The Merced River "hot spot" is approximately 80 miles from my house on the west side of Fresno (12 miles from Kerman). The main entree is stink bait, dough balls, and worms/crawlers. There are HUGE cats and carp in this body of water. Crawdads have never been tried there, but they should be contemplated ASAP! :tounge_out:

Striped bass and large mouth bass get caught in this stretch of river.
We have connections to the private property owners who let us in for $5 a carload of southern gentlemen.

This "hot spot" is best during late spring to late summer.
I have caught a 25 pound carp out there and catfish to four pounds.
I have seen others off the bank walk by with 8 to 10 pound cats.
The current is generally perfect! One to three ounces of weight max.

Fullmoon... Anthony...Welcome to the BOC from the south in California...thanks for the info on the river.... thought a lot about it as I have looked at it as I was on the freeway heading north.... Have you fished where it comes into the San Joauqin?

I wouldn't mind fishing that spot. I always thought about that river as I crossed it on the 99 too:wink:

Hey Robb-

I'll try to set up February trip to Merced River with you and Sean. We should invite Capt. Steve, also. Peter and I can help coordinate trip.

When should we release are official nicknames for Sean, you, and I?
I think they are great tags!

Anthony

Go North on Hwy 99
Go West on Hwy 140
Go North on Hwy 165
As you enter the tiny town of Stevinson, take a left on 4th Ave.

Note: There is bait store or two on left hand side of Hwy 165 northbound. As I recall, one market is at intersection of 165 and 4th. If not, it's next street northbound.

As you head west on 4th St., this road winds to the right and turns into Cemetery Rd.
It is called Cemetery Road for very good reasons.
Take a left onto River Rd. Stay on River Road until you come to stop sign.
The road at this point forks north and south. Make a left turn and go south. You will see that River Rd. has a River Road continuation by taking a right turn. Do so! Make a right turn onto River Road!
If you keep your eyes focused on right side of road, you will pass one trailer park. Go past first park and continue west on River Road. You will see a second mobile home park with two entry ways. Take the second entrance and enter park by making a right.

The first mobile home facing the second entry way is where you pay $5 a carload to enter. It is an elderly couple. If there are problems, call my cell @ 313-4349. Once you are granted permission, you will drive east inside park, until you see a dirt road that goes northbound. You will enter this dirt road until you see gate, close gate behind you after you enter.
Drive all the way back until you see fence to the left with gated entry.
I used to see trashed boat near the gate. There is plenty of good parking right next to gate. Carefully, go through the barbed wire and take the dirt trail that heads westward. If you search, you will find at least two to three great spots to fish from the bank, place a tent, etc.

Tight lines, my friends. Tight lines.

Retrace your steps until you get back to Hwy 165.
Make a left turn. Go north on 165 until you hit Hwy99.
You'll be in Turlock.
Go southbound to go back to Fresno.

This is quicker, but less scenic!

Lunch sounds good. It may have to be next week sometime. I'll try and give you a call later on this evening before or after my son's wrestling practice. Robb is in the process of moving so he hasn't been posting much. Maybe we can get a trip set up at lunch.
