I never hear much on here about the ohio river its a great fishery. I fish it all the time, caught some monsters out of there, I think the next state record will be out of there, I have caught many close but no record, question is, am I the only one fishing this great river, if not tell me the secret hot spot where the 70 lber. is lurking.

ive fished it once this year but the river was too high. last year i caught some nice saugers and channel cats up there... in the paper someone caught a 27lb flathead last year and 2 years before that there was a 31lb channel caught on a bass jig:crazy:, theres a really deep pool right under the fallston bridge(the black one closest to the dam) on the new brighton side...just cross the tracks where the opening is and it will lead you right too it...

I have fished the Ohio a few times, I would say try emsworth. Justin do you fish the dam there I have fished that where the creek comes into the water. This spot must get fished alot. The two times I was there I never saw so may empty cans of cannabait worms:angry:. But it made good kinlin for fire. We never caught no big fish there but a few flatheads. Good fishing up the back channel of Neville Island know of some really big fish out of that area.

Alot of people fish there. Its where the little sewickley goes into the Ohio. But warning about the Dam, they don't let you get close to it. the will send someone to kick you out.

i fish below dashields once in a while. You can get below the dam on either side. To get to it from the rte65 side, you go into the industrial park & go to your left, stay to your left until theres nothing left but trees. You,ll be able to see where theres a path going down the hillside. The path ends down at a nice deep hole.To get there from the other side you have to go over the sewickley bridge-go rt at end of bridge-follow 51 to the rt when it splits into a Y(first light). You,ll come to an intersection where theres a garden center on your rt-turn rt here-keep following until you come to a volunteer fire dept on your left hand side.Turn right after you pass that. There are signs for some small park thats back there. The road that leads back there says govt prop dont enter, but I,ve been back there a lot of times and no one from the locks ever bothers you.Theres usually always at least a 1/2 dozen guys fishing there-theres a lot of room. Most of them fishing there are after walleye or smallies.

Me an jason got a 400 gallon bait tank we can fit a few bullheads in there, I hope. Along with some blue gill, crappie, rainbows. I think I am rambling on tell my secret baits, now ryan will start catching some 40 lbers. I hope so. Good luck guys an let us know how ur doing, by the way new brighton dam is a good place to catch flatheads even in the day time, jason an me caught lots, helped us win a couple local tournaments.

well i finally got in to some flat's last night, i went out in my kayak by emsworth dam around 7:30 and was able to get 6 in 2 hours. the biggest one was only around 10, but it was good to catch some.i then went over to hpd to meet a buddy and was there till about 2 A.M. and out of the three of us no fish and only a couple of bites. i still think the big A is still to cold but the eye's were everywhere wish i had some jigheads with me...i just got back from dashields with no luck not even a bite was useing live gills and cut drum. i can't believe there not in that deep hole close to shore, i always thought they stayed deep in the day and shallow at night or is it differant in pre-spwan? well tight lines looks like pre-spwan is just starting!!!.....justin:cool2:

Hey guys this is my first post looking to get out next week one night behind the ice arena bank fishing. Caught 2 fish estimated in the mid 30# range last year there. Also has anyone tried live trout or drum for bait? Last year I was using 6to 10 inch suckers and I figure a12 or 14 inch bait would give me a shot at a fish in the 40+ # range. any help would be great.

Welcome to the boards ! i havent got to use any live trout.. hard to keep em kickin.. the suckers should work good , and i dont think size of bait = size of fish alot :tounge_out: ive cought 10lbers on a 10inch dead trout and have cought 40lbers on gill.. all depends on what the fish want at the moment

Welcome to the club Mike! I agree with Shawn-as long as your using bait over 6-8 inches, you just gotta hope the right fish is around.I,ve experimented with some large baits-1 to 3 # fish.I got some nice runs on them but never hooked up with the biggest baits.I felt like they were just grabbing the big ones and running with em.I,ll still throw one out once in a while, but I think by staying in the 5 to 12 inch range I,ll hook up with more fish & better my chances for the big ONE.

me and a buddy went down to the dam last night only i only got a 3-4 pound dink, and he didn't get a bite. so we went farther downriver from the dam and he got a 5 lber and i got a 4 lber,6lber,and a 11ber, i also lost one that had some ass on him felt like maybe the 17lber i need for the fish off..lol. but the one thing that i was suprassed with was that it was the first time this year the flats were hitting dead and live bait. we were using gills and suckers both dead and alive. don't know about everyone saying the spawn is here, but the big o is still going strong. by the way i got two of the three and the one i lost all in about an hour. tight lines bro don't start bass fishing yet, they aren't done....justin p.s. welcome seth glade to see another big o guy here!

