Here's the deal. I figured I better start me little nook in here. I got the HIN number for my boat today, which means it should be delivered in about 2 weeks, which means that in about 2 weeks, I will start writing my own legend right here. In other words there's gonna be some tabby cats getting slammed down here :p (hopefully) Gonna take my idle time between now and then and update my tackle, buy a couple of new rods/reels, clean the ones I got, etc. I can't wait.

Thanks! They called and said my motor and trailer are in, but I guess it'll be a few more days on the boat. I was hoping to have it by the weekend. Bought 3 Penn 209's last week, and the rest of my tackle is good to go. The weather's warming up a pretty good bit apart from the last couple of days. Water on the river looks good. Seems to have cleaned itself out a lot since the storm. I'm ready to fish. I've went over the structure and lay of the river so much in my mind, I've probably willed a big tabby into one of my favorite holes. If things go good, it'll be a long summer.

Ronnie, have any luck up that way?

Finally got my boat. I picked it up Saturday but was busy the rest of the day, and I had to work today. But, I wasn't going to let the weekend pass with out letting the motor drink, so I went about 6:30 this evening and ran til dark. Here's a few pics of it with me and my daughter. She didn't want to get out of it.

Hey there old jhulsey
Why don't you fill some of the info in your profile a little so everbody can see who you are, where you live, etc. If you do someone might just take you fishing some day. Hah. Nobody wants to end up with some kind of terrorist in the boat with them unless they are prepared.

jhulsey
04-05-2006, 08:56 PM
Terrorist? What would make someone think something like that. Must be his new coworkers.:) Just for you Roger, I will fill some stuff in.....if i can figure out where it is......beanie weinees?

rwilley3
04-05-2006, 09:51 PM
Much better. Are you saying that someone at our work reminds you of a terrorist? We need to try and up that personal best fish pretty soon as well. Maybe next time I won't make you run the anchor though since last time shortly after our trip you ended up in the hospital.
Roger

04-06-2006, 09:09 PM
uh......hatchfiled or field or whatever? Hey, I'm always game for some fishing with somebody that knows what they are doing, and I assure you the anchor will be no problem......a couple weekends ago the wife had me slaving.....8 yards of mulch and 150 retaining wall blocks that weighed 80lbs apiece:crying: ......I'll be O.k.

Went yesterday after work to the mouth of the Jordan River close to Bay St. Louis. Little jon boat did pretty good in that choppy water. Had a gps with us yesterday and the boat held steady at 34 mph with 2 of us a full ice chest and all of our gear. Had a good time but only caught a few speckled trout too small to keep. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be ready to chase some tabby's. Gonna try to catch bait today.

Well today I spent most of the day fartin around the house, but I did put another addition on the boat. Finally got my stuff together this afternoon and took the wife and daughter with me for a late afternoon river run. First time for them in the boat. Thank goodnes they really liked it. Makes it easier to pay for. Anyway I hadn't had time to catch bait, so I grabbed up my trusty red worms and headed down river to a little spot where the channel splits around an island. Anchored off about 30 yards up from the point and cast down both sides and let one hang in the middle. Stayed about ten minutes and caught pounder channel. Wind got so bad it was pulling the anchor up so I was going to move and the wind only got worse. So we just headed in. It was getting late anyway and we really rode to far to get a lot of fishing in. Didn't feel comfortable with my little girl in there and the water being so rough. On the bright side, I fished ten minutes and put the first catfish in the boat. Gonna try to hit it early in the morning til maybe around lunch and see what happens. Here's a few pics of the additions I put on the boat so far.

Went this morning. Didn't catch nuthin but a little ol fiddler cat on a great big hook. The water was really nice this morning, although it cold. Had to bundle up good. Wish I would have been able to stay longer. Looks like it's gonna be a nice day.

Solomon, Congrats. on the new boat. Sounds like you also fish for specks. I am from Brandon and usually make several trips to La. Marsh a year for specks and redfish. Never tried our coast. Is it worth trying ? I never tried it as I only have a 18 ft. flat and thought I would have to get in open water. If the fishing is pretty good I would like to try our coast. Where would be the best place to launch to avoid open water?

solomon
04-10-2006, 11:21 AM
I really don't fish for them a lot, but it's easy to run down after work and try em. The ramps only about 5 minutes from my office. Though the fishing is better out front, as far as I know it's decent in the backwater when the tides up. The best place I could tell you to go would be on Hwy 603 south of Kiln, put in at the Bayou Lacroix bridge. It's about a 5 minute run to the mouth of the Jordan River, which empty's into the Bay of St. Louis. A lot of people fish the area and catch fish. You're well protected in there, as long as you stay out of the bay when it's real windy. In my 16' we anchored off in a cut and were comfortable, even with the wind blowing pretty good. You should have no problem in there, and there's plenty of area to fish.

