I started out with my dad's 12 gauge shotgun. It is a Western Field...a knock off of a Mossberg 500. It's piled up allot of deer for my dad and I over the years. I have also hunted deer with a handgun in .357 magnum and .44 magnum. Now that my dad is in his mid 70's and we do allot of sitting I use a Thompson Center Encore 50 cal muzzleloader. I like it the best of all for 2 reasons. Number one....No safety. That always keeps me thinking. I feel that a safety gives me a false sense of security. If I want to shoot it, I have to cock it. Number two...I have one shot and I'd better make it count.

I have a Remington 700 ADL, 30.06, and a Rem 7600 .308, also I got a Rem 740 Woodmaster, 30.06. I've hunted with my Rem 870, 12 ga too but I missed once so I quit using it. I've killed ducks and rabbits with it plenty.

I use a 270 rem.bdl, I shot a lot of deer, elk with it, I know a gent that uses an243. and he always fills his tags. he says to use a gun that you are comfortable with and it depends on what you are hunting in whether its open, brushy, and so on but he says the most important thing is to make a kill shot the first shot, and shoot your gun alot to know how it shoots, drops ,ect. practice ,practice, practice

It is somewhat funny that after reading all the posts in this thread, I did not see (or at least recognise) one person using an assualt rifle. For all the hull-a-balu about them, you'd figure someone would use one.... oh, are you sure they are not legal to hunt with? LOL

My uncle used to have a 12 ga bolt action shotgun. Used it for pheasants.
I had an AR-15, but I traded it on another gun I wanted a long time ago. Couldn't hunt deer with that caliber at the time, now its legal. Rather have the new style sights anyway. I didn't have much opportunity to use it so I didn't figure I needed it at the time. Not a bad caliber tho.

We arent allowed to use centerfire rifles. Last 6 years Ive used a Winchester 1300 12GA rifled barrel synthetic stock with a red dot scope shooting Brenneke KO slugs. Muzzleloader season I switched from iron sighted .50 in lines with 385 buffalo bullets back to my traditional stuff. Now I have a .50 pennsylvania/kentucky poor boy percussion. My wife bought it for me in '07 for Christmas. It shoots better then I can. Custom made for roughly $600 and worth every cent. Patched round ball with a 50gr load of 777. Shoots 1" groups at 50yards off hand for me and I aint the greatest shot. I cant shoot it as good as it is. Buddy shot it off a bench and it was cutting the same hole for him at 50 yards. Use to rifle hunt in another state and its hard to beat a 30-06 in any action. By the way with the Winchest 1300 I had killed 26 straight deer I shot at with it. Just this past '08 season missed a doe opening morning and broke that streak. Killed a big 8pt 30 minutes later and 3 more antlerless deer that weekend. Guess I got doe/buckfever? Since '03 Ive taken 40+ deer with that combo. 11 in '05. I'd recommend that set up to anybody

HeHa,,, assault rifle,,,,
In 1776,, an assault rifle was a flintlock muzzle stuffer,, in 1917, it was a bolt action .30-06,,,,,
In 1944, it was possibly a semi-auto 8 shot clip fed semi auto Garand..in 30-06,, Korea, saw the M-14.. in .308.
later the M-16 ,,, Service Rifle ,, they're all service rifles..
Simply technology,,,, Politicians and Emotionalists came up with the Assault rifle...

Remington 700 BDL Custom Deluxe in 7mm Rem Mag., a Marlin 336C in 30-30 Win., a Winchester Model 70 22-250 that the action has been glass bedded on and had some trigger work done, Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull with a 8 3/8" barell, and a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag 12ga when going on a drive. The 7mm has by far killed the most.

Years ago I used the12ga. 3" Brenneke magnum slugs. Man what a whallop! Bout 7 or 8 shots is all I could handle practicing but if ya hit what you were aiming at WOW. Never had a deer get out of sight while shooting these.

I did use a remington 12ga in a 2 3/4, pump with slug barell. I now use a thompson center Omega 50 cal inline in stainless and composite stock. I have it rigged with the Omega scope, BDC reticle. I have killed numerous deer and now a coyote with this gun. It packs a wallop and I can get a lot more distance from it than the shotgun. I wont hunt with any other gun now. I love this gun, its awesome.
