Ol Whiskers

Finally got out to fish today. Arrived below the Knightsbridge dam at 7:00, looking for smallies and saugeye. With the little bit of rain from last night, GMR was up abut a foot, not much current, and clarity was maybe 12 inches. Stream gage said water temp was 52 deg F. Wind south to west, maybe 3 to 5 mph, and cloudy. Air temp 50. Started throwing a 4" orange twister grub on 1/4-oz jig. Third cast, hooked up on a monster. About 20 minutes later, on 6-lb line, banked a 26-inch flathead.
CPR’d flathead, throwing same orange grub, 6 casts later hooked another monster. Battle again, and banked 27-inch flathead. This one was a little skinnier.
I’ve never caught flats in early April on the GMR, but hey, I’ll take ‘em. Snagged a 12-inch sucker, and a really nice crappie about 12 inches made a premature release right at my feet. Couldn’t buy a smallmouth, saugeye or walleye hit. Put out the Danny King Punch Bait about 8:30, and raised 6 channels, all less than 5 lbs.
Wind shifted north at 10 to 20 mph around 10:30, drizzle started, and only managed one last channel just before noon. It was a great day to be out.