Fished Saturday night for a short time, with no luck. My spotlight went dead pretty quick and it was extremely foggy. River's dropped a lot and I hit a stump and broke about 2 inches off my skeg. Didn't want to run any further not being able to see so I fished a couple of holes close to the ramp and hung it up and went home. Probably won't be able to fish much for a while. Houses are popping up everywhere down here and we've got more work than we know what to do with, which wouldn't be so bad if we didn't all work a 40 hr week at our regular jobs.

Went and picked up my lines yesterday. After I got done, I set up and fished a while. Caught 7 between 2 and 7 lbs. Then the bite shut off and it started drizzling rain, so I packed it in. Have had 0 luck with the tabby's so far. I know they're biting, just havn't got on top of em yet. At daybreak yesterday, I was launching the boat and a feller idled in from up river with a tabby he caught on a trot line. Weighed in a 43 lbs. Got real excited seeing that. Guess all you can do it keep at it.

Congrats on the new boat, hope its everything you wanted & then some. I know when I bought my first boat about 2 yrs ago I was estactic & couldnt sleep till I finally got to take her out.
I am new to this board & was wondering where you'll fish at on the Res (not the exact spot just the area like the bluffs or causeway or up by Tommy's etc..)

I havent been on the Res long recently moved here from Mo to make more $$$, anyways would love some help trying to figure the Res out, not that you want to hear it but I did pretty good on the Crappie this yr & caught several small cats probably 2-3 1/2 pounds each.

Anyways if any of you'll experts want to help out a fellow fisherman I would love the help & even have boat we can use:big_smile: if you'll wanted to go out & wear the cats out sometime

Thanks cmac. Well the last couple of weeks havn't been kind at all. Only been in the water for a couple of hours here and there. No fish to speak of. Even struck out bream fishing with the daughter i a spot that usually yields huge gills at any given time. And now I'm sick. Won't be able to go this weekend cause it's time for the annual bluegill flyfishing tournament on the farm, so I'll be sweating it out with my dad in the lake here. The only possibility is Sunday but it ain't looking good. Anyway good luck to everyone fishing throughout the rest of the week.

Finally got back to the river today with the wife and daughter. Got there a little after lunch, and boy it was hot. Fished every kind of scenario I could think of. Structure on holes, structure in shallow, open shallow, open deep, fished the channel around the rocks, EVERYTHING. Not the first bite. But the sun was bright and the cold ones were cold so it was a good day anyway. Especially later, it got cooler and the water was extremely calm. Just wish I was tearin it up with a big tabby. Did have a fella pull up that had a 43 lb tabby in the boat with him, so they're there, they're just avoiding me as usual. Til next time.

Well we left the harbor about 6pm Saturday, and headed offshore. It was me and a buddy from work and one of his buddy's in their boat. We fished a few rigs on the way out and didn't get much action, except a black tip shark I hooked into. I jumped out of the water once and man it must have been 8 feet long. Felt like I had a freight train on there. Shortly after it broke me off. By that time it was dark and we were about 30 miles out, so we settled in for the ride. We stopped at 60 and 70 miles and fished a couple more rigs, catching 2 amberjack but nothing else. When we arrived at the last rig we planned on visiting, we were 80 miles out and we hooked up to the rig. Planing on sleeping in the boat, we were just tinkering around with some cut pogies and caught a few small red snapper, but no keepers. It was about 1:30am Sunday and we were fixing to nap for a while when I caught a real nice Mangrove Snapper. The other two guys came over to the same side of the boat and we started catching a few, then it calmed down a little. Really enjoyed watching the barracuda and the flying fish, which are real neat. The boat had a thru hull light mounted underneath, and with it on you could see about 30 feet deep. It was extremely calm and beautiful. As they said it was "pond slick". About 3am the Mangrove's turned on bigtime, and we loaded the boat between then and daylight, also finishing out our limit on aj's. At this point the crewboat showed up and we had to move. Sun was almost up now and we went to a spot they wanted to try that they had never been before. With early morning came wind and strong tide and we had a hard time staying on the bottom, so we decided to fish our way in and try to pick up some Red Snapper. Took our time as it was a pretty rough ride, but couldn't find any keepers. I did catch a Rock Hind Grouper, which was interesting. One of the guys commented that it was only the fifth or sixth one that he'd ever heard of anyone catching out there. Got back to the landing about 4pm and loaded up, so when I got home and went to bed last night, I'd seen 36 hours awake, and about 35 standing up. Needless to say I barely made it to the bed before I fell out. All in all it was one of the best offshore trips I have ever been on.

