Hi Brian,
Sounds like you're getting rigged up nicely..
In the river, I prefer Kahles 7/0-10/0 or Octapus 7/0's, Depends on baitsize..and, personal preference..
Otherwise, just find a place you can access water, hopefully, a shallow to deep transition, inlet, structure, like boulders, wood, ,,anything the fish can hide around or in.
Live bait caught or bought, fresh cut, even nightcrawlers.. will get you a Flathead.
You can catch them in the main channel, eddies, backwaters, canals, drains, just about anywhere you can get a line cast into the water.. of course, some spots are better than others, and, you may end up with channel cats, or even a bass occasionally.
Bring your bugspray, and a bunch of water,, and Good Fishin'
Welcome to the BOC:big_smile:

Hey Brian.. If you fish in current your going to cross lines hehe.
If your fishing in that area make sure you cover up. The spray doesn't really do the whole job. I noticed last time I fished the lagoon that I got more runs on my poles that were out in the channel. I still place them all over but it is something I noted in my head. Good luck with those circles.. I find their better for release than catch and release lol. If you come through Blythe drop me a message ahead of time and we can do a meet and greet.
Oh another thing for the lagoons and drainage ditches. If you get pick ups but miss everytime even though they run off with it switch to some smaller baits. Remember if you have a line across the water from you or out in the middle they may very well come towards you or just move a little off to the side. You may just get a thump and some slack and never get the clicker going off. Not sure how to make cirlces work in that situation but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

You have a good point there Jag. The times I've used circles they've taken off with the bait, and hooked themselves. If they come in toward you with the bait I can see how that can be a problem. I like the circle hooks and have had some decent success with them, but they do have to run away with it to get em. I normally use kahles, but I like circles as well. I will bring both when I come down.

who knows if they work !! sometimes the dogg is a sucker on some of those info commercials on t.v. ..... i was telling Ray yesterday that i am pretty well set ! for this road trip ! now karen is starting to think that i won't be able to with-stand the 105 plus degree heat... for 4 days... she is going down to blythe tomorrow to her albertson's store....and she is going to stop by the holiday inn express and reserve me a room for friday & sat night....just in case the old bulldog can't hang.. i told her that was fine with me.... but just make sure you get the one with the jacuzzi tub in it. because i will probably need it !! hehehe
That is a good idea. Don't know if I'll get a room or not, but if it is 105+ the whole time I might. Hopefully dippin in the river and a couple cool showers will do the trick. I'm pretty much set to go too. Went out yesterday and got most everything I need. I have a couple minor things to iron out, but other than that ready to go "Do the Damn Th@ng"! Hopefully time flies the next two weeks. Time always seems to slow down when you're waitin on somethin.:sad2:

yea i hear ya bro.....it's like when i go to vegas.. i just don't sleep !...it's one big adrenalin rush...your excited & pumped up your on an natural high for a couple of days...but when you come down...... ya come down hard !!! at least i do... so for me having a room.... it's more for safety more then anything...ya got to do what ya got to do..... then when it's over......you still have to drive home...... think about it !!
That drive home is the killer. But sometimes that's part of having a good time. Ya gotta take the good with the bad. A room sounds good too. Either that or a good bar where I can go watch the playoffs(I'll be po'd if the Lakers aren't still in it) and have a couple cold ones or maybe a couple glasses of ice water.:smile2:
Oh yeah, change of plans. My buddy can't take off Thursday so I am not leaving here until 8:00pm Thurs, yes 8:00pm.:sad2: Won't arrive in Blythe until about 3:00am. Don't know where I'm going, hopefully I'll find your campsite. If I feel up to it I may stop and throw a line on the way down the 95 somewhere. I'll keep you posted on that. Will be there for Friday night and Saturday night fishin though.

Not a bad idea to have a room:wink: fish all night and sleep the day/morning away. Them thermacell's seem to work pretty good w/ some good bug spray:wink:. I will tell you something the skeeters are not near so bad fishing up by the dam away from the backwaters, skeeters are not that bad even at the Mayflower and north to the dam, not much of any stagnate water until your south/downriver of the I-10 bridge

It seems as the season progresses at the Blythe and Palo Verde area the crummier the gold fish gets in the local shops. It always best to at least get the Tilapia from the local holes if you can not get the gills. The tilapia normally is a easy catch in certain zones.
Sometimes if you arrive to the shops shortly after they get in a shipment you can get in on some decent goldies like on a Friday. As people buy them later through the week we are left with the leftovers others did not want. Good thing though is when we are holding an event we can contact B&B and special order a good shipment in. He comes thru in those endeavours.

thanx brian i have caght gils but never tilapia i hear they are hearty
do u hook bait down by the anal fin bottom or top have u used a two hook rig
bluehunter
05-23-2009, 12:04 PM
I hook them just like the gills anal fin top. They are hearty. Some of the ditches have good size ones almost like a gill. They are fiesty too. Last year all my good catches was made with a tilapia even the 42 pounder which I found out later hit a tilapia after looking thru its stomach contents - I do that sometimes to see what they been eating.
My 36 pounder last season also came on a tilapia. But dont get me wrong I caught a lot of flats on gills too last year. Last May with some past era associates we ran out of gills in a hr they were biting so well.
But when it comes to dinky goldfish and even the small Tilapia, I would take the small Tilapia because even most of them are bigger than the goldfish.
bluehunter
05-23-2009, 12:06 PM
hay brian..... how much do these goldfish cost ? i got my two areators the cheep one's from wal-mart !
thanks scott
B&B has a dozen at 10 dollars. Palo Verde has a dozen at 11 dollars. Not so bad for a back up plan. I always get goldfish as a back up even if I am day fishing I would use those and leave the bluegill and tilapia for the night bite.

bluehunter
05-23-2009, 11:07 PM
Look into that with the horsepower especially when going up river it may take you forever when the current is flowing. Jon boat are great river boats, but the hp is key on the boat. I fished with one guy a few years ago and it took us almost an hr to get to a spot that normally took 10 minutes in a 75hp boat. His HP was low as well.

I hear you. Motors are really expensive. If you are fishing areas not far from the launch or backwaters or areas away from the main current you will be cool. I was also looking into getting a Jon boat as I could fish the canal areas too in it and they can get to and out of spots that the average V boat can not do.
As far as the outfall I seen a few boats going up and down that stretch. Some bass fisherman and some flathead fisherman. You can get to some might good areas on that jon boat there thats not fished often or at all.

Thanks B. Take your time on the set ups no need of getting in a grind to get a boat. I know how it is and a lot of times I think I went overboard on the expenses that I ran into lately like spending 3300 lately on boat issues like getting the trailor fixed, boat seviced, new fish finder, new prop, gas pumped redone, bimini top, boat cover. Do it when you have the ability to do it because its no fun having a boat and not being able to take it out when you want to. Starting small is the right thing to do.
I got a report yesterday from the Alamo around the Calipatria area and the bite was on after a few minutes of soaking some bait so you may have a good spot there. 4-5 feet is deep enough my biggest came from about 5 feet of water. Just be careful no to spook the fish in that depth loud music, noise, and bright lights can affect the bite.

Yeah Brian I had fished Fri night with the family and had a good one.
http://www.catfish1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111791
Then Saturday Snagged2 came to town and I took care of some things. We met up Sat night at a drainage spot. Lots of runs no pick ups. Greg caught a 1.4 lb talapia before the sun went down and he was excited about that. I caught a channel maybe 5 lbs that I let go in the middle of the night. Then in the morning when reeling in Greg had a small flathead on. Sunday when I called you we had been hitting the drainage pipes and were really wooped from no sleep and the heat. We got one 9 lbr out and it has an adventure story attached to it that I'll post later. He fished last night and left me a message that he did decent.
P.S. For some reason I am missing the pics I took of greg in the morning. He should have some on his camera. The pics posted here are of both of us with the same fish because of the way it happened. Story later.

Had an interesting weekend,,,
Didn't get out Friday, But, Saturday, I drove over to the river,,, had been about a month since I'd been..
Set up on a drainage, and as Jag said, lots of clicks, no sets,, maybe little ones,, they seemed to be nervous about committing to eating the bait,, maybe, they were just taste testing..
I caught the biggest Tilapia I've ever seen,,, Decided he had work to do, so let him go.
Reeled in a 5# Flat in the morning,, Shown here with one of the Rods I build!
Then, we started doing tunnels,, we worked a couple of them to no avail,, and I do mean work,,The third Pic is Chris-JagDoctor, using a machete to clear a path down to a place that we can hopefully launch a "Tube Rat" into the conduit...He's in the picture,, has on a Red shirt..
Continued in next post,....
Snagged2
05-25-2009, 10:43 PM
We hit the third Tube, and , while we didn't have to clear a path,, the water was way up, and there was lot of current, creating quite a Whirlpool effect, and making it near impossible to position a bait to be pulled into the tube..
I was on one side of the bank, and Chris was on the other,, I'm not very good at pitching baits,, and ,, so, Chris launched his rig to my side, I attached my hook to that, and he reeled my stuff over , and tossed it into the right place in the whirlpool, and It went into the pipe..
I ended up hooking "something" and could not get it out,, so, having a dilema,, we conjured up a plan, and what we did was let the current carry the slack line out the other side of the tube, about 100 yards at least.. I went over to the outlet and dragged the line up,, then we rigged everything so as not to lose the fish, and went to the downstream side and got the fish end of the line, and cut it and tied it onto the reel we had just emptied, and pulled this Flathead IN..
So, this Flathead took- 2 Anglers, 3 rods and reels, and about 2+ hours to get him out!!!
The first pic is the upstream-launch side, the 2nd pic is Chris on the inlet side
It took both of us in concert to get this fish in...
The 3rd pic is the Outlet -downstream ,, where we pulled this fish out of...I just turned around and shot the pic,,