looks like no one is doing any fishing on the big o! well mike and i went out on his boat my way on mon night and had a crazy night to say the least. it started out normal with a hit here and there and i think i got the first flat( just a little guy that un hooked himself at the boat) then mike got a nice channel(8lb) and so on. so after about 2 1/2 hrs at one spot we decieded to move up river to a diff hole and thats when thing's got crazy. we were there for only 5 min's and i got one, then 5-10 mins later mike got a good run and hooked up, then my other rod go's off and i'm hooked up. then as we are reeling in our double mike's other rod goes scream and now he has two rods hooked up. so i reel mine in fast( just a dink) and grab mikes rod in the holder( meanwhile mike is still fighting his first fish) so as soon as i grab the rod i know it was big started pulling drag and some good headshake's, and thats when it happened he got me in a snag and for what seem like an hour i tryed to get him free but couldn't. and after about 15 min's the line broke. so buy know mike landed the first fish(15 lb) and then his other rod went off, so by now within about 30-40 mins we had 5 out of our six rods going off with three at the same time. so mike gets this guy in and once again it's another 15 lber. he got two 15 lber in about 15 min's..just crazy. so the grand total for the night was 10 fish, i had 3 and mike had 7 he diff out fish me that night. now mike has all the wieghts and i have the pics so i will post the pics and i'm sure mike will write a post here as well.
and last night matt (vinestbrew) and i went down to the same spot from sure and had a pretty good night as well. i landed a 19 lb flat and a dink,he got a 15 lb flat and a 8 lb channel. so take a wild guess to where i'm going tonight...lol. tight lines guy's, get your ass's out on the water....justin

went out last night to glenfield and had a pretty crazy 30 mins, like mike and i did just 2 weeks ago. it seems like between 12:00 and 2:00 is diff the best time to fish this hole. so i got there around 11:30 and by the time i got a fire going wasn't till about 12:00 or so till i had my rods in the water. almost 12:30 on the dot my big rod goes off and i land a nice 7lber,(looked like he got his ass handed to him) then 10 min's later my king kat rod starts screaming and was doubleed over. so i hit him and thought i was snagged cause it was just dead weight then i felt two hard head shakes and my drag started to scream ago, so i know it was on then. now i only have 20 lb mono on this rig and the king katt rods are like utra light's for flats. so 5 min's in to the battle, my big rod start's scream so i put the king katt back in to the rod holder and hit my big rod. as soon as i hit it my line just snapped (40 lb power pro) so i throw it down and go back to the king katt rod( which looked like it was going to brake in the rod holder and he spooled 40yrds or so off) luckly he didn't get snaged and after a about 5 more mins so landed a very nice 35.5 in 23 lb buet! this is the exact same size i landed last thursday at hpd 35.5 in and 23 lb. i think i'm going to keep fishing thursday night's..lol. then after all the crazyness i stayed till the fire went out which was around 2:00 or so, and only had some nibbles. but was wierd when i reeled in both my lines both bait's were gone.
i can't understand why more people don't fish the big O , or maybe the do and just don't post. but to me the hole in glenfield is one of the best place's to fish from SHORE. now there's been night's were i get skunked and not even a bite. but there's also night's that last for an hour or two that are like last night. i guess i shouldn't bitch cause i always, always have that whole place to myself. which is about 50 yrds of shore, but i'm not one of those assholes that will cry about guy's fishing "my spot" or not saying where they are bitting. any who, if you ever see a red f-150 with a tool box on it and fishing stickers on the back window. come say what's up and will bs and hopefull catch some of these great fish we love. tight lines...justin:cool2:

haven't been able to get out yet. started therapy and it sucks but i'm getting better slowly. hopefully pretty soon i can get out and get some fishing in. you can't beat a good hole that has big fish potential that you can drive your truck to and no fishing pressure. thats like finding gold brother.

Justin K, excellent report, and fish dude. If I wasn't so far away, I would gladly back up the old Suburban next to ya, open the barn doors, pass ya a cold one, and set some lines up. Sounds like a great way to fish bro. Keep up the good work.
