I guess this is welcome to the new site. Lots of history is at the previous one and hopefully we'll catch enough fish to fill this one up also. Please, anyone in the BR area who fishes the Mississippi River and surrounding areas please keep in touch. I was just getting close to royalty at the old site. I guess this is progress. Hopefully the fishing will pick up as the weather gets a little better. I think those folks in Greenville MS are catching all the fish before they can get down here! We'll keep trying. :grin-big:

Well i made it to the site also, I have now started and school and i don't have the problem of too much time on my hands now though. Well keep me posted and how the fishing is going and if you don't have a partner one weekend let me know and maybe i can get free and go. Well I will talk to ya'll later

Hope everyone made it through the storm safe. Let me know how ya'll are doing, me and conan got our power back yesterday. We were one of the lucky ones I guess.

We got our power back this afternoon. We were sure lucky, judging on how bad the poor folks in NO go hit. My son made it here. Most likely his place is trashed, but that can be replaced (he rents!) I feel so sorry for all the refugees here. I don't know what I'd do if I was in their shoes. Just to get a contractor to fix a place with 10's of thousands of other needing help would be a challenge in itself. They all need our prayers.
bself
08-31-2005, 01:56 AM
yeah it is real bad there, we got our electricity back last night and we were even luck out of the ones here in baton rouge. It will be a long time before it is the same there but i am so glad that they are receiving a lot of help in trying to get this reconciled. I really don't understand the looters though, i can understand if you are starving and need food but if you are just looting for stuff you don' t absolutely have to have i think that is one of the worst things someone can do. the store owners are not even there to protect their stuff. Well i could go on for a while about that topic. Its sick!!!!!! Well anyway good to hear you have power now and all is well with your family. You are right material things can be replaced!!!

I drove out to the levee this afternoon on the way to volunteer at Lamar Dixon for all the pet flood victims. There were 100s of dogs and cats there and they needed help to keep them clean, watered and fed. It is a major activity out there. There are humane societies from Connecticut, LA and all over the country helping with the effort. Unfortunately I could not stay there long. I really need to go back and assist.
I did see where we put in and it was clear. In fact the levee had been reworked to make putting in and getting out easier than the recent past. They were very busy, but not with cargoes that fish eat, unless they have a hankering for concrete or scrap iron. Apparently the NO port being out of commission has helped up here. Maybe we can give it a shot this next weekend. What you think?
bself
09-15-2005, 09:13 PM
sorry i haven't been checking this very regularly, i have been very busy with school, i have 3 test next week. i have also helped out at lamar as much as i can, we got tons of food donated for the horses and dogs. I have mainly been helping w/ the horses though but any help they get really helps. I won't be able to go this weekend due to so many stinking test but maybe the next two weekends look more promiseing. If you everneed to let me know something important just shoot me and email. I always check it.

Glad you're doing ok. Worked a little bit at Lamar Dixon myself. That is really work. There are lots of really dedicated folks supporting that place. Good luck in school. Looks like Miss State could have another long season, huh.

Yeah at least they won the first one, did you go fishing today?
mullyden
09-18-2005, 05:47 PM
Conan, Scott, my youngest son and I went this morning. The water was so low we could not put it. A first!! We got the truck to the water and the boat would not float. The bottom was too flat. No way to get off the trailer. Pretty bad luck. The water had dropped about 4 ft since last Sunday, from ~ 11 to 6.3 ft in Baton Rouge. Kinda sucked.
bself
09-18-2005, 07:03 PM
yeah that does suck, i can't beleive you couldn't get the boat in but could still get the truck all the way down there. they must of done alot of work to the lauch. Well maybe the river will come up soon
mullyden
09-27-2005, 10:41 PM
My fridge crapped out today and can you believe Mary made me get rid of my remaining slicker and frozen liver to make room for food. Can you believe she'd do that to me? Oh well, it doesn't look like the river is going to get deep enough to fish in anyway for a while. :cursing:
bself
09-27-2005, 11:06 PM
that is pretty bad, no very bad. When is the river supposed to get back up anyway? Maybe soon it will be up far enough to fish. Did you survive the hurricane ok? We faired fine but starkville ms didn't. They had a couple of tornados come through and really tear some stuff up. A buddy of mine there said one missed his trailer by about 30 yards and flipped some over in his park. They didn't have any warning but no one was hurt either.
mullyden
10-02-2005, 12:01 AM
We need to get that river up and catch some fish. We also need a back up plan off the river so we don't sit on our butts instead of fish. Brad, I thought Miss State was gonna come out of their slump against LSU today by the way they started. Looks like they're still in it huh.
bself
10-03-2005, 12:33 AM
yeah they are still in there slump, they will pull out of it sometime though. They have already won as many as they did last year :) Isn't there a lake around here somewhere that has some good fishing. Maybe its time just to go explore and try some new things. ;)

After over 2 months we got back out on the river. It was great weather, the water was clear, but low, but the best part was the fish were biting pretty well. We ran out of worms and shrimp. We brought home 22 nice eaters, with average size being 2 lb. We had 7-8 4 lb fish. It was really a good time. We could see a filled tiger stadium in the background. I have attached a few pics to document the day.
bself
10-17-2005, 10:28 PM
hey looks like ya'll did real well, was it hard to get in the river this time? Well maybe they'll continue to bite like that for ya'll
mullyden
10-19-2005, 07:13 PM
It was not bad putting in or getting out. The river at BR was 5.4ft. It was right where the ramp stops and it seems like a blob a concrete starts. Don't know what it is like if it goes down any more. It is at 6 now but will be at 4.5 by weekend. We never seem to get a break. I'll probably go down there on the way home from work and see if I can figure out what is at the end of the ramp. The trip was lots of fun with great weather and lots of bites. Hard to beat that combo.
How is school going for you? Conan said he hasn't seen you much so I suppose you are pretty much working your butt off. If you can work a trip in, let us know.
Take care.

Where is everyone at now?? Everyone posts for a few days and then disappears!! Denny, this weather stinks!! But how is it for fishing. Like I said i have never sone any catfishing in cooler weather. Last year about this time you the river was well over 30 ft if I remember right. Has it risen any lately??
bself
11-19-2005, 10:53 AM
I think the fishing is supposed to be good in cooler weather, in two about two weeks i will be out of school and ready to get in on some action

Guys, I was wondering if either of you were still around. I went to Phoenix this past week to visit mom and most of the rest of the family. Even got in a little white bass fishing. It was lots of fun.
Fishing is usually fine nearly year round. Unfortunately, today the river is at 4.3ft, a ft lower that I've ever seen it. It is probably too low to put in even at Baton Rouge. A rise to about 9 ft is predicted by Friday, perfect for putting in at Baton Rouge. Brad, I called Conan about this but I saw someone with about 200 lb of cats come out there and the fishermen indicated that this is typical. I gotta go out and catch some this weekend. I'm off Fri too. Any takers? Conan, that's probably the busiest Target day of the year , huh. Anyway, let me know.

What, no updates?? Does that mean it was that bad??? Am I the "lucky" charm?? You know the last time Brad went with us we had a few issues. Does that mean he is the "bad luck" ??? I am beginning to see a pattern here.
Tell me what happened!!!!!!!
bself
11-27-2005, 06:49 PM
well we caught two fish, i caught a really small one and denny caught a 6.5 pounder. The fishing was really slow. Maybe denny will get the pics up soon

11-27-2005, 08:51 PM
Brad and I went out Saturday before the LSU game. I don't know why the fish weren't biting too well but we had a nice time anyway. We had beautiful weather out there but did have to stay alert for barge traffic. It was busy at times. Brad mentioned the couple of fish we brought home. We also caught a sturgeon. That was a piece of work. It was not possible to hold with the bare had because of it's many sharp "fins". It was truly prehistoric looking. Hopefully fishing overall will pick up some. Here are a few pics to remember the trip.
mullyden
11-27-2005, 08:54 PM
And by the way, Conan, there may be a pattern. We just have to keep ole Brad out there and work our way through it. I think the water level will stay up for a couple of weeks (low relative to history) and Brad will be off from school for a while. We'll get him back there. :D
CrawDaddy
11-27-2005, 09:18 PM
Well, too many slow trips with Brad, we may have to throw him over board and see if that helps!! Maybe he can find one of your lost anchors hehe.
Glad you guys at least made it out. Did you go to our normal launch or the one in BR??

What, play, "Go Fish"? Heck, maybe you are that good. You notice on TV, it's the same bunch of folks at the final table every show (give or take a little). That says that skill is a real factor, more so than luck in the long haul. :rock-big: You'd have to get you some shades like the little guy at the beginning of the sentence. You can do it.
Brad is off for a few weeks starting soon. Hopefully we can all get back on the river really soon. I forgot whether he's off starting this weekend or next, but I need to put that guy on some fish that bite and soon. He won't believe we have really caught some.
You, all take care. :0a23:

Just since it's been awhile since we got to go out. My weekend rotation is this coming weekend. As far as I know my rotation will stay the same thru Christmas. Hopefully my wife's will as well.
Just another thought Denny, if we can't put in sometimes then I'd be game for some golf. think it is time I got back into it!!

Also, got to tell you what happened to me today!! I just exited I-12 onto Millerville exit going to work this morning. Waiting at the light to turn left. Light turns green I start moving and then some guy in a F-150 comes barreling at me. I slammed on my brakes but caught the back right corner of his truck with the right front of the Camry.
He starts fishtailing hits the curb on the right exit onto Millerville, goes airborn, NEVER even hits the road, flies over the road and lands on the side of the road. His truck ended up landing in a draining ditch. Thankfully for him that was the only thing that kept him from rolling his truck all the way down the hill!! Scared the living daylights out of me!!

You'd better start changing your ways and start living a more wholesome life. Glad you weren't injured (I guess). Was the other guy ok? Sounds like you were both pretty lucky and he was kinda nuts. Did he have insurance?
Were you able to get you continue driving on to work? I know you wouldn't let anything like a car crash keep you from getting to work!! :D
Some days just start out pretty bad. Hopefully the rest of the day improved.

As far as I know she will be off as well. This weekend is a busy one though. We have company coming Saturday. Sunday is a HUGE day for me. 1st they are showing the Cowboy game on TV.YEAH!!!!! And tonight I played in a poker qualifier tournament. And I made it ( had to make top 4 out of 53 players ) . So Sunday night I am playing in a tournament that I could win a $11,000 seat at the 2006 World Series of Poker Main event!!!!! That would be a nice thing for me :) Wish me luck!!!!!

Didn't do so well in the big tourney. Actaully played well but got very unlucky on the last hand. I put ll my chips into the pot with best hand but got outdrawn.
The hand was my 10-10 vs 7-7 vs 6-6. and wouldn't you know it, a 7 hit on the last card. If I won that hand I would have been about 8th in chips with 50 left. Won't be my last time to play in a big tourney, but it will be the last time with those results!!

Dudes, did you fellas give up on fishin and go strictly to gambling? You all know that fishing is a sure thing (yea, right :what-big: !). Brad, don't know if you're loafing after the hard semester or still working. Scott(son) and I are thinking about going out Friday cause I have to burn another couple of vacation days. He'd rather have someone else there also, cause he hates getting bitched at constantly by his old man. I suppose you're working, huh Conan. Anyway, keep in touch and let me know if/when you can go.

Denny,
You can call me Mr.1st place :) It was a rebuy tourney with rebuys available for the 1st 2 hours. I only had my original buy-in ( total cost $10 ). And I took 1st place which paid $120 :) I was nice enough to "LET" Brad get 3rd. I couldn't let him take 2nd cuz then he'd get too cocky and I'd have to throw him over board on our next fishing trip !!!
And again, I want to thank Brad's wife for watching the kids to allow Brad's friends a new "IDOL" :)

Scott and I went out yesterday from about 11:30 til 4pm in Baton Rouge. Water was beautiful, sky was beautiful, the air was clear, it was a perfect 65 degrees out but the fishing really sucked! In all that time caught 2 tiny cats, neither of which I even knew they were on the line. No hard bites and very few little ones. Went all over around the elevator since they weren't loading and had no luck and really didn't see many on the fishfinder. I called Eddie and he thought we could get in at Darrow. We was working nights and goes to days on Wednesday. I would like to go Friday if the weather holds up. Brad, are you or Conan interested. It'll be my last trip of the year and darn, I hate to end on the earlier sour note. Hope you both had a great Xmas. Ours was nice.

We went out yesterday to a "new" spot about 12 up river from the baton rouge landing. They weren't biting well but the fish finder showed them down there. Ole Brad sure showed me up. He caught a nice 3 lb blue and all Scott or I caught were little throwbacks. It was a nice day, warm weather, great water conditions, nice boat ride, no problems. Overall, pretty hard to complain. Here is a pic of Brad's fish and one of my typical year end bigguns. You all have great ending to 2005 and a terrific 2006!

Conan, Brad pretty much smoked us in overall fish weight. I really wish we could have found some live bait like the fella we met the previous day had. He claimed to have some bigguns. We sure heard the fishfinder go off a lot. I think they were down there but not hungry. I guessed by your post earlier in the week that you are off next weekend. Right. Maybe we could go back and snatch some if the weather looks good. According to Eddie, the approach is still pretty much blocked to the site down south.

Mullyden looks like you can catch the same size fish my wife can. LOL
But you know its hard to catch that size fish in a big hook. I would say its a lot harder then catching a 3 lb fish on the same hook
Hope you get to catch that fish again in a few years and he is big enough to bend the pole good.

01-02-2006, 06:54 PM
Shiloh, you for darned sure pegged me right. I wouldn't know what to do if I caught one of any size lately. Actually I'm getting old and I think I forgot what it was like. But, there's still a little spirit there and by golly, "you have to be present to win". I'm gonna go back and try again, hopefully with Conan this weekend. I just hope I don't forget how to get back to the ramp though. Anyway, how's the fishing up your way at this time of year? Pickwick Dam is where?. For some reason (obviously lack of moisture in midwest) the river has been very low this year and the fishing on the Mississippi has been spotty at best. Last year and the year before I wouldn't have traded our fishery for any, but that's not quite the case now. I hope the spring brings a little more water and get's em hungry.

Brad, I doubt if you're the cause of our lack of success, however if they are biting I might be more convinced :what-big:
Actually, you can pay me later for taking Conan out fishing and away from your poker game!!!

Well, folks, not much to talk about on our first trip to the river on Saturday 1/7. We caught 4 little ones and went up north. It is really interesting to look at 2004-2005 data and the start of 2006.
2005 - first trip water level 1/9/05- 27.7 ft
2006 - 5.7 ft.
In 2005, water not above 7 feet for any trip since early August.
In 2004, water was never below 7 ft.
Best 2005 trip - April 9 - 62 fish at 24.3 ft.
Best 2004 trip - May 29 - 41 at 19.1
Total trips / brought home
2004 26 / 441
2005 17 / 315
2005 largest fish 10 lb 2 oz, first trip!
Looks like mother nature needs to help us out a bit. Need to get some spring thaw and then maybe the bite will be on. We've also started taking water temp. On Sat it was 41 degrees.
Ya all take care.

Looks like we slacked off on the trips in '05 Denny. I say we not let that happen in 2006!!!
I am going to do alot of reading the next few days and see if I can pick up anything that might make us more successful. Shouldn't be hard with our recent outings!! Still had a blast even though the fishing was very slow to nonexistant!!

I did a little more number crunching on our Mississippi River 2004-2005 fishing trips. I don't know how good the correlation is, but it kinda makes sense based on real history. The curve is a statistical trendline of which I am not smart enough to explain, but I would guess it's not too bad of a predicter of success.

Looks like we need to make special arrangements and get out every chance we get if the water level ever reaches the magical 22-25ft mark. Is that what you are reading into the graph as well Denny??

That's what I see, if the correlation is correct. Obviously there is a lot of scatter in the data, and I'm sure there are relationships with temp, and other things like "no fish" Brad, but really, when the water get's back to at least the teens, our odds should be improved. I know we fished all through 2003, didn't track any data but I'm sure the temps got cold, but the level never dropped down. Those little boogers won't have a chance when we get back on em!!!!!!

Things might be looking up a bit. Mississippi is steady now at 11 ft. This is
+5ft from 2 weeks ago. The bite might be coming!!!:p

What's up Denny, Conan, Brad and the rest of the BR crew?...Looks like from what Sgt. Rob is saying that Chicot III is postponed because of Evacuee's still in the Cabins.
I am going to get my money for the reservations back monday before the deadline is passed and I can't get a refund.
I know all of you have been missing me like a toothache so I thought I would pop in and see what was happening.
Talk to ya soon.

The only people who change their names are people who are hiding from the law or an ex ole lady looking for child support and I know there is no way in hell you would ever find two women crazy enough to marry you and you are still with Maria so you must be hiding from the law. Now see what you have gone an done. You made me write a really long sentence.
So how have you been my friend? I truly have missed you two knuckle heads and hope to get out with ya'll when the river gets back right.
Stay in touch...

Conan,
Aren't you just quite the river gambler. Congrats. I hope you'll still talk to us after you get famous on the travel channel winning all those big bucks.
The River is getting right. It is projected to be in the 20's level next weekend. I hope that's your week off so we can get em. This weekend will have a good level but the weather is supposed to suck and I suppose you're working. Catdaddy, we always have a spot for you too! Please let me know if things look good for either/both of you.
