I've never even heard of doing this before I came to this board. Whats the deal with hunting morels anyways? Where are good spots to find them? And how do you tell if they are morels or not? I don't want to go and pick up any hallucinogenic mushrooms thinking they are morels lol.

A little early here in central Ohio yet. When you do go out and get some, remember O'le Uncle Scifi and pick one for him - it was one of his favorite pastimes. Maybe he will lead you to some more! :)

Thats a darn fine mess, Flathunter!
Thats one thing I am going to be sure and do at Salt fork during slack fishing hours at the gathering. Some real nice looking spots on the back side of the lake! I got there to late last year for them, but that weekend should be prime time.;)

Little early yet for Morels, but I bet this warm weather has the Oyster mushrooms starting to go. If we don't get some serious rain we may not have a morel season:sad:

I wasn't looking for them or anything, but saw one growing on the side of the trail. It was actually the first one I've ever seen outside of a book :)

I agree with micus, we start looking around the 15th of Apr. ( Have a book with locations and how many for last 10 yrs or so find them same spot every year within one or two days)

Very nice mess indeed Flathunter. A little early here in Iowa just yet. We have always found cause for celebration each year, (cookout & brew), when they do come out.

Nothing here in Quincy IL. We hope to get some soon..There's plenty of minnows here in the creeks though.
You folks need to keep this mushroom hunting thing quiet or next thing you know MELLON will be adding to or telling us all about his mushroom hunting arsenal. You just can't go out looking for Morels without a special rig.No sir I wouldn't be out there without at least a 458 Casull in a quick draw shoulder holster of some sort.Never know when them foreigners like Shitakes will invading our woods.;) :p  :)
PS;I hope he knows I'm joking because those 458 Casull holes take a long time to heal particularly at my age.

so do you guys think that theyll just pop up late
center12

Actually I don't think they'll be late, maybe fewer but not later. It seems everything in nature has a "schedule" and the shrooms will try their damndest(?) to follow the plan. I've found Morels when it was God aweful dry and I've found then when I've had to wear a coat because it was cold. we've got about 3 weeks till the "great harvest", lots of time for mother to make it right:)

I love 'em,but never been mushroom hunting so I dont know how/where to look. For some reason,it seems to me that all mushroom hunters have amnesia.Whenever I asked them where they found 'em,they ALWAYS forget where. Why is that?

lol.morels are like gold that only pops up out of the ground once a year for maybe 2 or 3 weeks.you can compare the rush of finding a new mess of morels to maybe hooking into the biggest catfish of your life or maybe hitting a jackpot at the casino or somethin.people who hunt them dream about them all year round and cant wait till april and may to get their mushroom fix for the next year.if you found a money tree, would you tell others where to find it?yes they are that good!:)

I have a spot where I always go to pick Grays. They almost always come up first. With the rain and warm weather I thought I'd better go out and check it today just in case. I found three very small ones and left them alone to see what they look like tomorrow. I'll report back then with a pic.

my brother in law found some south of Lawrence day before yesterday. He's always on the shrooms!! He says that when the redbud blooms are the size of a mouses ear that the mushrooms will be up. With all this rain we've been gettin' the shroomin' should be great this year. I'm headed out tommorow a.m. - goin' around the saint marrys area along the Kansas river bottoms. Good luck with the shrooms - also for anyone that doesn't know turkey season starts wed. so where some orange and make some noise when ya go through the woods cause some hunters are idiots!!!!! good luck and be safe!!!!!!:)
We use to go shroom hunting in the 70's! Man those things will mess you up. LOL

Oh just seen your post Catdaddy, talking smack when I ain't around(you'll pay, literally)..................I've got some of your cash in my pockets already............loser(yeah right):p
Sounds like a woods walk is in order. Got a couple places on the river that I'd like to have a look see at. Sometimes fishing trips are just mushroom scouting in disguise:)