Memorial Day weekend, Sunday night,
I had some luck,, Set up on the Main channel,, and sent out some baits..
Caught the little channel on Cut bait, and the Flathead on a Goldfish!!
Got another little Flat, but, no pic..
The first night, the mosqitos weren't bad...
Sunday night, I couldn't keep them off me, and finally gave it up about 3 AM. Got in the truck and took a nap..

lol Your sneaky with that camera Greg. I didn't know you took that pic of me clearing that ditch.
You ought to see the high tech stuff we use to keep bait alive brian...
Well. it's complicated. First a 5 gallon bucket. Then a drill. Then another 5 gallon bucket.
Put the first bucket together with the drill and you get a holy bucket. Fill the other bucket with water put the holy bucket in the water... when you get to your spot take the holy bucket out put it on a rope and put it in the water... If your going to be in the vehicle for long use a bubbler and some ice. Oh... I'll give you the real neat part that we eventually came up with... if you only put holes in one side of the bucket you can pull it out withought getting your shoes and pants all soaked lol. Took us a year to get to that one lol. I also have a bucket lid with 1/4 inch hardware cloth (mesh screen) that allows the bucket to sink faster.

Brian, thanks for asking a question that I have been wanting to ask. My stepdad is giving me a 12 ft jonboat and I have been thinking that it was too small for the river. I was just planning on using it in the Sierra's butI am rethinking that. Now I just got to go pick it up in Colorado.

Hi Nightstalker,,
The boat will work fine in some areas,, and might make you nervous in others...
I've got a 16' v-hull aluminum fishing boat, with a 15 hp motor, and , have been ,,,,,,,,,, concerned, a couple of times...
But, I'm not real experienced with boats..
And, Welcome to the BOC!!:smile2:

By the way .. Brian. I didn't jump right on answering your post because I fish with such a motely crue of equipment. Alot of guys have alot of new gear and are very particular about what they use. Personally I find cheap/free stuff people arent' using and turn it into good gear. My latest and most awesome setup is an abu garcia 5600 that snagged2 built from the ground up for me with roller bearings and a clicker and smooth drag washers... he almost went poo when he saw how far and accurate I can cast with it. It's attached to a medium action ugly stick with 80 lb power pro braid. I have what I call the big rig. It's basically a solid fiberglass tuna stick with a deep sea penn reel on it. It's for putting out the largest bait I can find when they get real active. It has 50 lb big game on it.. which has impressed me alot. My other rig is a long flexible rod with a spincast reel... no idea on the brands it has 80 pd spiderwire stealth on it. I love that rig for versatillity. Then I have a channel cat setup and many light rigs for bluegill and such. Almost all came my way free. I use 2-6 ounce flat no roll sinkers and 7/0 or 10/0 king khales for hooks.

A lot of times its the bottom climate, flatheads are great camaflouge fish. Also it can be just the different shades of flats like you see with other cats. I seen flats out of the Palo verde canal like that and also the All American Canal. At the last event we had one flathead that was yellow(from the AAC) pretty much while the Alamo flathead was dark. I dont think there is much too it. You can see that all over were flatheads roam some being darker shades and some lighter. There may be a science to that between males and female or even spawning season flats as far as I am concerned. Some research has to develop with that. It may occur more during the spring the most often with the lighter shades.

Right now it looks like I may not get there until sometime Friday.
The young man that is going to ride with me says he should work Thursday although he's tells me they have very little work to split among all the plumbers.
When I was working there I always told them to let me know when things got slack and I'd take a day or two to go fishing.
There are certain advantages to not having any debts or responsibilities.
