Fishing with a BOC member from his boat on the Kaw near Kaw point.
Set up: 209 Penn reel with 30 lb test line mounted on a 12 ft extra heavy ugly stick.
Used a 3 way swivel rig with 10 oz sinker and 8/0 Gamatsu circle hook. Bait was rigged behind the dorsal fin.
Threw about 10 ft from bank (Probably about 10 ft of water there) This fish did not take out my line (no clicker action). The rod
tip (which had a night stalker light on it) started bouncing
just a bit so I picked up my rod and engaged my reel and
that's when it started to run. Took a few minutes even with my outfit to get it in as it would surface by the boat and dive back down to the bottom several times.
It was released to catch another day.

I got up to the California Delta at about 7:30am, I put on my Looper Rig with some Dip-bait on it and casted it out while I got my other
fishing gear together (chair, Radio, food ect.) and then it
happened! The bell at the end of my fishing rod was sounding just like a recess bell in a school yard. I picked up the rod and the fight was on. 20
minutes later it was over and we were taking this Photo, then she was
released. |

Me and a buddy were camping/fishing all night and this was the best of the catch. The others were not big enough to photograph. I don't know what he weighed, and am not that good at guessing, but the only thing that I had for scale was my 23-1/2" Machete. He was just a grunt longer. I was pretty
surprised and pleased with the fight, because I caught him on my "light" weight
Inter-coastal Ugly-Stick backpacking rod, on 12lb. Spiderwire Fusion line, and red circle hook, (don't remember what name). Nice fight, and had a good time.

We were fishing in the canal with little
luck. This was our second evening in the canal. We were bringing in the other lines getting ready to make a
move. I seen a slight movement on the last fishing rod I had
out. I was reeling in one of my reels when I noticed it, so I had to lay it down and take the one with the fish on it out of the rod
holder. It was a slow take down, and when I eased back on the circle hook and the fish felt it ,the fight was
on. She took drag for a few seconds and then I buckled down on her a little
more. With the heavy current in the canal ,it was a good wrestling match for
awhile. I got her up to the boat and my partner netted her up and we weighted her and turned her back all in about 3
mintues. The power of these beast are awesome! |
