hoping that I would get the 6 - 8 pounder. About 9:45 I caught my first short fish thinking that well guess the little ones have moved into the area thinking that now there won't be any larger ones now. The clouds had opened up and the sun was beating down and getting hotter. Figured I would be turning the 24 incher loose since I didn't think I wanted to dress just one fish.
By that time the shore fishermen had left so figured I would work around the feeder one more lap and then hang it up. On that lap I hooked and landed a 10 lb 5 oz fish. Since it fell into my ten pound rule I released it and spent another half hour trying to catch a 6 - 8 pounder. I didn't catch anymore so released the one in the livewell and called it a day. Now I will have to thaw fish for supper. Guess it really wasn't a bad fishing day at all.
BTW I was the one in the red lund tiller steer. As a fellow BOC members I know we'll meet on better terms next time and exchange cordial greetings then tell each other lies about our common interest in fishing.

Caught a 18.5 pound channel last night gardner lake miss around 4 or 5 biting really good on fresh cut bluegill. Also caught in the cast net a 2.5+ pound shad had a really nice fish on shad belly pocket his head was huge so if you have a net throw around the water bridge/road by the reeds. they are there but you might only get one like it did but it was like almost 16 inches long. Useing 10/o King Khale hooks so it was'nt to big of bait. Just thought I would let you guys know also if you want to see pics look at my gallery or New olathe kansas member tread.
Good luck fishing to all that go out tonight I will however I need some sleep Bait fishing wears me out lol.

Anybody catching anything this weekend?? I'm sure the weather (heat) is keeping a lot of people away from the water, just curious to know if anything is hitting anywhere.

I think I know who you are talking about. Shelby and I were out there the other day and they were there. They had surf rods set up all along the rail by the feeder and the floating dock. I can see the frustration, and they could be a little more considerate and maybe leave a little space for others. But on the other hand if they all have their license, then what can we say? It would be the same if any of us took a bunch of friends and had enough poles to fill the bank. I guess it goes back to the old saying about the early bird, If you get there before them they really cant ask you to leave and visa versa. 600, we may be out there either later this evening or tomorrow.

hopefully they won't be there this weekend, I told a buddy I would take him over there friday night or early sat morning. Was out on the river up from desoto a few weeks ago and caught 12 turtles in an hour and a half that was a record for me and one I didn't need to set.

sry i forgot no roll sinkers half the time i post its really late in the morn so sry my faithful gardner posters lol any news from gardner i havent fished it for 2 months or so
I fished it today from daylight till 10 am. Caught 5 - 14 to 15 inchers and one seven pounder. The lake sure hasen't been on for me as it was a couple times earlier this summer. Doubt if fishing would be as much fun if one always caught them in size and quantity.
My channel season is about to end and the winter crappie fishing will be firing up in a couple months.