Well I set up on the first spot and was real excited about it. Had real good current on the higher inside and it dropped off about 6 feet to the outside of a bend and there was a good seam there. Right at the seam there's a huge stump sticking up about 2' out of the water. Set up on the outside of the hole, in the hole, on the drop, and right under the stump. Had two promising takedowns. One on the drop and one under the stump. Fishing with cut gill heads on 4/0 circles. Couldn't hook up on either one. First one dropped it before I could get the pole and the second I just plain missed. Moved a little to a deep hole at the top of good backcurrent. Broke off every rig I had. Headed on back in early, and it's a good thing cuz my truck wouldn't start. Ended up having to borrow a battery out of my boat and cut back the cable ends to some good wire. Finally got it going after a cussin match with the cables. Encouraging though to finally get a little promising action, that being the first of the year.

Overslept this morning. Got to the river about 11. Fished til about 4:30. HOT HOT HOT. I don't know the air temp but the stick on clock/thermometer on the side of the boat said 129F. No breeze. No current. The water's extremely low. Marked fish everywhere I went but couldn't buy a bite. Did manage to come home with a nice glow. I think I'll give it a rest til after a good rain.

Put out 100 hooks yesterday morning. Went back last night, nothing. Baited up. Went back at daylight, lot of bait gone, had one fat channel cat that was slam full of eggs. Caught her in about 7' of water around some logs. Water temp was 84 degrees this morning.

solomon
06-19-2006, 09:42 AM
Well we fished hard all weekend with not much to show for it. For the final hoorah Sunday morning we improved a lot, catching close to 50 lbs of channel cats. There were a few fish in there that got mauled. One didn't have any skin on the back 1/3 of his body. Pretty banged up. Maybe we can let it rest for a week and it'll get better.

sgt_rob
07-03-2006, 05:14 PM
Sounds like the flatheads are giving the channel cats a run for their money. My "pet" flathead hated having a channel cat in the tank and "chewed his ass" on a nightly basis until I pulled it out of the tank.

07-05-2006, 12:38 PM
I fished Monday night. I managed to get some sleep in between runs, nestled in to a spot in the sand by the river. It's a good thing to, as the night wasn't completely wasted. I managed 5 nice tabbies, a couple of big channels, 1 goo, 1 buffalo. The catfish were big enough that I got a couple of solid bags of filets, but nothing great. Again, the $/lb was high. It started off bad, as I was going to try to launch off the sandbar, and quickly figured out the boat was much to heavy to pull through the sand, so by the time I got to the landing it was dark, and I had to make the 7 mile run downriver with a rechargeable spotlight, which was of course dead halfway there, leaving me with an LED light to navigate with. Amazingly I only run up on one stump and only ran aground once. I wasn't going very fast so it was ok. The stump got my pinching though. Those were my first flatheads of the year, so that was nice. Going on vacation tomorrow, so the fishing is over for a couple weeks.

Got tired of waiting on the water to rise and did some wade fishing yesterday evening. Caught a mess of channels in pretty swift shallow water. Not a lot of size to em but they fried good whole at midnight. About half of them were full of eggs. Some nice battle scars too.

Took the boat out Friday, which turned out to be a disaster. Walked the boat about 100 yards up from the ramp to get out in deeper water, then hopped in a fired it up. Made it about 50 yards upriver and the motor died. River was moving pretty good so I had to drop anchor and get out to work on the motor in chest deep water. Water in the fuel line. Emptied the bowl but couldn't ever get it started again. Paddled back down to the ramp and loaded the boat, then buried the trailer in the mud trying to get out. Took about an hour of work to get the trailer up the hill.:angry:
