Nice fish Jim, they should fit the smoker nicely:)
You catch any of those on DK? Were they drift fish or anchored? Fishing was hard here yesterday and just trying to figure out what might be working. Thanks.

Thanks For Sharing The Picks With Us! As Soon As The Weather Cooperates With My Schedule, I Am Going To Make An Attempt To Catch And Photograph At Least A Minimum Of A 10 Lber. I Hope. Thats How I Started Off Last Year. There Is Plenty Of Fish That Size At My Local Honey Hole. Now That I Have Said It, I Have Probably Stuck My Foot In My Mouth. Lol. Keep Posting Those Catches! Picture Sure Have A Way Of Making The Story Much More Real.

Charlie, these were shore caught Cats. The wind was gusting up to 35+ so we decided to shore fish. Once the wind started dying down they just quit biting. We went back yesterday evening and it was fairly calm water all we caught was one. Yep, they're in the brine right now, they'll be smoking tomorrow, if it rains, if not, maybe the next day.

Thanks Jim. I wonder if the wind might have been part of my problem yesterday..............there was vey little(zero at times) wind here yesterday. The fish will hit, but I think they need a little pick me up to get the feed sack on.

Charlie, you're welcome. After tonight I don't know what to think. The wind blew real good, bout like the last time, gusting over 35. All we caught tonight were 5 "bait peckers" all under 2lbs(1.1,1.2 etc.) clipped and released them all. We were using the same bait, wind just as strong and from the same directilon. Had a lot of bites, missed a bunch, had a couple more on that got off, evidentally they were all dinks too, oh well, maybe next time.

Jim, good to hear you'll be here. Please give me a holler and maybe we can meet on the lake or at your place or mine. Make sure you get some shad guts, that's all we've been having any luck with at all. Went out tonight, only caught six, but they were all over 3lbs, 4 Blues and 2 Channels. It was right after that storm passed through.

04-07-2006, 03:01 AM
Me and the "Quiver" went out again tonight, (been going out just about every evening) and caught another nice bunch of eater's, big one tonight was a 4+ ChannelCat, and a bunch of 2 to 3's. We'll be out again tomorrow evening. We were doing real good right after the storm passed and the wind was still blowing, once the wind died, they quit biting. We got 8 this evening, about par for the last two weeks. I'll try to remember to take a pic of the stringer the next time, I'll take a pic of them on "the table" tomorrow morning fore we clean'em.
We've been shore fishing in the evenings. Most of them are caught on a home made dipbait or shad guts.

Eric, sorry I didn't get to read your post earlier, like last night;) There are quite a few good spots around the lake to shore fish. The main thing is to find a place you can get down to the water so the wind will be in your face. We've fished with the wind to our back a couple of times with little or no success. I've got a couple more pics I need to download from day before yesterday. Me and the Quiver (Jerald) have been having real good luck the past week with all this wind we've had. Next time you're heading for the lake, let me know a day or two ahead of time and I'll try to steer you to some spots.

Anyone know any good places to try in a boat or bank spots at milford?
Catfish Fever
05-05-2006, 02:27 AM
Josh, are you familiar with Milford Lake? If so, let me know, then I could give you some directions for both, by boat or shore. In March we caught over 200 lbs from shore, and April 170+ lbs, all but a few, due to the wind from shore. Nothing big though, biggest were only 5+ lbr's. If you're not familiar with the lake, let me know and send me your address and I'll send you a map with some places we caught fish marked on it.

Jim,
No unforuntely I am not very familar with the lake. 2 years ago I went out with my dad walleye fishing on it, that is about as far as my knowledge takes me. But, I'm pretty skilled with directions, and I know the general area, so any advice you have, would be more than appreciated.

if your fishing for cats the upper end around wakefield would be the best spot to start.....wether in a boat or on the bank both provide good fishing....

Eric,
Lately we've been having better luck farther South, below School Creek, and North of Curtiss Creek. We'd fished up by Wakefield pretty hard, both above and below the causeway without a lot of luck. Madison Creek area has given up a few big ones too. We've had some real good luck from the boat fishing the windy bluffs with dip bait, just eater size though, 3 to 5 lb'rs.

