I' got some buddies that fish it near the genoa dam, never been there to fish though. I've always wanted to go but everytime I make plans to head up there its always bad weather or they dog out. Hopin to make my rounds and get up there this summer but summer always seems so short.

I'd like to try te genoa dam this year as well but I gotta figure out directions. maybe I"ll run in to out there sum day or maybe we could set up a trip of our own.

I've always had good luck every time I've went up there. I go at least once a year. About 10 years ago I caught 3 master angler drum by Columbus. Usually I fish set lines either where the canal starts or where the canal dumps back into the river. Once again all I ever use on a river to catch cats is set lines and 6 inch goldfish. That way I keep all the little ones from messing with my stuff. Of course I can set my set lines in the middle of the river and not worry about them going anywhere unless something over 15 pounds eats the bait. Kind of fun trying to find my lines when a fish is on and it's bent clear over back into the water. If anyone wants to see these let me know and I'll send a picture and tell you how to make em. I grew up making these and none of them cost me more than 5 bucks and I'll put them next to anybody's for performance.

He fishes the Tri-County Canal by Cozad. He has excellant success every year running set lines for Flatheads. He also uses bluegills and sometimes goldfish too! I think the trick for effectively catching flatheads, is to have the bait set at the right depth. This can vary on the water conditions. Just trail and error. Good luck with your fishing!!

Bluegills are legal to use in NE unless you use them in the same water you caught them in. So be careful and hide that bait bucket in case Mr Green Jeans shows up to check you gear. It's a big fine to get caught with them. I think goldfish work just as good and the bigger the better. Just wish someone out here would sell them.

how i read it is you have to use it in the same body of water you caught it legally... or have a receipt for the purchase of it...

Sport fish can be used for
bait: (1) if they have been legally
acquired from a licensed aquaculturist
or a nonresident fish dealer. The angler
must keep a legible receipt or invoice
from the dealer listing the date, seller’s
name and address; and number and
size of each species sold, or (2) if they
are captured using hook and line and
used at the body of water from which
they were captured. In the latter case,
the angler will be required to follow both
the length and bag limits that are
enforced on that body of water.

with that said i know of a dealer just down the road from me that sells chubs bluegill minnows sallies goldfish and i think i seen some crawdads in there too all live...

legally you can catch them and use them in the same body of water... or you can buy them and transport them to fish with if you have a receipt.. either way thats the legal way.. but if you have a few in a bucket whos to say you didnt catch them earlier where your fishing and planned to use them as bait? if you use them as cut bait really it dont matter where you use them.. they want to make sure your not intoducing fish or infection into a body of water from another body of water.. you do what ya want.. but first things first.. go get a 2009 fishing hand book it will answer alot of the legality questions and if you have doubt call the NGP to clear it up.

What skewaz says is right except I think you have to purchase them from a licensed aquaculrist too. Or a bait shop will work too. But I catch my bluegills from a farm pond and put them in my live well at the house. And then kill them about 2 hours before I leave. And then I've also left them out for a day or so. I don't know which style is better than the other. All I know is that I love live bait because they've always produced the biggest fish. But I really don't want to get caught transporting live bluegills to a fish tourney that doesn't even have them in the lake I'm fishing. And now I know where to buy bluegills thanks to skewaz. So now I don't have to worry about since my fishing partner drives out from Lincoln. Which is great because the flats just love them.

My grandpa has used them and would cut off the pointy fins on the top and sides, he said it was a now a fish sandwich instead of a sandbur......

Use the heads. I'd catch bluegills and just let them die than they are legal to use as long as they are of legal size. Hope this helps.

I live about a mile north of the siphon between genoa and monroe and the canal is about all i fish.

Haven't tried my luck this year yet, but last year the only thing that really seemed to work was dip bait near the monroe power house. I know a few people who hunt flatheads and one of their favorite baits seems to be a frog wrapped in some chicken liver, and it seems to work as between them they seem to haul in atleast one 40+lb flathead a year and of course lots of other smaller fish.

was woundering if anybody was going to chum anywhere around the canal and what you use for chum?

skawez
04-16-2009, 10:18 AM
ive never fished the canal let alone know where it is.. although i found a good chum is cheap and easy.. get a 5 gal bucket go to the local elevator and at the pit youll find alot of corn and milo just fill your bucket to the brim take it home and fill with water not much just enough to fill in the "cracks" put the lid on set outside a couple days.. now you can either take a cordless drill with you to the lake and drill holes in it and sink it where you want to fish or you can just pop it open and dump it in.

theres alot of variations of this.. you can use blood from a butcher or whatever else you get from him.. dog/ cat food work also... im just partial to corn and milo cuz its easy to find and attracts more then what your lookin to catch as well.

just a thought