Went out Saturday and tried some luck on a buddys pontoon but didnt have any luck. We where trying to use liver but nothing even hit. I dont know but i think the cold front may have shut them down for awhile or at least i hope thats what it was i hope my fishing skills haven't gotten that bad :embarassed:. We tried a little back in curtis Creek, on the Northside of Curtis Creek, and then over by the bluffs with no luck...oh well better luck next time and good luck to you guys
Hey Catfish Fever do you have a pontoon that has three floats? and launch in Curtis Creek?
Catfish Fever
05-09-2006, 02:14 AM
Eric,
Nope, my Catoon only has two tubes, I do launch at the Curtis Creek boat ramp most of the time though, only five minutes from the ramp to the house.
We were out Saturday too, me and Jerald(Catfish Quiver). We started fishing on the West bank, just North of the CCrk camp ground. We fished the banks where the waves were breaking and caught 4 eater Channels, 2 and 3 lbr's. They finally quit there, the wind picked up, so we went back into CCrk cove, just past the boatramp and fished there for about 30 minutes, caught one BlueCat right off, 4.5lbs, then nothing so we went in about 7.

06-03-2006, 03:58 AM
Our best day this year, me and Jerald caught 20 Channels today, hmm, guess that'd be yesterday now, nothing big though, all in the 2 to 3 lb range, still, we had a good time. We put the anchor poles about 10 yards out from a bluff the wind was blowing into, about 3.5 feet of water. All were caught on dip bait, some home made, some commercial. Didn't take any pics of them while we bled them, I'll take some when I dump the on the cleaning table.

Catfish fever -
do you ever fish cut bait out there, or just dip bait? I was on perry last week and dip bait caught nothing in 8 hours, but the liver was catching them up to 6 pounds. also, how early in the year do you start using dip bait on milford? or is that your year round bait of choice?
thanks for any info.
Catfish Fever
06-08-2006, 03:16 AM
James,
Generally I drift cutbait, deep. Lately we've been fishing shallow with dip bait, anchored, just for quantity, need some for smoking and an upcoming fish fry. If you're catching fish with liver, I say just keep using that, specially if the dip ain't working. The next post has some limits we caught on 3 and 6 June, 20 each time. Most were just 2.5 to 3.5 lbs, we did get one 6lb'r though.

Catfish Fever, I think last year I saw you fishing Milford. I was out there wiper fishing with my dad and I think I saw you in a pontoon boat. I have heard the wiper fishing isn't doing too well this year. Two years ago, I caught a 13 pound wiper. I might go catfishing more there this year. I normally come during the fourth of July, but this year I will come back again I think mid-July. How do you think the fishing will be then? I can't wait to come back to Kansas, and all I do is fish. My grandma is in Chapman and I go to Milford every summer. Two years ago, I caught my first smallmouth (less than a pound) and one nice drum (4 pounds) on this dock near a boat ramp in a RV campsite (forgot name).

Kyle,
Nice to hear from you. When you're ready to come to Milford, send me a PM a couple of days ahead of time, I'll do my best to meet up with you when you get here. Maybe we can get out and fish together.
There's quite a few Toons on Milford, so, possibly you did see me out there.
I go to Chapman quite a bit, let me know your Grandma's name, it's possible I might know her.
It'd be great to take you out fishing with me.
The Wiper fishing is not as great this year as usual, but neither is the Catfishing. We do catch some every time we go out, just not in the size or numbers as years past. Thanks again for writing.

Aaron, Milford would be okay with me on those dates, wouldn't be able to make Marion though, my son will be arriving one of those days from Arkansas, for my birthday.
Jerald couldn't make Marion then either, he's got another wedding to go to back at his home town. We've been talking about going down there some time in July though, DEFINITELY not the 4 though! lol
Charlie (center12) said he'd like to come if it was one of his weekends off, so that's what we were going to do was go down on a weekend he could make it. I'm sure we could make it a weekend you both could make it, maybe Calvin, Geoff and Gary would be able to come too.
I don't know if you read the post I make about the camp ground down there, I can get a nice one, electric only though, for like $8.75 a day, I can have three tents and a camper on it. It's about 15 yards from the shore, where the Toon would be beached. There's a water hydrant and restroom right across the road.
Jerald and me will be going for sure some time in July, just don't know when for sure yet.
If you want to come to Milford on the dates you mentioned, let me know, theres a campground right where I live, if you came by your self and my son, daugter inlaw and grandson aren't here yet, I would put you up. Let me know, we'll sure get some fishing done.
Jerald and me had another 21 Catfish afternoon again today, didn't take but about 2.5 hours.
Glad you liked the Smoked Catfish, that's where most of the one's we're catching now will wind up.

Hey Catfish Fever, I know this is off-topic, but when I come to Kansas to fish Milford in mid-july, what is the best species to go after. I want to try to catch my favorites (wipers and cats) but what else is good? I remember at curtiss creek boat ramp there were alot of shad and fish (drum or white bass) were chasing them around as well as gar. Thanks.
Catfish Fever
06-14-2006, 02:48 AM
Kyle, there are also Whitebass, Large and Smallmouth bass, Walleye. I can't give you much help on anything but Catfish, as that is all I fish for. I do occassionally catch some Wipers while drifting shad for Catfish, biggest wiper is a 13+, see picture.
When you know for sure when you'll be coming and where you'll be staying, let me know and we can get together. If you'll be camping at Curtis Creek you'll drive right by my home on your way to the park.

Catfish Fever,
I will be staying with my grandma in Chapman with my dad. We take the two day trek by truck from North Carolina (stopping by a bass pro shops and cabelas along the way  ). I do know of the white bass. I caught about 16 of them on one night, along with a few goldeneyes. John Brady (a guide on Milford) was guiding for us (we don't bring a boat to Kansas) and he ran over to my side when I showed him the fish which he said was very good catfish bait. We stayed out in the dark for awhile until the bugs got so bad we went home. We managed to catch a few small blues. I caught my largest wiper (13 pounds) with Brady's guiding for us and he put me in his ad. We waited at Curtiss creek boat ramp cause that is where Brady lauches from. I caught two smallmouths and one drum from the floating dock. My dad isn't big on camping, so we won't stay at Curtiss Creek. I am only 14, so I do just about everything with my dad.

Kyle, John and his wife Judy are good friends of mine, she runs the gate here at Curtis Creek. I seen him today, he was cleaning some Wipers they caught today, all were over 10lbs. He said the caught 50 Wipers today that were over ten pounds. He's absolutely right about the goldeye for Catfish bait, that's about all we use when drifting for Catfish. I'll PM you my phone numbers so you can give me a call when you get here. Chapman's only about 12 miles from here. I'd be happy to take you out fishing. I have a copy of that flyer that John advertised with your picture.

Catfish Fever,
Are you kidding me, 50 wipers over #10! That's crazy! I hope it's still good when I come back! I'll talk to my dad to see when the exact days will be (might take a couple of days, he doesn't like to be rushed). I caught those goldeneye on a curlytail grub and also on the Double W Shad spoon Vic Oertle manufactures locally in KS (I think in Manhatten). I thought they were a trout or salmon at first (never caught one until last year). Once we have some plans done, I'll see if my father can give you a call, he knows the area and grew up in Chapman. You can't tell who I am in my avatar too much (pic washed out:angry: ), but I am the guy who blinked while Brady took the pic at his homequarters. Thanks again and hope to get back to you soon.

Jim,
I was wondering if there are any rental boats that are at Milford. If so, do you know if they have depthfinders? Thanks. I know good electronics are almost a must when you're out on Milford. I am also thinking about getting a submersible fishing light that attracts the shad. It is in another thread here on the BOC and people said that even though they are meant for crappie, they have got good luck using it for blues. Should also be good for white bass.
Catfish Fever
06-18-2006, 12:39 AM
Kyle, the only place I "believe" has rental boats, Toons I think, is at the Thunderbird Marina. Not sure though, haven't been there in awhile, I'll run by there tomorrow and check it out for you though. I'd be happy to take you and your Dad out one day while you're here though, wind permiting of course, if the lakes to rough, we can go shore fishing, I'll provide the bait, either way. We don't have any trouble netting shad during the day, can't say I've EVER heard of using lights to catch Bluecats(?). Not around here at least. Most times we just catch them drifting.

I have been out wiper fishing with a guide on Milford, and we used live shiners, perch (bluegill), and a bait called black salties. We did pretty good. Slowly (slowly is the key word) troll the baits. We set up multiple rods out in the holders with 1-3 ounce sinkers suspended off the bottom straight down. Jim mostly fishes for catfish, but he might know a few things about wipers as well. A couple of times, 3 rods would scream (line from the drag) off at one time once we hit a school. Also, keep your drag low, wipers are really tough fighters and run some. Wiper fishing is my favorite, tied with catfishing. Hopes this helps.

Chris, in addition to the baits Kyle mentioned, John uses fresh caught shad also. We've been catching some nice size shad, 3.5 to 4 inches. We've been using live fresh caught perch and catch a Wiper occasionally while drifting for Catfish.

Also, do wipers school?

You just have to cruise around till you mark them on your sonar and fish accordingly. Look for gulls feeding on shad schools is always a good locator.

We trolled around in 20-30 foot water. Wipers do school, and you can sometimes see them attack the shad on top. Fishing for attacking wipers/white bass is called jumpfishing, because you jump from school to school. Here on milford they don't stay up too long so you have to be quick. If you find a school around the surface just toss in a shad-imiataing lure and you should hook up.

Jerald (Catfish Quiver) and me have been doing fair to good lately in the evenings. We go out about 6(PM) and come in around midnight. Occasionally we'll land a 5 to 8 lbr. Mostly they're 2.5's to 4.5's. We haven't still fished the bluffs for eaters lately, the wind for drifting has just been to good. We caught14 last night, threw back 3 under 1.5 lbs. Caught'em on shrimp, goldeye, perch and cut shad.

Caleb, hate to break the news to you, you needed to fish here about 3-4 years ago if you wanted a really big Bluecat, or Channel too. The boys that fish up by Wakefield in the spring have caught and kept most of the big ones, I'm sure there's a few left, it's just a matter of being lucky enough to find a hungry one. By this time of the year I normally gave caught maybe 15 over 10 up to 20lbs, so far this year, only 4 between me and Jerald. They're just not here any more. In the past couple of weeks we've managed to catch couple in the 6 to 8lb range though. Send me a PM and I'll give you my phone number and I'll meet you on the lake, I'll give you as much good advice as I can. Jerald may not be there as he might go to a wedding this weekend.

I have not seen a fish out of Milford over 30 this year.Last year I caught and released 2 blues over 40.Two years ago there were set lines all over the north end of the lake, I don't see as many this year.It shows that a lake the size of Milford can be over fished. I took some pics of a 35lb Bluecat Dale caught today, up on the Northern end of the lake from the shore, just went by to visit with him, he had just finished pulling it in. After weighing and pics he was released. I have the pics sized and posted here tomorrow.

I've been trying to post the pictures of Dales Bluecat since the day before yesterday, first I tried posting all three, when that didn't work, I tried just posting one, still wouldn't up load, I know they're sized correctly, they're less than 500X400 and under 60mb. When it gets to the end of upload, I get the "white page" says it can't be found? I'll try again later.

Dale,
Yep, it was a good one, we also caught 4 smaller Blues and 2 Channels, we were just starting another drift when we got the SOS from Caleb(Mandingo). He was doing pretty good too. We did see some dead Cats though, a Flathead that probably went 40+ and a Blue the was around 15+. Friend of mine was up there Friday, he said there were a LOT of BIG dead Catfish and other species too. We had a big fish kill about a month ago, both happened right after a big rain. Something up the river must be washing in. It was reported the first time, evidently nothing was done though.

Caught the blue in my avitar Sunday night fishing on the cattoon with Jim, fish was 30 lbs caught on head half of a perch, my first one over 10 this year. It was a good night fishing, big fish and met another BOC member, Mandingo, can't beat that.

Jim and I were out last night we only got one, another blue on a perch (28lbs), drifting in 25 to 15ft of water. (Action on the other end of the boat needs to pick up soon before restrictions are imposed) just joking. Going to try and put a pic on.

Caleb, what do you mean leave some for you? He better let me catch one or I'll hide the bait on him, specially the perch:lol:
Well, at least you know there's at least three good ones out there. We were a little farther North when we caught this one.

Here's the pics I took last night, a full shot of Jerald, the cradle we use for weighing the bigger fish, I made it from a couple of pieces of broom stick, split open mesh laundry bag, couple pieces of rope. I tried to get a picture of Jerald releasing him, missed, only got the swirl, no second chances here.
